I really feel that Mel B has done her youngest daughter a great disservice by giving her a shaved mohawk. Hair grows back, but not that fast and in a couple years when this little girl starts preschool and kindergarten with friends who have pigtails and other regular hairstyles, there’s going to be a problem. I’m all for parents raising their kids how they want, but that is too much of a irresponsible parental decision.

Yep, everytime i see her i just feel really bad for this little angel. You are right RWF, kids on school sometimes can say very cruel comments. At least, i would not expose my daughter to something like that.

Seriously? 1) She’s only 2. 2) Hair doesn’t take long to grow back. 3) If you’re concerned about teasing, be sure to teach your children to respect others differences. The kids who are going to have an issue with someone else’s hairstyle are probably the children of judgemental parents.

Irresponsible parenting decision? How? It’s fine if you think her hair looks bad but irresponsible is way over the top.Is the child’s health or safety in danger? Or do people actually think that a mohawk is going to give the toddler permanent emotional scars? Because that’s irresponsible parenting decision.if this hair style is not going to have permanent impacts on the child’s health or development,and it won’t, then she’s just giving her child her own sense of aesthetics.I think little girls with very long hair, big bows or hair accessories look silly and corny.I didn’t put any of those on my child’s hair.I thought she looked better.Am I a bad parent for having different taste?
Besides,I think that if a bunch of children make fun of a child to the point of cruelty for something as small as a haircut it says much more about the parents of the mean kids than about the parent of the victimized child.It isn’t true that children are cruel just for the sake of being cruel.If parents actually bother to correct their behaviour and lead by example it wouldn’t be an issue.
I’m not taking this personal.It’s just an example.It is half funny half annoying how a hair cut can become an “irresponsible parentin decision”.I had to comment because of how this is blown out of proportion.

Sorry if the post was so long.You didn’t have to read it.I am not personally offended.My daughter doesn’t have a mohawk and neither do I.I actually don’t like them that much.It does irritate me that hair is called a bad parenting decision.I said everything I had to say in detail,I tend to present my points in detail and I won’t ever comment on this family or the little one’s hair again.

Seeing Angel’s hair referred to as an “irresponsible parental decision” made me laugh. Leaving your six year old at home, unattended, while you get a manicure is an irresponsible parental decision; not a haircut.

angel seems like a very charismatic girl with lots of personality. I bet she asked for this haircut herself. I don’t think she will have any problem on the playground with kids teasing her. If anything, other kids are going to ask their parents for the same cut.
and I don’t think Mel B. is an irresponsible parent… if anything she is raising a free spirit who doesn’t worry so much about what all the ’tisk tiskers’ out there think.
and for those of you who don’t like it… just keep putting bows in your little girls pony tails, naming them ‘Maddyson’ or ‘Emma’ and dressing them out of the gap catalogue. the last thing you want is for them to stick out and be ‘weird.’

It’s her child and she can do what she wants with her hair. she seems like a great mother, this family is always out together and always smiling. And yes, we as parents should teach our children to not make fun of other kids for the way they look, but everytime a picture of this girl gets posted a ton of negative comments come up, so maybe we should all stop judging and our kids will follow!

Mariel, your comment doesn’t make much sense, so I’ll just reply to the last question. If I had a daughter who wanted this haircut (I have two sons) then yes, she could have it. It’s just hair and it grows back. I have bigger battles to fight as a mom and that’s not one I choose to focus on. If that’s the biggest parenting problem youre dealing with then consider yourself lucky.

Angel looks good with that hair.In a community filled with diversity and self-confident children she would fit in immediately.I imagine a lot of cookie-cutter families loosing it because girls are always cute princesses around them but not everyone is that way.
I think eva said it was okay if some thought the hair was bad.The issue for her was the irresponsible parenting label.

They all look lovely. In a couple of years Pheonix will be as tall as her mom. She’s getting so big. And so is Angel. She is such a beautiful girl. She reminds me a little of Eddie’s youngest daughter with Nicole. Anyway, the make a beautiful family.

i have to agree that if kids make fun of her than it is probably because they have judgemental parents and have heard them saying things. take a step back guys and consider whether it really constitutes calling something bad parenting just because someone has made a different choice to you. angel looks happy and healthy and i’m sure if she was really unhappy with it mel would do something about it. she could easily let the side bits grow a bit and then give her a pixie haircut. i really think people should mind their own business.

Actually I WOULD do that to my child’s hair but only if she wanted it. The superficiality of people always perplexes me. With all the wrong people can do to their children a simple fro-hawk is NOTHING. I was once a Big Sister/mentor to a little Cape Verdean girl whose hair was chemically burned off by a relaxer her mother put in to straighten it. She was so unhappy that she wanted to cover her head with a hood or scarf at public events. It was all about what “other people” thought and not about who she really was as a human being and that was such a shame.

Okay, I can see a pixie cut if a girl wants short hair, but to actually shave it into a mohawk? Please. It’s terrible on Rhianna, and it’s no better on Angel. If I had seen this picture not knowing who they were or seeing the headline, I seriously would have thought how cute her son looks dressed as Elmo!

This family always looks so happy and affectionate. That is so refreshing. Angel always seems to be in her Daddy’s arms or holding his hand. I can’t believe that people would rather carry on a haircut than see what I see. A happy famly with children that are loved.

VERY good looking family…Little Angel seems so close with Stephen and it seems he relishes in the father role…wish we could see more close-up photos of the children but nonetheless, GORGEOUS~…People always seem to get off topic on this site…criticizing hair/clothes, comments celebs make that others may take offense to, the list goes on and on…stick to what’s important, the beauty of ALL children and the joy they bring to our lives…couldn’t imagine my life without my children (tearing up just thinking…LOL)…Love this family, they look happy…what more could you ask for~

Sofie, yes – her birth name is Angel Iris Murphy Brown. Angel Iris is Eddie Murhpys biological daughter. I say biological because Eddie gave only his sperm… I think Stephen Belafonte is her “real” father… Because Murphy isn’t present in her life as Belafonte is.

It really shocks me to read some of these comments. I thought that perhaps people in this modern age were more accepting of individuality and personal appearance. This childs haircut isn’t offensive, it isn’t harming anyone, why the uproar? She always seems happy, the family seem well adjusted and bad parenting choices don’t seem to come into it.
It’s really sad that we live in a time when; “Why did she do that to that little girl’s head. She is a girl, why is she wearing a mohawk.” seems to be an accepted viewpoint. Before judging Mel perhaps people should think about their own attitudes.

If my future daughters want to have a mohawk I will certainly let them have it. It grows back!! For goodness sakes. If they want to have pigtails and bows then they should definitely have that. But if they want to be a little bit more edgier then so be it!

I’m really not feeling the ‘mohawk/frohawk’ thing on such a small child. This is where parenting becomes overbearing and egocentric. Mel B is projecting. Too bad she doesn’t project on the side of common sense and good taste. The culture of ‘cool’ takes itself a bit too seriously more often than not.

In response to Sofie’s question, yes, Angel is Eddie Murphy’s daughter; her full name is Angel Iris Murphy Brown. They dated for about 6 months in 2006, and then when Mel got pregnant, bang!—Eddie up and left her, and started to deny paternity. At one point, during an interview Eddie gave to a Dutch tv reporter, he asked Eddie if there was even the slightest chance that Angel was his baby. He replied, and I quote, “I have no idea whose child that is until it comes out and has a blood test. You shouldn’t jump to conclusions, sir.” Mel swore that she wasn’t seeing anyone else when Angel was conceived, but still, Eddie still continued to deny that he was the father, even through the first 2 months after her birth on 3 April 2007 (he also turned 46 the day she was born). So Mel served him with a summons to go to court and an order to take a DNA test. The test was conducted on 11 June 2007, and Eddie went in for it 30 minutes after Mel and Angel did, so as to avoid any drama; the test proved that he is the father, and he’s been supporting her financially ever since.
True, Mel’s hubby Stephen is not her biological father, not her blood, but from day one he has loved and supported and cherished her like she was his own. The whole situation just goes to show that any guy/boy can be a baby-daddy, but only a real MAN can be a father!
BTW, Mel, I freakin’ YOUR bod! Talk about BAB (Body After Baby)! She certainly does not look like she’s had 2 kids; she looks great! And as for all the stupid banter about Angel’s haircut, I personally think it looks great, and it seems to love it too! So everyone please drop it already!!!

I like Phoenix’s costume – nice to see a girl choosing to be something like a court jester as opposed to Barbie/Princess/Witch. I think Mel B and her husband are obviously open to their girls being tomboy-ish or making off beat choices. I agree with a previous poster – I like this style of parenting much better than all the Maddyson’s and Emma’s and their ribbons in ponytails!

sorry, no can do on her hair cut. as a parent, we sometimes have to tell our children “no”. When you turn 16 or 18 or what ever age you want to use, then you can do what you want with yourself. But until then, its our family rules that apply and this kind of haircut is out with both boys and girls. Just the way it works in our household and yes, its been working for the last 19 years that we have had children in our home.

Mimi, I fail to see how Mel is doing anything different from other parents. How is this any different from preppy parents (Ali Landry) dressing their kids in ribbons and bows? Or rocker parents (Gwen Stefani) dressing her kids in little punk clothes?
Your post sounds more like you projecting your ideas of style onto a three year-old. You don’t like it, so how dare Mel do that, right?
And, as for the comment about kids making fun of her. If you’re so worried about that, then lead by example and raise your kids to be less judgmental. After all, we do project our views onto our kids.
Having worked in children’s rights for awhile now, I can safely say that this is nowhere close to irresponsible parenting. Angel is happy, loved, well-nourished, and safe. If a bad haircut is the worst thing Angel has to endure, she is a very lucky little girl.

I think if my future daughter wanted a hairdo like Angel’s, I wouln not shave the side but braid it and have the top out. I think the singer Ashanti did that and it both gives the desired hairdo but without the shaved part. I’ve seen a few variations without the shave sides, and they all looked great.

Lena, I can say from experience that many women and mothers cannot cornrow hair. I made a lot of money in college doing just that for friend…and their children. I can cornrow any texture and length (not bald, of course) but this is not an innate skill!

I personally HATE the mohawk on a little girl, but not my daughter, not my problem. My son had this haircut in pre-school, he is now 8, but I was told he could not wear it up because it was distracting. I was also given loads of dirty looks while waiting in line to see Santa…it is ridiculous that other parents, and some people without children, have such strong opinons and how others choose to dress their children, or the haircuts they have.
Having said that, I have to say Melanie Brown gave birth to that child and supports that child so unless she is beating the child n public, or dressing her inappropriately then people really should keep their mouths zipped. I think it is truly an ugly haircut on a girl, she doesn’t have to have a tiara, or ribbons just because she is a girl but this is a bit much for my taste

@Gabba: When I cut and shaved my hair as a teen my aunt told me it was ugly and I felt so sorry for her. I loved my new shaved hairdo…close to a fro-hawk. I took her opinion with a grain of salt.

As a black woman yes I agree it takes a long time for our hair to grow back especially after its been shaved off but the point is….it does grow back!!!!
If the woman wants to give her child a mohawk, its her child and her right to do so. Lets not start critisizing people on their parenting because we dont like a hair do.
Bad parenting is being out all night at a bar while you kid is at home alone, beating the snot out of your kid, mentally and sexually abusing your child etc.
