It’s another son for Westlife singer Shane Filan and wife Gillian!

The couple — married since 2003 — welcomed Shane Peter Filian shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Friday, the Irish Independent reports.

Baby boy weighed in at 6 lbs., 9 oz., and joins older siblings Patrick Michael, 16 months, and Nicole Rose, 4 ½, at home.

The pregnancy was announced in July.

Congrats! It seems strange to me to name a second son after his father. Is that common?

congrats to them. it almost seems strange to me to name the 2nd son after the father rather than the 1st

In Ireland it is a common tradition to name the first son after the mother’s father, and the second son after the dad. Whether that is the case for this family I don’t know!

Congratulations (i say it all the time but two under two has to be a handful.) I love those beautiful Irish names.

Wow! Congrats :) shane’s father’s name (and also one of his older brother’s) is Peter. So we know where the middle name comes from. I don’t know if Gillian’s father is named Patrick, though.

I am from Ireland and my father, 2nd born son, is named after his father. His older brother is not named after anyone. I don’t know how common this is. Most people I know, if they’re named after their father, are first born sons!

I’m Irish and my father is the second son but named after his father. His eldest brother is named after their mother’s father. I hadn’t even thought that that was slightly odd until right now!

I’m Irish, my friend has two brothers. The younger one is named after his father. The older one after nobody. I know a couple of other examples of it too. It’s pretty common in Ireland I think.

I was confused about the naming on a second son after the father but i understand now thanks to everyones comments!

I always understood that the Irish naming tradition was 1st son is named after the father’s father, second son is named after the mother’s father, and third son is named after the father. At least, that’s what Wikipedia says, and it’s what happened in my family!

Maybe Shane and Gillian couldn’t think of another name they liked so just decided to name the baby after Shane? Who knows.

I’m always a bit disappointed when I hear that people have named their children after themselves. I know names are a matter of taste, but I do not understand this tradition.

Congrats to them! That being said, their daughter’s name makes me smile, because she happens to share her first name with Nicole Kidman, and her middle name with Nicole’s daughter Sunday (Sunday’s middle name is Rose). :)

Mom Said It

"I had to make a decision that I could sleep with every night. I did feel responsible for the young girls who I probably confused and let down. I apologize for that. But I wasn't trying to glamorize teen pregnancy."
