Tim Allen Confesses His Future Diaper Dilemma

Fame

Not your average dad! During a humorous appearance on the Today show last week, Tim Allen admitted as much when prompted to discuss the obvious age gap between his daughters Katherine, 20, and Elizabeth, 9 months.

“I’m kind of a grandpa mixed with a dad,” the actor and comedian, 56, laughs. “I don’t get upset.”

And if Tim were ever to temporarily forget his decision to dive back into changing diapers at his age, the actor admits that his seven brothers have no qualms about providing him with a reminder or two!

“My brothers do this weird math with me all the time,” he shares. “‘Boy, when that girl is uh…’ I got it! I got it!”

In fact, confesses Tim, he often imagines what awaits the father-daughter duo down the road. “I think of when she’s 16. My dream is that she’ll be going, ‘Dad? DAD! Do you want me to roll you over by the window so you can watch me play?’” he jokes.

“She’ll be changing my diapers, you know, what goes around comes around. ‘I gotta go kids, I gotta change my dad’s diapers, he had a big meal.’”

Katherine is Tim’s daughter from a previous relationship while Elizabeth is his first child with wife Jane.

haha he is so funny! Huge age gap though. One just out of the house the other just born! I’m sure he gets the jokes like when she’s 20 you’ll be 76! haha but hey children=happiness and it’s never too late to be a daddy again! I love the comment about the diapers. He probably is changing her very well prepping for him later on! Too funny!

I love Tim Allen! I miss Home Improvement.

My family is the same way (HUGE age gaps). I am the youngest of 5 at age 20 and my siblings are 28, 41, 43, and 44. My dad is 72, mom is 54. Try explaining that to people! My oldest brother is 10 years younger than my mom (NOT his mom)—My dad has been married 3 times, the oldest 3 with is first wife.

My neighbor has an age gap like that with her two children. She had her first at 18, with her first husband, divorced and remarried some years later, and had her second at 36 with her new husband. So, her first daughter had just left home when she had her second. It worked out pretty well for her though, because she only has a two-bedroom home. It creates an interesting dynamic, because they are essentially only children, not really having a sibling around while growing up.

My mother is remarried and I have a half-brother who is 15 years younger than me. It is reallt strange noticing the relationship differences between me and my brother and my younger sister (who still lives at home) and my brother.

While she is the one who fights with him (nothing is funnier than watching a 22 year old fight with a primary school kid!), my husband and I are the ones who let him stay up late and let him swim in our pool for hours when he comes to visit. And when he is in trouble, we are the ones he confides in. Plus he now has a nephew who thinks he is the coolest thing in the world and is now his hero.

I wouldn’t swap the big age group for anything in the world :)

This is the same situation with my dad – I’m 14 and my dad is 73, he has two children from a previous marriage who are 46 and 44, and they each have three kids, aged 27, 15, 14, 13, 12 and 10. So, my nieces and nephews have become like cousins to me because we’re so close in age. It’s different, but it has it’s good sides :)

Does anyone have a big age gap with a sib where the two of you have the same parents? My parents had 4 kids in 5 years then had me 12 years later. People always assume I’m from a remarriage.

My husband is 33 years my senior (he’s 86, I’m 53). We’ve been married since September, 1986. I met him when he was 54, I was 21. I will be 54 in February! His first marriage ended in divorce. His first two children are ages 53 and 51. Our daughter together was born in June, 1988. She is now a senior in college. She is good friends with her nieces and nephews: ages 22, 19, 18, 16, 16 and 13. She has grown up with them, and looks forward to our annual family reunion on a lake in Maine each summer! My husband’s father was 40 years older than my mother-in-law (he died at age 93, and she died at 99!). My daughter can say that her grandfather was born in 1860. He remembered when men sat around the pickle barrel in the general store and told stories about serving in the Civil War! Her grandmother (who was called the “First Lady” of Ithaca, NY because of her lifelong devotion and service to this city), remembered when the Titanic went down in 1912. She was 15 years of age at that time — by the way, Titanic is my daughter’s FAVORITE movie!!!

My parents had me when they were older. My dad was 54 and my mom 45. I have a brother who is 17 yrs older than me and sister who is 25 yrs older than me – SAME MOM, SAME DAD. I grew up with my neice and nephews who now have children older than mine! I’m only 41 but have lost both parents – but Dad made it to 91.
