Patricia Heaton Confesses Her Less Than Perfect Christmas Present

It was a Christmas present gone wrong for Patricia Heaton and one of her sons! Following a recent appearance on The View, the actress took time backstage for a mommy confession, revealing that she gifted her son, “who’s kind of a worrier and hypochondriac,” with the book 100 Things That Will Kill You.

Originally thinking the book was a great idea “because he worries about everything,” Patricia has instead been left to deal with the aftermath.

“I went to tuck him in one night after Christmas … and he had the book open on his lap and he was saying, ‘Mom, did you read about the Ebola virus?’” she explains. “And I realized, you know what, probably not a good idea to have gotten him that book.”

Now, with her son fearful of contracting the virus, Patricia jokes she is saving her money for more important things — like therapy!

“He is so afraid right now of flesh-eating bacteria that he is putting that sanitizer gel all over him. So I’m just going to apologize in advance and now I’m saving for his therapeutic bills.”

Patricia and her husband David Hunt are parents to Samuel David, 16, John Basil, 14, Joseph Charles, 12, and Daniel Patrick, 11.

Her new sitcom The Middle airs Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. on ABC.

I wouldn’t buy that book for myself much less a child!!

That’s not even funny. Poor guy if he really is hypochondric like that. It’s torturous!

- sirechilde on

That’s funny. One of my daughters is like that too. I could see her absolutely loving that book but then also being terrified.

- Reader on

Her sons have nice classy names.

- Tina on

Lol I was the same way as a child.

- Molly on

I was always like that as a child. Googling symptoms of anything is a bad idea for me.

- Natasha on

I must be losing my sense of humor because I don’t find this store cute – AT ALL.

- Annie on

You gotta hate a ‘good’ idea gone bad :(

- Dasche Bledsoe on

I cannot beleive that the baby she was pregnant with on “Raymond” is 11 already! Where does the time go? Great names for all of them too.

- meghan on

I don’t really find that amusing.

- Mo. on

I dont this funny at all. I like her as an actress. And I love her sons’ names.

- ll65 on

I guess she was trying to help him put his fears into perspective.

- meghan on

I dont see where she said which son, but if it was her 16yr old i wouldnt call him a child. Shes on CBB but her kids arent babies :)

- Summer on

That’s sad. Poor little hypochondriac. She had no way of knowing how badly that gift would backfire. Love her boys’ names!

- mrsh on

It may not be ‘funny’ Maybe she meant it as a cute tid-bit. Her youngest is 11. Some kids have sex at 11 now-a-days–do you really thing they dont know much at 11?
I think this is perfectly acceptable as a gift. Get over it, your children know more than you give them credit for.

I think it’s funny. It’s not as if she willingly decided to torture him and hurt him.She just wanted to help out with a bit of humour and it backfired. Why cry over the spilled milk if you can actually laugh at a mistake? Her son will be ok.

- eva on

I was like that as a child and I am still that way as an adult. I don’t see anything wrong with it. I call it having good hygiene. ;)

- Jane on

Laugh at a mistake? Well, sure… If it’s not serious that is. My aunt is a hypochondriac and she is convinced that she has heart failure and cancer. Her days are consumed with this fear. Nothing really seems to help and we can’t hardly laugh at her.

- Hea on

Hea- If anyone’s laughing about anything, it’s the mistake, not Patrica’s son!

- CelebBabyLover on

I think its funny…

I think its funny too. 11 year olds are pretty mature these days and arent as “precious” as some seem to think. I went through the same phase as him I’d even have found a book like that interesting! In fact I’d even find it interesting now :)

- Hannah on

I think people are waaay too uptight about things. She was trying to be funny..don’t take things so seriously by saying “thats not funny at all..blah blah..” LIGHTEN UP!
