Maybe they are laughing at danger b/c Jake is hardly secured properly in the cart—for cryin’ out loud people just strap ‘em in!

- Angie W on

Angie, I am going to repeat your sentiment. Shopping carts, when not used properly, are extremely dangerous. I know parents think they are watching very closely, or they won’t fall out, etc. However, all it takes is one second for your child to reach for something, full something heavy onto him, fallout, etc. and be crushed or receive a life changing head or neck injury.
When I was young, my sister was standing and holding onto the back end of a shopping cart. The cart, full of items, flipped over even with just her 30 lbs of added weight to make the cart off balance. Hello, broken nose!

OMG. I don’t even know what to say about the comments about him not being strapped in. They are clearly either just starting their shopping or just finishing up their shopping. How do you know he wasn’t already strapped in? Or that she’s getting ready to strap him in?

- Jenn on

Dear God. As soon as I say this picture I knew they would be a comment because he is not strapped. Good Lord people on this site are so critical. It is ONE photo. For all you know this kid was strapped in the whole time they shopped prior to this moment.

Jake looks sooo much like mommy…cute!

Calm down! Courtney probably just unstrapped him as they’re getting to the car. I admit it isn’t the smartest thing to do because Jake is standing up, but I’m sure this doesn’t make her a bad mom! Anyways, Jake looks exactly like Roger (his daddy) and has mommy’s hair coloring.

First of all Jake is one cute kid! Second I cannot imagine having pictures taken of me and my kids and then having them critiqued by strangers who have obviously never done anything but parent perfectly. Shopping carts can be dangerous but can we give her a little credit and assume that he was just fine for the shopping trip? Why must we go straight to her being neglectful?

- ruby on

Wow, am I an idiot for not seeing anything wrong in this picture? She’s obviously done with her shopping, loading up the car, and getting ready to load Jacob into the car, too. He was likely strapped in the entire time they were in the store and is only out now, because they are done shopping and he’ll be getting into the car within minutes. Yeesh.

She is standing right next to him, chill out everyone. Yes, they may be dangerous, but I highly doubt he is in any real danger here. At least he is wearing warm clothing ;)

Lets focus on the most important thing here – it looks like mummy and son are having a great time at the shops together.

adorable mother and son!

I do this with my daughter often, she hates to be strapped in and if she sits there and screams people give me eye rolls or huff and puff in my direction. I can’t win either way. I make sure she’s up towards my end and holds on to the back of the “seat”, and yes I do keep my eyes or a hand on her at all times. Not all of us who do this are complete idiots or unaware that it’s dangerous.

mrsh, I didn’t see anything wrong with it either! Guess that’s because I’m a terrible mommy and do this too though:)

Cute photo, they look happy.

No need for strapping in in shopping carts, the carts in my town don’t even have straps! Actually I have never seen shopping carts with straps.

He actually does not appear to be in the child’s seat, but standing in the cargo section of the cart.

- Colleen on

my daughter hated the cart seat, too… but while we were shopping, the rule was either sit in the cargo section (toward my end), walk (holding my hand, the cart, or on a child harness), or be in the sling/wrap/carrier.

I’m sure he was only standing up because he knew they were done shopping (I see a full bag in her cart) and knew she was going to put him in his seat, or, because he saw someone he recognized and got excited… she was standing right there and I’m sure she would have corrected him if they were going to be moving… remember, the picture only took one second to take… it’s not even a minute of their lives.
