Sarah Jessica Parker Raves About Her 'Darling Little Girls'

Bryan Bedder/Getty Images

While some parents mellow with each subsequent child, Sarah Jessica Parker has found the opposite to be true.

In a new interview with PARADE, the 44-year-old actress says that after son James Wilkie, 7, was born she would “walk up the stairs to his room” if she heard crying. With twins Marion Loretta Elwell and Tabitha Hodge, 6 months this week, however, there’s a greater sense of urgency! “Now I’m running up and down the stairs like a lunatic, barely holding on to the banister,” she reveals.

“I don’t think you worry less in general. I think I’m still woken in the middle of the night by some horrible thought that I’ve conjured in my brain. Every time there’s a visit to the pediatrician, I worry. Is everything all right?”

Life as a family of five continues to suit Sarah Jessica and husband Matthew Broderick just fine, with the seamless addition of the twins this summer. “It’s sort of beyond description,” she says. “It’s a very, very lucky, wonderful time in our lives that we have these two darling little girls and we’re very happy.”

Balancing her busy career with her even busier private life is tricky — but doable — and Sarah Jessica is careful to point out that she has help. “I honestly think there are millions and millions of working mothers who have far more demanding days and the rewards are nowhere near what I’ve been given,” she says.

“They don’t have the kind of help that I have if I need it. I’m allowed to be a working mother because frankly, I can leave my child with someone I trust and love and a lot of mothers can’t do that.”

Maggie Gyllenhaal on Her Relatable New Role

Splash News Online

For actress Maggie Gyllenhaal, playing a mom in Crazy Heart came naturally. Not only is she a real life mom to Ramona, 3, Jean — her character in the film — experiences revelations about motherhood and personal sacrifice at the same time Maggie says she was experiencing them, herself.

“My daughter was almost two when I made the movie and I kind of got to this place where I felt like, ‘I am also me. I am also an actress,’” she explains to Movies Online. “I had this really strong hunger to express something that I hadn’t had for a while when she was a tiny baby.”

Although Maggie filmed Batman and Away We Go in the months after Ramona’s birth, the film shoots were short — 15 days and three days, respectively. Those movies got “a little” of her creative energy, but Crazy Heart “got almost all of it,” she adds.

“When I look at the movie now, I kind of see Jean is really going through a similar thing,” Maggie explains. “I don’t know if that’s just part of the movie inherently or I put it there, but I think for Jean it’s like she’s got this four-year-old who, at least for a big chunk of time, she’s been raising alone.”

“She’s just been trying to do good, trying to be good, trying to manage, trying to manage, trying to manage and I think she just finally says, “I need something for me. I need something that feels good to me and I don’t care if it’s bad for me. It’s better if it’s bad for me.’”

The balance between “what you need in order to be alive” and “what you have to sacrifice for your kids” is “a line every mother walks,” Maggie, 32, feels. “I think if you’re a mother, you know what I mean,” she adds.

Ramona is Maggie’s daughter with husband Peter Sarsgaard. Crazy Heart is in theaters now.

Marissa Jaret Winokur's Hanukkah at Home

Ray Kachatorian for PEOPLE for use on CBB

When Marissa Jaret Winokur recalls her favorite childhood Hanukkah memories, “it was never about presents,” says the actress, 36. “It was about family.”

She’s set on making it the same for Zev Isaac, her 17-month-old son with her husband, writer Judah Miller.

Since Zev joined the brood, “we celebrate Hanukkah with renewed vigor,” says Marissa, who hosted her family’s festivities for the first time in her L.A. home this year.

“Zev will learn a lot of the religious, meaningful things from his dad — and the lighter side from me.”

Take Mom’s high-stakes dreidel game, in which her parents and three siblings up the ante with candy. “We play dreidel like poker!”

Just don’t ask Marissa to make latkes — a holiday must she has yet to master. “I’m good at eating them, not making them. Zev will have his first latkes this year!”
