LL Cool J, Chris O'Donnell Find Common Ground

Bryan Bedder/Getty

NCIS: Los Angeles costars LL Cool J and Chris O’Donnell might be primetime’s newest odd couple, but behind the scenes the two actors have much in common.

“There just wasn’t space to wonder, ‘What’s Chris gonna think of my rap background? Is he gonna be square? Is he gonna get me?’” LL recalls in a new interview with PARADE, because their sameness was quickly apparent.

“Then I discovered he has five kids, and I have four. Here’s the strangest part. I found out that our two fourth-graders, our 9-year-olds, are at opposing schools, and their basketball teams compete.”

For Chris, the show couldn’t have happened at a better time. “I definitely had those moments, like any actor, when you get anxious and think, ‘When am I going to work again?’” he confesses. “But I would feel that way even when I had every offer in the world coming to me.”

Once he became a father five times over, however, the feeling was magnified.

“I felt a little more of the anxiety that came with the responsibility of being a parent. I was looking for something that would allow me to stay in Los Angeles, which was best for my kids.”

LL and wife Simone Johnson have four children: Najee, 20, Italia, 19, Samaria, 14, and Nina, 9. Chris — married since 1997 to Caroline Fentress — is dad to Lily Anne, 10, Christopher, 9, Charles, 6 ½, Finley, 3 ½, and Maeve, 2.

NCIS: Los Angeles airs Tuesday’s at 9 p.m. on CBS.

Mariska Hargitay on More Children: 'It's In God's Hands'

Courtesy More for use on CBB

Toys and photographs litter the hallway just beyond the entrance of the New York City residence shared by Mariska Hargitay and Peter Hermann, evidence of their 3 ½-year-old son August Miklos Friedrich.

He is almost exactly the same age as Mariska was when her mom — screen siren Jayne Mansfield — died in an automobile accident in 1967. A passenger in the backseat, Mariska escaped the crash relatively unharmed, save for a small laceration on her forehead.

“I love it when people say, ‘She had such a great laugh, and so do you,’” Mariska confesses. “When I find similarities, it gives me so much peace.” Motherhood, marriage and philanthropy have given a sense of purpose.

“Children, when they lose their mother, have a different antenna,” Mariska notes. “[They wonder] ‘When will I be safe? When will I be home?’ I lost my home too early.” She adds,

“I’m getting it back through Peter and August, and, strangely, through the foundation. It’s about following the signs, listening to your inner voice. I’m living my life, and I know that this is what I’m supposed to be doing.”

What’s more, at 46, Mariska says she hasn’t given up hope of making August a big brother. “It’s in God’s hands,” she says. “But we’re always open to it.”

Harrison Ford a 'Much Better' Parent Now

Kevin Winter/Getty

With a 33-year age difference between his oldest son Ben, 42, and his youngest son Liam, 9, Harrison Ford‘s experiences as a parent have clearly run the gamut.

“My first child was born when I was 25,” the actor notes in a recent interview with PARADE. “Babies raising babies is not a pretty sight. I am much better at it now.”

To that end, Harrison, 67, says his weekends are completely dictated by Liam and his mom, fiancé Calista Flockhart. “I do whatever [they] want to do,” he proclaims.

“We’ll take a couple of hours on Sunday morning to go motorcycle riding or go for a hike. I just made a birdhouse with my son.”

Joking that he “inherited” Liam when he fell in love with Calista, Harrison notes that the trio have been a family unit for quite some time. “I think Liam was about 6 or 8-months-old when I met him and Calista,” he points out. “We have been together ever since.”

When asked whether it is an “unexpected joy” to contemplate new fatherhood again after so much time, Harrison concurs.

“Yeah…I wasn’t expecting it at all. The unexpected part was certainly true. And the joy part is also true.”

In addition to Ben and Liam, Harrison is dad to Willard, 40, Malcolm, 22, and Georgia, 18, from two previous marriages. His new film Extraordinary Measures hits theaters Friday.
