Thandie Newton Says Pain Is a Great Teacher

Call it tough love! Thandie Newton has a message for her two girls as they grow up: Pain is all part of life.

The British actress was giving the advice after she bought her daughters, Ripley, 9, and Nico, 4 ½, bikes. Rip — as her mom calls her — cannot yet ride and was in tears because she had been teased by a young friend who said she would fall off.

“I said, ‘Yes baby, but you’ll get back on again and it’ll be sweeter for having fallen off,’” Thandie notes.

Thandie — the cover star for December’s U.K edition of InStyle — says that she has explained to her girls that the answers to problems are often found within themselves. “Don’t be afraid of pain because it’s part of life and it’s a great teacher,” says the actress. “Just get back on that bike.”

She adds, “One of the best things about being a mum is that you can cradle your kids metaphorically when they’re sad, but not eradicate discomfort because it’s valuable to them.”

The actress, who celebrated her 37th birthday last week, was speaking to the magazine to promote her upcoming apocalypse movie 2012. Posing for a series of shots that show off her lean frame, Thandie reveals her secret is Jivamukti yoga.

“It’s my food for the soul,” she tells the magazine. “When I’m not working, I’ll drop Rip off at school and Nico at nursery, then I go to yoga. I also have an amazing personal trainer who I see whenever I can. His name is Liston Wingate-Denys.”

Ripley and Nico are Thandie’s children with husband Ol Parker, whom she wed in 1998. 2012 hits theaters Friday.

i find it weird that when she doesnt work she still drops off her kids to exercise. shouldnt she want to spend time with her kids?????

^ I think you misunderstood what she said. She works out when the kids are at school.

@ Casey: So her children shouldn’t go to school? Besides it’s not like yoga lasts all day. Having some time to work on herself probably makes her a more balanced person and parent. Her girls will probably appreciate it in the long run. :)

Aw I empathise with Ripley. I didn’t learn to ride my bike til I was 8 or 9, worse still my younger sister beat me to it! I remember my dad trying to teach me, but his method of teaching was a bit mean (“I’m holding on to the bike, honest” when he wasn’t, and I’d figure it out quickly and stop). But one day when my dad was at work I decided to prove him wrong (which seems silly, he was trying to teach me to ride if after all, he didn’t want me to fail!) and got my bike out and just started riding it! Ripley will get there eventually, and like Thandie implied, it’s nice to prove you CAN do something!

Casey, at 4 1/2, her daughter is already in nursery school, which is more than common in the UK. So forgive her for not using her free time to take some time for herself.

When my kids were younger, my mum would come around and look after them so I could go to the gym for an hour or so. It was something which I loved before I had kids and something I really missed when my youngest was first born, the chance to pop the iPod on and block out all sounds and thoughts. I would go to the gym, sweat it out, have a shower at the gym, go to the supermarket to do the weekly shop and then come home refreshed. I found once I started going, I had more energy, slept better and felt better about myself. Plus my mum loved that she was able to help and had some real quality time with her grandkids.

Judge me if you will, but taking those few hours every week for myself made me a better mother and wife. Everyone copes in different ways and just because they aren’t the same as yours doesn’t mean it is wrong.
