Katie Holmes and Suri: Empire State of Mind

INF

Katie Holmes and her lady in red, 3 ½-year-old daughter Suri, stepped out Saturday morning in the Big Apple.

Later that day, the pair went to see The Lion King at the Minskoff Theatre.

Katie and Suri are currently in New York while the actress films The Romantics on Long Island.

Suri is carrying a Manuella Backpack Doggy in Green ($48).

See a solo shot of Suri below!

she is beautiful, but she is dress as a teenager (just MY opinion)

- sil on

goodness this girl is cute! Although the shoes are still just too creepy on a 3 yr old…

- lindaloo on

She is a cutie :-)

Hard to believe she is nearly four.

Regarding the shoes I could go either way.

- Lola Marie on

LMAO! Seeing Suri in her little heels causes me to laugh……………it’s so cute, but funny seeing her. Her demeanor is so sophisticated! I wish they would get her little bob back though. The bob is definitely Suri’s trademark and oh so chic!

- mermaids614 on

Sil, Suri doesn’t dress like a teenager! Teenagers wear skinny jeans, and Van shoes, and t-shirts! Suri wouldn’t be caught dead wearing anything like that! She’s way too fierce for that!LOL

- mermaids614 on

She’s dressed way too mature for her wee age!! She’s pretty but come on now…..what the heck is up with her wearing heels??!! I’m surprised lil Suri can walk in them!!!

- Doreen on

Oh my, she is too sweet! I love her little girly style. She seems to be such a happy little girl, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a pic of her looking upset or mad.

- Shannon on

Oh my goodness, that bag she’s carrying is just too cute. Anyone know who makes it?

She’s adorable… do I think a 3 year old should be in heels? Perhaps not, but she’s a cute kid, and I love her dress. :)

- Just K on

I think “fierce” is the wrong word here; “spoiled” is more like it. Any “Dr. Google” will tell you that three year olds should not do major walking in heels – it leads to lifetime health issues. Creepy? Maybe. Bad for her health? Definitely. Fierce? No, it’s just wrong. No matter how strong-willed Suri is, no matter how much she wants to choose her own clothes, her parents shouldn’t let her be the boss and put herself in harm’s way. It’s not cute and it’s not funny and I am just in disbelief that Katie turns the other cheek.

- mommaruthsays on

how cute!!Love the heels..I am sure she takes them off when she is home!!All true little girls want little heels!!!

- lisa on

Someone on another site said she’s dressed like one of the ladies from “Sex and the City.” I don’t disagree. Replace the doggie bag with a Chanel purse (which is probably coming this Christmas-let’s be real) and voila.

- Lauren on

Its soo cold in New York right now! You can tell from their faces. And look- Suri has a coat!! Can’t complain about that!

- Erika on

It was cold in the NY/NJ area on Saturday. Colder in NYC because the tall buildings create a lot more wind. Why can’t Katie get the kid to keep her coat buttoned! At least she’s holding her mom’s hand. Strong willed can equal spoiled. Tom and Katie need to stand up for themselves, they are the parents. High heels on a 3 year old? Heck no! Give me a break!

- Sandra on

The heels make me think of the beauty pageant girls who are dressed up amd made up to look way past their age. Creepy.

- Kate on

Seriously now, health issues? She’s a three and a half year old little girl. Do you honestly think she is going to run around in shoes that pinch her feet or cause her pain? Those shoes are probably custom-made for Suri and more comfortable on her than anything you or I own. I do think she looks far too grown up and I wouldn’t let my daughter walk the streets like that, though.

- Felicia on

If I saw a pair of heels in my area or my price range online I’d buy them for my daughter and let her wear them occasionally. They’re so cute, how is different than playing dress up in your mom or grandmother’s shoes? I was in those things allll the time. Suri and Katie are such a cute pair, love it!

- Jessicad on

I was thinkin the same thing Thank Jeebus shes wearing a coat. There is nothing negative for me to say.

- pixie on

A part from the shoes (that I admit I find a bit strange although very cute) she is so not dressed like a teenager or a Sex and the City character! Her dress is typically a kid’s dress and her bag is a dog!!

- Alice on

I’m all for heels while playing dress-up, around the house…but walking around NYC seems a bit much.

- Forever Moore on

It was NOT cold in NYC on Saturday. During the day the temperature was in the high 50s. I was at Central Park with my brood and two of my little ones kept begging to take their jackets off because they were too warm after all of their running around. Suri and her jacket are both fine.

- lizzielui on

lizzielui since when is the upper 50′s not cold? your kids were warm because they were playing, in these pics Suri is walking down the street, does she even have tights on?

- Sandra on

Whether the heels are “appropriate” or not, I’m not even going to touch. That’s up to her parents to decide (and I’m guessing they don’t have a problem with them). However, I am amazed that she likes wearing heels so much! I, as an adult, find heels so annoying and painful. It’s just incredible to me that this tiny little girl actually seems to LIKE wearing them. As a heel-hater, I can’t imagine such a thing :-)

All that aside, I think Suri is a lovely little girl who is being allowed to express herself freely. Whether this constitutes being “spoiled,” whose to say? We don’t know if she gets everything she wants or not.

- mrsh on

I completely agree with mommaruthsays and Lauren…

As for Felicia, yes heels on young children do create health issues. It affects the arch in your feet and cause foot and back problems when you’re older…

In my opinion, dress up shoes that have heels when you’re playing at home is totally fine–or, if Suri were seen wearing her ‘dress up shoes’ outside once or twice because she forgot to take them off, fine–but she is constantly wearing heels (there have been an insane amount of pictures of her in high heels) so she’s obviously wearing them on a daily basis which COULD lead to problems later…

Kids grow up WAY too fast the way it is…I say let her be a kid for awhile longer!

- Melanie on

@ mermaids614 you are right! so maybe i should say a teenager going to a wedding party?? ;)

- sil on

Some people feel weather differently. I for one do not get cold as easily as others, that is why my roommate and I are always battling over how high the heat is. She is ALWAYS cold and I cannot sleep when it is HOT. I was in NY on Saturday and I had on ballet flats, skinny jeans, spaghetti strap and a 3/4 sleeve length light fitted jacket and was fine. To each their own. All of our bodies react differently to the same temperature. When it is hot, I prefer to remain inside with AC down very low

- stedine on

i SO envy suri’s wardrobe allowance. It’s probably way more than my monthly mortgage.

and as for the shoes… while I really hope it doesn’t become a growing trend among tots to wear heels, I think Suri Cruise is well on her way to becoming a serious fashionista and there is nothing we can do to stop her.

and who can blame her? I would probably be asking for designer red dresses and gold shoes if my parents were tom cruise and katie holmes too.

- fuzibuni on

Suri looks like a little woman.

- Terri on

It won’t be what I PERSONALLY will put my daughter (if I have a daughter) in. It is adorable. BUT it is a little much for a 3 year old girl. And the high heels are too much, but they are cute.

Maybe for a wedding party or Thanksgiving or Christmas it would be adorable. When I was little I wore high heels on special ocassions. But for everyday wear? I don’t think it is appropriate.

- Jessi on

Sandra:

You have just proven my point. People experience weather differently so while you may be cold and I most likely burning up. High 50s has never felt cold to me ever and it appears that is the same for other people as well as Suri. There were plenty of people in the park or simply walking down the street in NYC on SAT who did not have jackets on. We were outside in the city most of the day and it was actually quite nice. Suri has on a dress and a coat and her mother is there with a blanket. I think she was fine.

- lizzielui on

suri generally looks better than katie!

- nbmama on

I know I had a fascination with heels when I was little and my mom got me play heels that I could wear around the house but not outside. It was either that or I ruin her heels. I used to walk around wearing hers. Well I tried at least. I wanted to wear my heels outside but my mother put my foot down. My three year old is very stubborn and wants to wear her summer dresses now and I tell her no. There is are some things within reason. She gives me a tantrum but I tell her until she buys her own clothes and lives on her own without my assistance, I am still the parent and she is still the kid. I let my kids have a reasonable length of lease with their clothing choices but they are still little and I am still Mom. I just think what she wears is inappropriate at times but she is not my kid.

- Kate on

isnt it funny?? we see little heels..and say”those will hurt her feet?”but weve seen plenty of celeb kids in flip flops(which have little to no arch support and can cause permanent damage)and never say a word!!!

- lisa on

At least she’s got a coat on! But she should wear some tights/socks whether she’s going to wear those heels or not. She’s a very pretty little girl… obviously spoiled though.

- Jen on

I agree Lisa. I could roll my ankle in a flip flop or a high heel!

I have done it before.

- Jessi on

She is very cute and I do not think that the shoes are such a big deal. My niece is the same age and she has shoes that are for little girls with heels. Also, it was not cold on Saturday, it was actually quite pleasant here in NYC. All you needed was a sweater and you were set, so she is dressed according to the weather. She is really adorable I wish people would stop looking for something to pick at. Obviously she is really happy and that’s all we can ask for a child.

- anne on

i love suri’s style, lol

- jessie on

Lisa-
I guess I don’t really see celebrity kids in flip flops–and if I do, they are definitely older–10, 11, 12…by that age, it’s not going to affect you as much as when you’re 3 years old..generally I see the younger kids (under 5ish) in sandals with more support…

- Melanie on

Mommaruth,I absulutely agree with you.I think Katie has lost all touch with reality.Heels on a kid not funny or cute.

- I'm judgemental on

LOL Suri is too funny with her mini heels!

- Jasmine C. on

OH MY GOD look at how she holds that dog purse with such entitlement! The child is obviously spoiled! (That’s SARCASM for the uptight mom brigade) I swear some people on here…

Looks to me like happy little girl, happy to be spending time with her mom :)

- alli on

See Jessicad that’s why I said I could go either way. Part of me thinks those shoes aren’t really for a 3 year old, but then again you can find those little plastic ones in toy stores made specifically for dress up. In a way its like letting her be a little girl.

Regardless she does look so cute! Its like she is playing dress up.

- Lola Marie on

She must love wearing dresses and heels! That’s all she seems to be in these days! I bet next year she’ll all be about wearing runners or something! lol.

- Brooklyn on

Wow! She wears a coat and people immediately attack her on something else. I wonder what will happen when the photos of her in rainboats are posted….

I think she looks cute and happy. As long as she is happy I don’t see that it matters if she buttons her coat.

- Anna on

Nice to see the pics with her in a coat. Cause on other sites she is not wearing a coat!!! And I usually don’t dwell on that but yeah it’s freezing over this way! okay not freezing but low 50′s in the day which for me is cold enough for a jacket! I don’t see a big deal in dressing her the way they do but if she really wants to wear dresses (and no coat) why don’t they invest in long sleeve dresses. IDK Suri to me seems spoiled and def. gets to do as she pleases. I don’t want to know what this child is doing 10 years from now!
And the shoes according to a doctor are okay for short periods of time but should not be worn in excess cause they stretch the ligaments in their legs which are still growing. So far I’ve seen Suri in heels a lot. I guess they didn’t get the memo. Then again they didn’t get the memo about other things to!

- JMO on

Just my silly opinion, but why is she wearing something my 14 year old would wear? Heels? She is a toddler. They already grow up so fast why rush it? Not trying to be judgmental, just a bit baffled ;-)

- Simply Bohemian on

if she’s old enough to be walking around NYC in heels, then i’d say it’s probably time to leave the blanky at home…

- SH on

I know this debate comes up every time, but heels on a 3-4 year old? I am incredulous. Never on my child.

- Trinh on

stedine- I couldn’t agree more! I am very “hot-blooded” as well, and to me, the upper 50s is definently NOT cold! :)

JMO- Just because we’ve seen lots of photos of Suri in heels lately doesn’t mean that she is in them all day every day. We need to remember that these photos represent maybe five minutes of their day at the absolute most (and usually it’s probably more like two minutes or less).

In fact, the first time she was pictured in heels, she was also pictured wearing regular old tennis shoes later that same day. So I think it’s a pretty safe bet that Suri changes out of her heels when they start hurting her feet. :) In otherwords, for all we know, she may wear her heels for only a few minutes each day.

Brooklyn- I think you said it best of all! Considering that we’ve only recently started seeing Suri in heels, I honestly think that it’s just a phase she’s going through, just like how Shiloh Jolie-Pitt has been dressing tomboyish lately. :)

lisa and Jessi- How is wearing flip-flops any different than going barefoot, which also obviously doesn’t provide any arch support? I strongly dislike wearing shoes and socks (it appears that Suri is the same way about socks, as she is rarely seen wearing them! :) ), and am basically barefoot all the time unless I’m out in public. My feet are just fine, thank you very much! :)

Also, for the record, I once sprained my ankle badly when I was a kid, and I was wearing regular old sneakers. My point is, you can turn your ankle no matter what type of shoe you’re wearing. For that matter, you can even turn your ankle if you’re barefoot!

All of that said, I love Suri’s little doggy bag! :)

- CelebBabyLover on

I now understand why Suri won’t wear coats. They have to match her dress/outfit.

I don’t dislike the heels, but lately it seems that’s all she’s wearing. Occasionally, okay, but as a regular feature. No.

Also, I’ve accepted that Suri is never going to be a kid. She’s already womanly in many ways. As someone who enjoyed my childhood and my kid years, I find it hopelessly sad. There’s something wonderful about being a kid and getting dirty from playing in wild abandon. I pity people who miss that.

- mimi on

beautiful girl…but imo – HATE the heels. party = yes, casual = no.

- kimberley on

It says they were going to a showing of The Lion King. Maybe she was dressing up to go to the theater. Poor baby girl. So glad she has so many critizing and scrutinizing eyes looking out for her.

- Jen on

I wouldn’t put my daughter in heels, but the key word is MY. Suri is not MY daughter, she is Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’s daughter and they can put her in whatever they want. I see girls as young as Suri wearing heels all of the time in my city, and you can even buy high heeled “stripper boots” in toddler sizes, so clearly there is a market for it. However, Suri was dressed up to go to the theatre and there is NOTHING wrong with teaching a child to take pride in their appearance for special events. Suri likes dresses, so Tom and Katie let her wear dresses. Sometimes you’ve got to pick your battles when it comes to clothes with kids, I mean, what’s more important, that Suri holds hands while crossing the street or uses her manners, or that she wears pants from Target with holes in the knees because armchair critics say she should?

- Mary-Helen on

Mary-Helen, I could not put it better myself. Your comment is probably one of the best I have ever read on the topic of a Suri-related blog post. Kudos to you!

- Raisa on

A Jay-Z reference??? CBB I LOVE YOU!!!

Love Suri’s trench.

- Jessica on

CBL: I obviously agree with you too! I have rolled my ankle several times in barefeet, flip flops, and high heels! There aren’t any difference, but you hardly see anybody WALKING barefooted.

- Jessi on

I just stumbled across this on PEOPLE.com’s “Caught in the Act”: “In New York City for the weekend, Katie Holmes stopped into Soho Baby, where 3-½-year-old daughter Suri was especially taken by a train set.”

Just goes to show that, while Suri may appear to be very girly and at times adult-like, she not only obviously enjoys age-approprite things, but isn’t always the girly-girl we all think she is, either! :)

- CelebBabyLover on

The heels are not ideal for a growing foot..ask a Pediatrician! It’s fine to play dress up but to be walking constantly in them is bad for her arches and the growth of a foot, and I have seen lots of different photos with her wearing them as everyday shoes…and yes, that is her parents right to allow it, whether she is Suri Cruise or a kid next door to you..it is not good for her feet. And to compare flip flops to high heels is apples and oranges…I mean technically I can trip in any shoe I am wearing..even a good tennis shoe..I think the fact here is that this is still a toddler…maybe at the end of being a toddler but neverless a toddler.

- Gabbadoo on

Thats ridiculous..just because there is a market for it..lol

- Gabbadoo on

Gabbadoo- No, high heels are not the best for a person’s feet. However, we don’t know how much she actually wears them. Like said earlier, these photos of her that we see represent five minutes of their day at the absolute most. There ARE 24 hours in a day, and we’re only seeing a tiny fraction of ONE of those hours in each set of photos of her.

For all we know, she may only wear her heels for a half hour or less each day. As for comparing high heels to flip-flops…in terms of the likelyhood of tripping and twisting your ankle, yes, it is apples to oranges.

However, it’s apples to apples when you compare them in terms of being bad for your feet. High heels can damage the arch, and flip-flops have no arch support, so they can result in foot problems, too.

- CelebBabyLover on

CelebBabyLover- Yes flip flops are not ideal footwear either…I personally do not let my children wear them..well I do let my 8 year old wear them to the pool. And yes there are 24 hours in a day and I don’t think she wears them 24/7…but in several different photos she has worn them on outings…different colors and different days. Like I said, she is not my child and what I may or may not allow for my children may be entirely different for the Cruise family. I do know, having 3 small children that the footwear you provide your children is an important matter…so I might not allow my daughter to wear those shoes as her “normal” shoes, I would not be against them for playtime, or even going to a Lion King show, as Suri is in the photo.

- Gabbadoo on

Haha I just have to comment on the person who asked “since when is upper 50′s warm???”..it must all be relative, because here in northeastern Ohio, upper 50′s is warm! The first spring day we’ve got weather that temperature around here we’re pulling out our grills and lawnmowers! I think Suri’s jacket is fine for such weather. The shoes….ehh. I have my opinions but I’m so tired of these debates so I’m staying out of it!

- Anne on

Anne- I agree! I’m from the midwest, and believe me, the upper 50s is considered warm here! In fact, we practically cheer when the tempurature gets that high at this time of year! :)
