Kerri Walsh Is Pregnant – Again!

Frazer Harrison/Getty

Beach volleyball star Kerri Walsh has her heart set on bump, set, spiking her way to the gold once again at the 2012 games in London. But first, the two-time Olympic gold medalist is preparing for another baby.

“I’m pregnant again so I’m taking this year off,” Kerri reveals to Universal Sports.

Due May 30th, she plans to spend her spring enjoying her new family of four, including husband Casey Jennings and their son Joseph Michael, 6 months.

“I’ll be taking care of my family and starting to creep back into shape and I’ll be ready for the 2011 season.”

Kerri’s time off will leave her partner Misty May-Treanor in search of a new sidekick for the first time since the pair began playing together in 2001. “I’m definitely a little jealous, but I’m really excited for her,” Kerri, 31, admits. “I know she’s going to kick butt and it’ll be a great team to root for. And also be motivating because I want my partner back.”

Still, she notes, the switch is only temporary! “My hope and plan is for Misty and I to get back together and be better than ever,” she says.

“The goal is to play together and win in 2012, to win an Olympic gold medal.”

And for those who have their doubts that the new mom will be ready, Kerri’s amazing bounce back after her first baby speaks for itself. Only two months after delivering her son, she was back in a bikini and competing on the AVP Tour.

“Part of the challenge of coming back this year was to make sure that I could do it and I did physically. And once I can wrap my head around it mentally, then I know I’ll be a better player than ever before,” she says.

Wow! That was fast. They remind me of my cousins who have a ten month old and are expecting another baby in July. Congratulations!

- Lynn on

It sounds like when my Mom had my brother and sister. She had my sister in May of ’64 and then had my brother July of ’65. *lol*

- Molly on

Whoa! Good for them!

- mrsh on

Awesome! If she is due May 30th, the baby might come on the same day as big brother, who was the 23rd I think. WOW!

- Amber on

Nope, a day off. Her first son was the 22nd! WOW!

- Amber on

Dang! Congrats to them. I met misty and kerri in high school and kerri was especially nice. I wish her the best.

- Electra on

GOOD FOR HER! That’s such great news! It’ll be great to have the kids so close in age! And she can still get right back and in the 2012 Olympics!

She must have conceived when Joseph was about 2 months old. Someone’s fertile! hehe

- Mandy on

Quite a few of my friends recommend having babies quite close together- not sure I could do it!
Congrats to both parents!

- Louise on

omg!!! can’t believe one of my favorite volleyball players is expecting another baby!!! congrats kerri walsh and casey jennings!

- jacob black lover on

11 months apart? Wow!

- Ashlyn on

Did Misty have a baby in the meantime? I know they both talked about getting pregnant after the Beijing Olympics.

- Sonya on

congrats!!

- sat on

Oh wow!!! I’m so happy for them. I love Kerri! She’s getting all the babies in before she has to start training for the Olympics again! Lol!
@Soyna-No Misti is not pregnant and did not have a baby.

- I♥CBB on

So she’s pulling a Britney Spears, eh?

Congrats

- Mira on

Wow, I said to myself after reading that, “Didn’t she just have a baby a few months ago”? Wow, she is sure going to have her hands full!! I sure as heck wouldn’t happen to me, but all the power to her. Congratulations and best of luck in this pregnancy.

- Shelley on

COOL PROB GOT PREGNANT BY SURPRISE THIS TIME

- NICOLE on

My kids are 15 months apart….I love it! My oldest never developed jealousy (too young, I think). Now at 2 1/2 and 1 I love the way they interact and relate to each other. Congrats to them!!!

- DianeC on

She has a time constraint working against her. 2011 and 2012 will be out for pregnancy since she will be in full training mode followed by the Olympics, and maybe, because she didn’t want to wait till 2013 to have the next one, she thought it would be better to have them close together. She would also be 35 or so in 2013, and the risk for birth defects and infertility goes up then. I say congrats!

- Beverley on

Awesome! My mom’s best friend had her daughter February 7th of this year, and now she’s pregnant with another girl and is due February 12th! Three days difference from Kerri and Casey’s situation! :) Congrats to them!

- Mallory on

Whoa, so soon? Good for her!

I think waiting six months gives you time to readjust. My Grandma had two babies in THE SAME YEAR – my Mum was born in February and my Uncle in December. Being pregnant for almost two years really took a toll on her body, to the point where she was physically ill.

- Rita on

@Rita I bet, pregnancy is no fun especially if you have a baby to take care of. Imagine what Michelle Duggar’s body feels like, it must be a wreck!

- Lauren on

Wow! That was fast her son is only 6 months! But in any case, Congratulations to them! I’m sure it’ll be fun to have two so close together.

- Brooklyn on

Lots of women do it. I admit I too did the math but she will be fine I’m sure. My grandmad had my mom and uncle 11 months apart. My mom started walking two days before my grandma went into labor with my uncle. She said it was perfect timing!

- coco on

My sister & I are close in age (not this close, though) and I always felt it was one of the reasons why we were such close friends. Even if my parents didn’t plan it, it worked out, even if it was awfully hard on my mtoher.

- Elizabeth on

Good grief, I would SO not want to have babies that quickly after one another, but that’s just me! I do think it’s nice when the sibs get older though and are that close in age…I’ve known several people who were born within a year to a year and a half years of each other and it was nice the closeness they developed over the years, especially as they grew into adulthood.

- Jennifer on

That is superfast! I am very close in age to my sister but we are not close friends at all. We like each other ok but no special bond or anything.

I don’t think people should count on siblings being best friends just because they are close in age.

- Anna on

I wonder if she was on the mini pill. I was on it since I was breastfeeding and SURPRISE. :)

- Shay on

Good for her – but this definitely isn’t a practice to be promoting (not saying that she is)! Having an interpregnancy interval (from birth to next) of 6 months or less is quite dangerous for both mother and baby.

- kh on

WOW!! She obviously didn’t want to wait too long for the next baby, lol! :P If it were me, I’d be making sure #2 didn’t come until after my previous baby’s first birthday.

Depending on when her son was born, it’ll be a close race to see if baby #2 will be born before or after Joseph’s first birthday. ;)

Either way, congratulations to them both, babies are always a good thing. :)

- robinepowell on

My brother and sister are the same age for 1 month. We call them the “Irish twins” (ironic because we are Norwegian) haha

- mary on

Misty’s only plan was Dancing with the Stars, which didn’t last more then a couple of weeks, because she injured herself.

As for Kerri’s son, his birthday is May 23, 2009.

Oh boy, she will have her hands full! My toddlers are exactly 13mo apart and it’s wild. My first didn’t walk until my second was 5mo and it was brutally exhausting. It is wonderful having them close and seeing them interact with one another, but it’s a lot of work. I wish Kerri and her beautiful family the best of luck and many blessings!

- Julie on

my two oldest are 10.5 months apart. i love it. my third was born a month ago 14 months after my second. i have 3 under 25 months. it’s not so bad…

congrats to her!

- meghan on

robinepowell (#31) – According to cbb Joseph’s b-day is May 22nd, not May 23rd. :)

I have some friends who have young children 13 months apart. They were supposed to be 14 months, but the youngest was born a month early! I also sit for a family whose kids were 13 months apart. It’s crazy sometimes, but fun, too!! Incidentally, Donovan McNabb and his wife have 3 young children who are just under a year apart. They had twins in December of 2008 and just had another at the end on November of this year. Now that’s going to be chaotic!!!

- Sarah M. on

Yowza! I had to do a triple take on this headline! CONGRATS to them!!! That is something I can’t imagine doing (WAY too much child juggling imho!) but more power to them for doing it! Those kids are going to grow up super close! My brother and I are “Irish twins” and I can’t imagine being in my mother’s position and handling two infants that are so close in age at the same time (aside from actual TWINS-haha) but that is the amazing thing about women. They are…for lack of a better word…AMAZING creatures of strength.

- Rye on

I totally agree Anna! I know lots of folks that have siblings close in age to them and they are not “close” at all. On the other hand my sister and are 7 yrs apart and we are very close. Age has nothing to do with it, it’s more about personalities IMHO. So having kids close in age definitely does not guarantee that they will have a close relationship, especially as adults.

- daniela on

My sister and I are Irish twins, 11 months apart. People look at my mother like she’s nuts when she tells them how “far” apart her kids are!

- Colleen on

Wow! Thats pretty wild! It’ll be a hard 3-4 years or so, but once they go off to school for the day…FREEDOM!

- Em on

My sister and I are not quite a year apart, I am July 5th 1971 and my sister is July 10th 1970. The doctor told my mom she couldn’t get pregnant while breastfeeding, LOL! My sister and I are the best friends. While I couldn’t possibly imagine having my kids so close together I totally admire the ones who do and love it. My best friend has 4 girls all 21mos or less apart (6, 4 1/2, 2 3/4 and 15 mos) she is my idol. :o )

- Abi on

my sib and I are 11 months apart, born in the same year. We played together and everything, but I never felt like I was the oldest. It doesn’t guarantee the siblings will be close.

- june on

I’m so happy about this and I think you may be right, Beverly, with the time constraints.

My brother and I are 14 months apart. We found like cats and dogs growing up but have grown very close throughout the years. My mom and her brother are 10.5 months apart (from July 8 – August 26, my mom is the same age as her brother!). They were VERY close growing up but have since drifted apart. I agree that it just depends on the siblings and their relationship. Having kids close in age doesn’t mean they’ll be any closer friends than siblings far away in age.

- Stephany on

Oh wow, love her and so happy for her! SO not healthy for mom or baby to be that close together!! My doctor told me this with my last because I had asked when was the earliest to get pregnant again…..she said it can cause uterine prolapse, urethral problems, and miscarriage.

- Mitta on

Congrats to her! I agree with Beverly and Stephany about the time constraints being a reason for spacing these two so close together. I’m sure she knows it will be tough to have two little ones and that the second pregnancy will be slightly riskier so soon after the first. But if her only other option (if she wants to be in the 2012 Olympics) is to wait until 2012 to start trying again I can see why she was willing to get pregnant again so soon. She’ll be 34 then and already having had one miscarriage (not that a doctor would say her risk is increased from one miscarriage, but it can change the way you think about your chances in the future). I would have made exactly the same decision.

I think it would be cute if she had a girl this time. :)

Also, I hope Misty gets pregnant soon. Although I’m sure she is thrilled for Kerri, it must also be kind of tough seeing her on her second successful pregnancy already while she is still working on her first.

- Sami on

I just read that she is expecting another boy in an interview.

- Marilyn on

I like totally love Kerri Walsh I am happy she has a great family. she deserves it after all those gold medals.
