Uma Thurman Says Motherhood Is the 'Best Kept Secret'

Peter Kramer/AP

In a new interview with PARADE, actress Uma Thurman reveals that making The Avengers — a film she says “really wasn’t good while it was going on” — sparked her desire to become a mom.

“I came home from making that movie and I started rethinking my life,” Uma, 39, explains. “I said to myself, ‘I’m going to have a baby,’ because I felt like I’d gotten to a spot where I wasn’t sure what I was acting for.” She asks,

“Was I running from myself going from location to location? Was I hurting myself? I wanted something different that would change me.”

Mission accomplished! Uma says that after welcoming Maya Ray, 11, she soon realized that motherhood is “the best-kept secret” around. Uma adds,

“You know how parents rattle on to you about, ‘Oh, you won’t believe your life will never be the same,’ and da, da, da and you think, ‘Why can’t these people just get over it? All they’re doing is yakking on about their kids. It’s such a bore.’ And then you have kids and you just want to do all the same things.”

Uma admits, however, that she “struggled” with guilt as a working mom — especially when Maya and her 7 ½-year-old little brother Levon Roan were babies. “You feel much more conflicted,” Uma notes. “Sort of like, ‘What’s worthy enough to interrupt my kid’s life to take them on the road with me while I do a movie?’”

Now, Uma says, she tries to balance the two and be more forgiving of herself when her best efforts fall short. “I probably overthink things, but I try to do the right thing,” Uma says.

“I just do my best. Any working mother will tell you it’s the same. I think every working mom is kind of a superhero. I think we all are.”

Maya and Levon are Uma’s children with ex-husband Ethan Hawke.

Matilda, who turns 4 tomorrow, has become aware of the attention photographers pay to the pair, which has increased since the death of dad Heath Ledger, Michelle recently explained to Vogue.

“[I tell her,] ‘It’s because people really loved your daddy that they want to take your picture, to know you’re all right.’”

Motherhood Is Mary-Louise Parker's Favorite Role

Neilson Barnard/Getty

Nothing beats the home life for Mary-Louise Parker.

“Becoming a mom is the best thing that’s happened to me,” the Weeds star, 45, told PEOPLE at the 5th Annual Worldwide Orphans benefit gala in New York City Monday. “I’ll be the first to admit that it can be very hard to raise two kids, but I absolutely love it. I can’t imagine what my life would be without my children.”

Mary-Louise, already mom to William Atticus, 5 ½, her son with former boyfriend Billy Crudup, adopted Caroline Aberash, now 3, from Ethiopia in August 2007. She says it was the “best decision I’ve ever made.”

“She says, ‘I love you, Mommy’ and asks, ‘Do you love me so much?,’” Mary-Louise says with joy. “She has a little bit of a speech delay; Amharic was her first language she heard. But she’s really indomitable. She’s really strong and she’s like a little warrior. She’s really amazing.”

And she’s a great fit with her big brother.

“They both want to put on shows all the time with top hats,” Mary-Louise shares. “It’s very vaudeville. They are really sweet together and sometimes they hurt each other, but they are just like me and my brother.”

These days Mary-Louise can share the joys of motherhood with her musician boyfriend Charlie Mars, 35, whom she calls a “great guy.” “He’s kind and very sweet,” the actress says.

Now that Mary-Louise has two kids in her life, what has she learned about herself? Patience!

“They really put you in touch on how little you know and how little you are capable of and much you are capable of,” she notes. “They are very humbling, children. I am more patient now. I’ve become much more patient.”
