Julie Bowen: 'I Run to My Job'

You won’t hear Julie Bowen complaining about the struggle to balance work and family! In a highly tongue-in-cheek interview with US Weekly, the actress singled out “an excuse to get out of the house” as a “mommy must-have.”

Tops on that list? Her job on the smash hit Modern Family.

“My doctor told me, ‘Only give 70 percent. You’ll hate them if you give 100 percent of yourself.’ I took that advice to heart. I run to my job. I love my job.”

Julie, 40, says she’s also often on the hunt for “piles of cloth to wipe up the massive amounts of vomit and fluids that are constantly coming through my house.” Mom to Oliver McLanahan, 2 ½, and 8-month-old fraternal twins John and Gus, Julie suggests that things can get quite hectic indeed.

“It’s a nightmare,” she jokes. “It’s nothing but tiny little penises and poop all day long. And not in a good way.”

Perhaps sensing that her humor might not translate well, Julie then clarified,

“I always come across sounding like I hate my children. I actually love them very much.”

Although she appears to have shed the weight she gained with the twins, Julie was quick to point out that looks can be deceiving. “I’m not in shape,” she insists. Pinching her belly, she revealed “this is soft and doughy.” When pressed to reveal her secret, however, Julie conceded,

“I run a lot. That’s the short answer. I run and run and run.”

Oliver, John and Gus are Julie’s children with husband Scott Phillips. Modern Family airs Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on ABC.

I love her, and she’s one of the few to admit that it takes lots of cardio to become slim after birth.

I am the mom of three…a three year old and 11 month old twins..all girls, so I totally understand Julie!!!! LOL!

Jill on

I love her. She is too funny :)

Shaya on

I love her and Modern Family is one of the funniest shows I’ve seen.

pam on

I love her honesty. As the mother of all-boy triplets, I feel her pain with the tiny penises and the poop. Ha ha!

JMO on

haha she’s just being an honest mommy which who doesn’t love that!

Mrs. R. on

I used to think she was SUPER negative and kind of b*tchy… then I realized she’s just REALLY dry in her humor. She’s hilarious and quite endeared to me now!

Love her honesty! And I love the show even more!

LOVE Modern Family. If you haven’t seen it yet, you must! You’ll be hooked! It is the only non-reality show I watch now. Love it love it love it. And of course, now that she said she was pregnant on most of the shows and hiding her belly, I look out for it now and of course now I know, I can tell she’s pregnant in the show when we get the occasional belly shot, but it must have been early in the pregnancy because it wouldn’t be noticable unless you were like me and looking out for it. Anyway…Love her! Love the show! And I TOTALLY appreciate her honesty. It’s not always all cupcakes and kittens when raising kids. She tells the truth.

Modern Family is one of my absolute favorite new shows and she is terrific on it! I love her humor in this interview and how she doesn’t sugarcoat anything. She’s awesome!

JMO on

her sense of humor is very dry. She did a recent inteview with Chelsea Lately where she bashed Sofia Vergada her costar…people were fuming and calling her a hater and a racist etc. But apparently Sofia had made fun of her in another program and Julie has said they are quite fond of each other but love to pick each other a part. But if you watch the interview you may actually think she’s serious at some points….it was quite a humorous interview!

Becky, she was only pregnant when the pilot was filmed. The others were filmed after the twins were born. But you can totally see her 8 month preggo belly in the pilot. She hid behind a lot of flowers and desserts.

Love her sense of humour!

I am actually glad she said that she always sounds like she hates her children but she doesn’t. I never doubted that she loves them but every single interview I have ever seen with this woman she is complaining about everything regarding her kids with nary a happy word to be said. It drives me nuts. It’s nice that she acknowledges it, though..that she really does sound like an unhappy bitter woman in most of her interviews. She’s probably actually a really nice person and mom in real life.

Lauren on

Totally agree, Jennifer. I am all for being honest about how hard pregnancy and parenting are and not sugarcoating things, but Julie takes it too far imo. I think it’s her style; if she used more tactful language, she would get the same point across without sounding as those she hates her children, which truthfully she does. Felicity Huffman is another mother who does this; every single time motherhood comes up she goes on and on about how difficult her children are, and it gets really annoying to read. Reese Witherspoon is someone I’ve always thought does a good job of talking about how hard marriage and motherhood can be without sounding like she resents her children. When you veer into that territory like Julie and Felicity, it’s just uncomfortable to read imo.

Jennifer and Lauren — As a mom of a girl and boy-girl twins born almost exactly two years later, I know EXACTLY what Julie Bowen is saying. Trust me, she is in a difficult phase of parenthood!! The physical and emotional demands of having so many children close together is super-demanding and wearying. Give her another year or so, when some of the strains will have lessened. I’m sure she loves her children dearly and is a great mom.

Melissa on

I love this woman’s honesty! The 70%/100% statement is so true. I was giving 150%, well, I burned myself out. I realized that I had to take time out for myself and do the things I love. I have three beautiful sons and a lovely husband, but you have those days, moments where you wonder what happened to your life, body, etc…!Mom’s – we got to take care of ourselves first, then you can fully give of yourself to your family.

Mom Said It

"I had to make a decision that I could sleep with every night. I did feel responsible for the young girls who I probably confused and let down. I apologize for that. But I wasn't trying to glamorize teen pregnancy."
