Martin Brodeur Welcomes Son Maxime Philippe

Rex USA

New Jersey Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur has welcomed his fifth child, and first with wife Genevieve. The couple’s son Maxime Philippe arrived shortly after 12 noon on Monday, November 23rd, weighing in at just over 8 lbs.

“It went really well,” the proud papa reports. “A big, healthy baby.” Maxime’s name was chosen carefully according to the French-Canadian born Martin, who notes that he’s heard numerous mispronunciations of his own moniker.

“Anything they could say in French and English pretty easy. I figured [Maxime's] pretty easy, and all my other kids are the same way.”

That’s not all baby boy will have in common with his big siblings Anthony, 14, twins William and Jeremy, 13, and Anabelle Antoinette, 7. Crediting assistant equipment manager Alex Abasto, Martin reveals that his newest addition already has his first initial on dad’s hockey helmet, just like the older Brodeur children.

Anthony, William, Jeremy and Anabelle are Martin’s children with ex-wife Melanie Dubois. Martin and Genevieve were married in 2008.

Love Martin Brodeur! Was sorry to see him lose to my Canucks last night (sort of!) and can’t wait for him to represent Canada at the Olympics!!! Congratulations to him and his wife.

Wow I can’t believe they got married. I remember it was a HUGE deal when they first got together because she was his sister-in-law. He may have even cheated on his first wife with her. It was super scandalous, and everything came out during the play offs.

Congrats to Marty and his wife. I hope he leads us to gold in the Olympics. I just feel sorry for the his kids (for anyone who knows about the family dynamics here. Must be confusing for them).

Wow! Is she his ex-wife’s sister or his brother’s ex wife?

- Sonya on

She’s his ex-wifes sister. I find the whole situation sketchy, and awkward for the kids. But, what can you do.

- morgyn on

Sonya:Ex wife’s sister.

- eva on

Oh noes!sorry. She is the ex wife of his ex wife’s brother. So Genevieve was married to Melanie’s brother before marrying Martin.

- eva on

she is the ex-wife of his ex-wife’s brother…which makes little maxime both a brother AND a cousin to the other kids!!! yikes.

- sarah on

Yep, Eva and Sarah are right, she is the ex-wife of his ex-wife’s brother. Confusing.

I can only imagine the family gatherings for them! It really was a scandal when Martin admitted he had cheated on Melanie with her brother’s wife, Genevieve. At that time of the infidelity, Melanie was pregnant with the youngest kid and Genevieve was living with them to help out with the kids.

Even though the children are not related by blood to Genevieve, she was married to their mother’s brother and was their aunt-by-marriage and now is their step-mum.

Melanie did well in the divorve even if her self-esteem took a pummelling (what woman wants to be dumped for her sister-in-law?). Martin recently was ordered by court to pay Melanie US$500,000 a year until 2020. That is on top of US$132,000 in annual child support.

Martin had petitioned to stop paying Melanie spousal support in 2012 when he retires from hockey which meant Melanie would have gotten only US$132,000 in child support until the last kid graduates high school. So good on Melanie for sticking to her guns and getting a pretty good deal out of such a difficult situation.

I’m so happy for him! I love Martin Brodeur so much. ):
But if he’s happy, I’m happy. Maybe.
