Stanley Tucci Dishes on His 'Proudest Moment' As a Dad

Maxppp/Landov

Earlier this year, Stanley Tucci suffered an unimaginable blow when Kate Tucci — his wife of 14 years — died of cancer. In the wake of that loss, the 50-year-old actor has taken over countless duties and in a new interview with WebMD magazine he says that there is one duty in particular he could live without.

“I’d rather be a sous chef at Lutèce than pack those darn school lunches,” he jokes.

“My proudest moment is when I actually get the school lunches packed in time!”

In his upcoming film The Lovely Bones, Stanley portrays a pedophile and murderer, a role he describes as “the hardest thing” he’s ever done.

“I can’t bear to watch anything where kids are getting hurt,” he explains. “I was up in the air about [accepting the role]…It was a challenge, and I like a challenge. I’m glad I did it.”

When it comes to explaining danger to his 9 ½-year-old twins Isabel and Nicolo and daughter Camilla, 7, Stanley says that “a little fear is OK.” He elaborates,

“It’s important for children to understand what they should and should not be afraid of. I worked closely with an FBI guy [for The Lovely Bones], and he would tell his own kid: ‘See that guy over there?’ He’d pick ‘em out, and tell them exactly what to look for. But ultimately, we all have to keep a close eye on our children.”

The Lovely Bones hits theaters December 11th.

I’m sure Stanley is doing a great job of being there for his children. I can’t imagine being in his position.

Also I’m excited for The Lovely Bones, I love the book and the trailers for the film seem to suggest it’s a far better adaptation than I’d have hoped for!

Hadn’t he been separated from his wife for a long time before she died?

I had no idea his wife had passed. How terribly sad. :-(

I thought they must’ve been separated because I know he dated Edie Falco for awhile several years back. Still sad.

I babysit for a person who lost her husband through leukemia and they didn’t know about it until he went to the ER and he passed away a few hours later. She was pregnant with their daughter and they already had a 4 year old and 2 year old boys. It has been extremely hard to be a single mother to three little kids under the age of 5. Now the children are 6, 3, and 1. The 6 year old just had a birthday and he passed in July of 2008. So sad. I wish all of the luck to this family.

I totally feel for him with the school lunches. The day to day effort of trying to be inventive and yet pack stuff that will still taste good after sitting around the lunchbox for four hours, plus getting it all ready in time to head out the door (I do mine the night before), is huge. It takes a big man to admit that :-)

I knew his wife passed away, but I had no idea they have such young children. I thought if they had any kids they were young adults at least. Best wishes to them; I can’t imagine how unbearable that pain must be. On another note, I can’t wait to see The Lovely Bones; it looks incredible, and I had no idea Stanley’s even in it from watching the trailer. He’s unrecognizable.

I also had no clue his wife had passed away. I know he left her to be with Edie Falco and then I heard he reunited back with his wife after Edie dumped him. How sad.

Yes folks he did have an affair with Edie Falco. He was even shacking with her. He and his wife reconciled around the time she was diagnosed. He said he went back for the kids…now these wonderful, tender comments about his feelings for his wife….Well….I hope SHE believed them and had that solace (such as it was) during her battle with cancer. I’m sure he loves his kids…..I feel bad for them…poor babies ….so young to lose their Mommy….

What does it matter if he and his wife had been seperated? Doesn’t make his loss decrease any. People don’t bring it up when we see pics of Michelle Williams with Matilda. Seperated or not to loose someone who had been a co-parent and partner and such a big part of your life is devastating.

I agree Daisy….good heavens. At at the end of the day three little kids dont have a mommy anymore. GIve it a rest people!!!!

Its sad and I hope they all lean on each other for support and healing.

Mr. Tucci– I have recently read this article. I hope you are still doing well. I know how difficult it is to have to carry on. Things will be all right. Just keep the priorities straight….and kids don’t mind the same sandwich several days in a row. If you are making that sandwich they should be grateful. I had to make my own. And if they do mind the lunch, they need to learn flexibility, compassion for a parent doing his best, humility and tolerance. I have a feeling your kids will be fine.

I adore this actor!! and admire him!! Mr Stanley Tucci you are amazing!!!

Was in New York for the first time last year ( May09) and saw Stanley Tucci in a drugstore on Lexinton Ave, I remember how sad he looked, now a year later I know why his wife had just sadly passed away, so sorry to hear that.
