Michelle Branch and Owen's Apple Butter Apple Pie

11/25/2009 at 04:00 PM ET

Just how much does Michelle Branch love pie? “I was thinking of tattooing the crust recipe on my arm,” she laughs. This treat is a combo of a Gourmet crust recipe and a filling from New York City’s Buttercup Bake Shop, which Michelle whips up with the help of daughter Owen Isabelle, 4, sometimes tweaking the taste with different fruit butters (a purple sweet-potato butter will turn the filling pink!).

“You can’t go wrong with apple pie,” says Michelle, 26, who calls baking her “zen escape” and wants to open a bakery in Nashville someday. “If you eat it for breakfast with ice cream, you’ve got your fruit and your dairy for the day!”

Apple Butter Apple Pie

Makes: 1 (9-inch) pie Hands-on time: 35 min. Total time: 2 hrs., 10 min.

½ cup sugar
1½ tablespoons all-purpose flour
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
Pinch of ground nutmeg
4½ cups peeled and sliced Granny Smith apples (about 4 large apples)
¼ cup apple butter
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice

1. Preheat oven to 425*.
2. Combine first four ingredients; sprinkle over apples and toss gently. Stir in apple butter and lemon juice.
3. Spoon apple mixture into prepared pastry. Sprinkle Crumb Topping over apple mixture, covering completely.
4. Bake 10 minutes at 425*. Reduce temperature to 350* and bake 25 to 35 minutes or until golden and bubbly. Cool on a wire rack 30 minutes.

Pastry for 9-inch pie:

1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
1½ teaspoons sugar
½ teaspoon salt
½ cup unsalted butter, chilled
2½ to 3 tablespoons ice water

1. Pulse first three ingredients in a food processor three or four times or until combined.
2. Add butter and pulse five or six times or until crumbly. With processor running, gradually add water 1 tablespoon at a time and process until dough forms a ball and leaves sides of bowl, adding more water if necessary. Cover and chill 30 minutes.
3. Roll pastry to 1/8-inch thickness on a lightly floured surface. Place in a 9-inch pie plate; trim off excess pastry along edges. Fold edges under and crimp.

Crumb topping:

1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup uncooked regular oats
2/3 cup light brown sugar
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
10 tablespoons unsalted butter

1. Pulse all ingredients in a food processor three or four times or just until crumbly.

Note: Substitute other fruit butters for apple butter if desired.

That’s adorable! My mom used to say the same thing the Day after Thanksgiving when we’d have apple pie a la mode for breakfast. Only once a year, but what a FUN treat it was!

I♥CBB on

I ♥ Michelle and Owen! One of my ABSOLUTE favorite youtube clips is the one with her and Owen singing “The Bee Song!!!” I’m about to watch it right now. Super cute!!! 🙂

“If you eat it for breakfast with ice cream, you’ve got your fruit and your dairy for the day!”
Haha very cute. I love Owen’s apron!

All Women Stalker on

Well, CRUST is not a pretty word for a tattoo. Haha. But it’s always great to know celebs who are great in the kitchen. 🙂

JMO on

Wow she’s a mini me of her mom for sure!

HeatherR on

Is Michelle still married to Owen’s father? I didn’t notice a ring on her finger. That said, I take my rings off when I cook!

urbanadventurertales on

What a cutie! And apple pie for breakfast is my favorite also 🙂

Simply Bohemian on

OMG! Where have I been, I had NO idea she had a child! Wow, blown away. I will have to try the recipe…..lol

maryjane on

such a cute video of her and own singing the bee song, so sweet. She looks like such a good mom.

Christina on

@ HeatherR – Michelle and David are still married.

Christina on

Correction – I goofed! It’s Teddy Landau, not David, and they are still married.

babymama on

rings don’t equal marriage, that’s rather presumptuous considering this is a girl who has over 10 tattoos and named her daughter owen.

eva on

Babymama: what’s presumptious about it? Is there something about tattoos and names that prevent people from understanding what marriage is? Does a person’s appearance say everything about what they do and think in their private lives?

baby carriers on

I like the John Lennon shirt. The pie looks good too!

Erica on

Owen is adorable, she looks like the 9th Gosselin child

I love, love, love them! Michelle and Owen seem to have so much fun together! Owen is a gorgeous little girl. I wish we got to see more of her

Amber on

Maybe she’s just not wearing her wedding ring because she’s in the dough with her hands…;)

jessie on

her daughter’s adorable, i may try that pie recipe, lol

fuzibuni on

i bet michelle and her family have a lot of good times cooking in that kitchen. I would love to see more photos of the layout… it looks fab.

dickie on

OMG that little girl is cute! what shiny hair!

babymama: yes rings don’t always have to equal marriage but what does tattooing and naming your daughter with a more masculine name have to do with anything?? Quite confused.

Devon on

Most likely she took her rings off since she’s baking. I know I do! My husband can’t wear his ring anymore, he lost 40lbs and it doesn’t fit! But that doesn’t mean we aren’t married. Come to think of it, I really need to get on getting a new one for him! He misses wearing it!

Owen is a cute little girl and I love her name. She looks just like mummy! Can’t believe she is 4 already. Seems like yesterday I was reading about Michelle getting married! Can’t believe we are the same age!!

Dasiy1 on

I think what babymama meant was that wearing a ring is quite conventional/traditional. The tat’s and boys name would hint that Michelle isn’t that conventional. I know my sister in law doesnt always wear her ring simply because she isn’t used to wearing jewellery. It is just a ring after all, the commitment is much more than the jewellery.

I am also surprised & relieved that Michelle & [Teddy?] Landau are still married. As I recall, she was 19 & he was 41 when they married or she became pregnant with Owen. [The only other female Owen I can recall is Owen Vanessa Kugel, Mama Cass Elliott’s daughter]. Owen Kline is the son of Phoebe Cates & Kevin Kline & there is actor/writer Owen Wilson as well. How many more male Owens & female Owens are in show biz? It would be interesting to find out…I always think of Anne Ramsay in THROW MAMA FROM THE TRAIN:
“Owen! Get me a soda, Owen!”

Meesh on

I am so happy to see a picture of her daughter! I don’t think I have EVER seen her! So cute. She looks like her mama! I also like the John Lennon shirt.

meghan on

When I hear the name Owen, I think of Owen Elliot Kugel. So it actually sounds strange to me at this point when I hear it as a man’s name, because I associate it with Cass and her daughter.

Ruthella on

Cute little girl, is Vanessa a musician? And what is apple butter (or any fruit butter, for that matter!)?

replytoqueensophie on

Do the math Queen Sophie. Michelle is now 26. Owen is now 4. She was married at 19…was she pregnant when she got married?

CelebBabyLover on

replytoqueensophia- Calm down, please! Queensophie clearly said that Michelle was 19 when she got married OR when she got pregnant with Owen. Obviously she just couldn’t remember which of the two it was. 🙂

kate on

Guys. Number one, does it really matter what age Michelle was when she got married? It’s her own personal business! However, if you can do math, you’ll realize that Michelle was 22 when she had Owen, and was married for about a year before that. She and her husband (Teddy Landau) are still happily married. He plays bass in her band, and they tour together. Quite the cute, and happy family! Looking forward to hearing her new album Everything Comes and Goes this winter.

Brittany on

Michelle was actually 20 when she got married in (2004), and announced her pregnancy in 05 when she was 4 months pregnant. (I used the search tool to find this out; on this website).

Still Life in South America on

Too adorable! They look like two peas in a pod.

FLFoodieMom on

Ruthella, Apple Butter is a concentrated form of applesauce that is cooked until the apples caramelize; yummy spices are added for flavor. It makes a spreadable jamlike substance that’s delicious! You can make it with other fruits, as well. It’s hard to find Apple Butter in many regions (as well as many other fruit butters, let alone GOOD apple/fruit butters) so you might want to try to make your own, but it is time-consuming and requires canning. I have a great recipe for it. And on the subject of Michelle not wearing her ring…I’m a chef and I NEVER wear my engagement or wedding ring when I’m cooking/baking/cleaning! I’m not sure who Vanessa is that you asked about, but Michelle is an American singer and songwriter and was part of a country music duo with Jessica Harp, but they each went solo. I think Michelle is due to release an album in 2010.

Sarah on

Her daughter is 4 now? Wow, time sure flies–it almost seems like yesterday Michelle was pregnant!

Jessica on

How did I not know Michelle Branch had a baby!? A guess a belated congrats is in order. Baking is one of my favorite things to do with my kids 🙂
