Wayne and Coleen Rooney Welcome Son Kai Wayne

It’s a boy for footballer Wayne Rooney and wife Coleen. The couple welcomed son Kai Wayne Rooney at 2:20 p.m. on Monday, November 2nd at Liverpool Women’s Hospital in their native England. He weighed 8 lbs., 2 oz.

Baby boy was apparently somewhat hesitant to make his debut; Coleen was nine days overdue according to a rep, who adds,

“Mother and baby are both absolutely fine. Wayne and Coleen are thrilled with the wonderful addition to their family life.”

The pregnancy was announced in April, with Coleen, 23, calling expectant motherhood “the best thing that’s ever happened to me.” Kai is the first child for the couple, who were married in June 2008.

I used to live in the UK…it’s ‘funny’ because some of the tabloids there are asking the question “What is behind their strange name choice of Kai”? I chuckled because I know at least 6 Kai’s! When I lived there, I chuckled every time I met a Rupert or Barney or Alfie! I guess that even though the UK seems so close to North America…we still see that baby names here are ‘weird’ to them and theirs are ‘weird’ to us!

I would agree that Kai is not an unusual name in the UK – certainly not unique like Brooklyn or Cruz for example (the same fuss was made about their names at the time – I’m sure you remember!). One of my old neighbours has a Kai who must be about 10 or 11 by now. Congratulations to them both xxx

Also, these articles saying it’s an unusual name have also stated that Kai is number 68 is the top 100 names of 2008 in the UK, so I’m confused as to why they think it’s strange, sure 68 isn’t top 10 but it’s not like they named him something that was the thousandth most popular name.

Maggie, selling wedding photos and baby photos are totally different. In the case of the wedding both Coleen and Wayne would have been in agreement and signed a contract. A baby can’t give its permission and I think it is rude suggest that they are hypocrites for not selling photos of their first born. It’s their choice to make.

Jenn, a WAG is short for Wives and Girlfriends in England it’s a term for the Wives and Girlfriends of Premiership Footballers. It’s not a nice thing to be called a WAG, they are sort of thought of as a waste of time!! (to put it nicely!)

If you read my comment you will see i noted that it was indeed their choice to make. Im merley pointing out that here in Ireland we have a huge influx of UK media and Coleen has given lots of interviews in OK magazine all through the pregnancy. Also, i fully understand a baby cant give permission to be photographed. Its just my opinion that if you want somethin kept private than dont sell interviews in the run up to the birth. Also, it worries me about the length the media will go to anyway to get pics of Kai.

I’m English and i know two adult Kai’s. One is a female aged 22 and one is a male aged 25. So it’s not really unusual to me. Also i can take them seriously as adult names because i’m just used to them.

‘Kai’ is becoming more popular in the UK these days. The name ‘Cai’ (pronounced the same) has been a very popular and traditional name used in Wales for a while. I always suspected it might make it over the border into England just like ‘Rhys’, ‘Dylan’ and ‘Morgan’ did!

Where did Kai come from? It’s already been used twice as a celebrity baby name. Jennifer Connelly named her son Kai, and Naomi Watts named her son Samuel Kai. Coleen knows her celebrities; she is just following the trend.

Lila (#24) – Parminder Nagra has a Kai David and Donald Trump Jr. has a Kai Madison (female), also. (I don’t know if you’ve heard of her, but she was in ‘Bend It Like Beckham’ and ‘ER’). And they are a good spread of ages, too. Jennifer’s is 10 or 11, Naomi’s is 2 and Parminder’s is only a few months old and Donald’s is 2. It’s not a new name, it’s just gaining in popularity recently.

I can totally imagine an adult named Kai. Now Peanut (isn’t his middle name Kai?), Pilot Inspektor, Moxie CrimeFighter, Bronx Mowgli, Apple, Bandit, etc., that’s another thing altogether!!

When I was pregnant 3 1/2 years ago – we had the name Kai picked out but the scans were wrong and we had a girl! Its a lovely name and not at all unusual.

Just because other celebrities have used the name does not mean Coleen and Wayne were influenced by them. Of course it’s a possibility but it not a stretch that they just so happened to like the name. Besides, I happen to know two male Kai’s who are in their twenties; much older than those celebrities’ sons.

When I was expecting my second child, Kai was one of the top three boy’s names I had settled on before giving birth. After my son was born, I opted for a different name since Kai just didn’t seem to fit him.

Kai is a popular name for boys here in Germany and I like it. I think it’s great that they didn’t choose a “celebrity child name” but instead opted for a fairly uncommon but classic name.

Kai is a Nordic name, as far as I know – it’s the name of the boy in Hans Christian Andersen’s story The Snow Queen. I think it’s a lovely name, but I’m not sure it really ‘goes’ with Wayne and Rooney – but that wasn’t something they had much choice over!

Kai is a cute name. Seem to be a few countries with meanings re the name Kai. Here in NZ it’s the Maori word meaning ‘food’, which I think of, but still like it (of course being in the UK will mean nothing to them and not matter anyhow, lol). Congrats to the new parents. I often see her columns on the UK OK mag site.

she reminds me of a friend in this picture, which makes her quite sympathetic. on the other hand, I’ve read that she thinks that animals exist primarily to be turned into clothes – I so hope this is just a malicious rumour! plus having a career in showbiz when your boyfriend/husband is a famous footballer is not exactly a big deal or does not not make you a wag. I don’t mean to hate and hadn’t intended to comment at all, just found some of the comments rather odd.

Liliana (#28) – I didn’t mean to imply that they chose the name because they were following the lead of other celebs. Others were commenting that they hadn’t heard of it until fairly recently among celeb babies. Those are just the ones I happen to know of. I’m sure there are MANY more people (male and female) who happen to have the name. The majority of names you hear can be dated back quite a ways, people just don’t realize it…(Jennifer’s son is 12, I thought he was a bit younger.)

Kai is also a Hawaiian name. Benny Kai is a great singer/entertainer in Hawaii and can imitate Louis Armstrong very well.
His daughter Natasha Kai represented the United States soccer in the last world cup and still in the women’s professional league.
