Mom-of-two Alison Sweeney is smitten with motherhood. “Oh my gosh, there are so many awesome parts about it!” she raves in a new interview with Babble. “It’s seeing my kids grow up, seeing them smile, being a part of their lives, and giving them a hug.”
And while she calls “every day…the best part about being a mom,” Alison admits the responsibility comes with its fair share of struggles too. “Obviously there are parts that are more difficult,” she concedes. “My husband and I are both strict parents. We take our discipline and manners very seriously.”
That said, Alison insists,
“So is there something I’d want to pass off? No. I love all of it. I love everything.”
That is, however, until she is reminded of the dreaded diaper changes! “Well, diapers are brutal. They’re gruesome,” she agrees. “And sometimes, early mornings or middle-of-the-night [wake-up calls] can be…” she trails off before awarding credit to her husband and “tag-team” partner David Sanov. “My husband and I work together; we’re very much a team,” she shares.
“We trade off. If I have an early call he handles a midnight nightmare and I do the opposite.”
Despite Dave’s support, Alison finds herself seeking out her own mom for parenting advice, which, in turn has her becoming “more and more like my mother every day!” Fortunately, when Alison welcomed her first child — son Benjamin Edward — in 2005, her mom was on hand to offer a unique perspective on becoming a first-time parent.
“[She told me], ‘Parent your first child as if you already had a child,” she recalls. “So imagine if your baby is crying and imagine if you’re holding your other one-year-old at that moment, what would you do? You wouldn’t just drop your one-year-old and go running in because your other baby is crying.”
Instead, coaches Alison, take a deep breath and relax! “It gives you the ability to take a step back and realize it’s not the end of the world and it will be okay to take one more second,” she adds.
With her responsibilities as host of The Biggest Loser, Alison sympathizes with mothers who find themselves short on time. However, instead of dwelling on her busy schedule, Alison is determined to make the time she does have with Ben and her daughter Megan Hope, 11 months, worthwhile.
“I commit to [my kids], give them my full attention and put everything aside, so that time is precious. Whether it’s playing Candyland or playing with the T-ball, we’re having fun together, not just watching TV.”
