Laura Leighton: Daughters Find Her Melrose Place Role 'Awkward'

Debra L. Rothenberg/Startraks

Much has changed for Melrose Place star Laura Leighton between the show’s original run and its latest incarnation.

First and foremost? The four children she shares with Desperate Housewives’ (and Melrose alum) Doug SavantArianna, 17, Madeleine, 16, Jack, turning 9 this week and Lucy, 4. That the couple’s two eldest daughters are teenagers has introduced a certain “weirdness” at home, Laura recently revealed on The Bonnie Hunt Show.

“In my twenties, I didn’t have any kids and didn’t have any reason to think about it but now…they’re sort of the right age to be interested in watching the show,” Laura explains. “It’s like, ‘Oh God, my mom’s on this show.’” As for their reaction? Laura jokes,

“Their phrase — to quote them — is ‘Ah…ew…awkward.”

Laura, 41, had to endure an equally awkward moment recently with Jack, when he read a Melrose Place billboard with the slogan “Tuesday’s are a b-tch.” Conceding that “it was a hard one to explain,” Laura says she had “not ever thought about it” before.

“I told him that it used to be that on Mondays, at the start of a week sometimes people have a hard time going back to work. I skipped the double entendre. He said, ‘Oh I get it, it means it’s a hard time.’ I said, ‘Yeah!’”

Although the couple — married since 1998 — have made a solid living as actors Laura hopes her own children pursue a different career. “I would be completely horrified,” she adds.

“I think about it all the time, and we have done nothing but discourage our children from the very beginning. [We tell them] you will not go into this business! And so far they’re not interested (knocks on wood) so we are hoping that remains the case.”

Arianna and Madeleine are Doug’s daughters with ex-wife Dawn Savant.

Eddie Cibrian Says Sons Resemble Their Dad

Sara De Boer/Retna

During a recent visit to Live with Regis and Kelly, father-of-two Eddie Cibrian touched on his recently troubled marriage to Brandi Glanville. “It’s tough when something private gets played out publicly,” he concedes. “There’s a part of my life that’s fantastic and a part of my life that’s very difficult…You just try to get by.”

Helping him do just that are the estranged couple’s sons Mason Edward, 6, and Jake Austin, 2 ½, both of whom resemble the 36-year-old CSI: Miami actor. “Especially my older one,” Eddie boasts. “He looks just like me.”

As for Jake, a rapidly expanding vocabulary has been both a blessing and a curse. “He’s talking up a storm, to my detriment,” Eddie jokes. “Two-year-olds….they don’t know what they’re saying.” Case in point? Father and son recently visited a Halloween store, where Jake saw a witch doll which talked spontaneously as the twosome passed by.

“He goes, ‘Daddy, what is that?’ And I go, ‘That’s a witch,’” Eddie recalls. “He goes, ‘Oooh, yeah. A scary witch!’” Thinking that the moment had come and gone, Eddie and Jake headed to a car show where they encountered two men talking — one of whom was sporting a long beard.

“As we’re passing by, he goes ‘Daddy! A scary witch!’ I said, ‘No, no, no, Jake, that’s not a witch.’ He says, ‘Yes, a scary witch!’ I said ‘Sorry, sir.’ But he did look like a witch a little bit.”

With their costumes in hand, the boys are looking forward to Halloween. “It’s a whole big ‘to do’ in our neighborhood,” Eddie shares. “People do up their houses and everything.” When the Hollywood hills prove too tough for tiny feet to tackle, there are other options. “Only in L.A. do you get a golf cart for when the kids get tired,” Eddie notes. “You pop them in the golf cart and you hit up all the homes in the neighborhood…they love it.”

Caught Caring: Halle Berry and GEMS

Celebrity Baby Blog – Caught Caring

As a survivor of emotional and physical abuse, Halle Berry knows how it feels to be a victim. She also knows how it feels to overcome the abuse, and how to go on to achieve great personal and professional success. In a heartfelt letter written on behalf of Girls Educational & Mentoring Services (GEMS), the Academy Award-winning actress and mom-of-one announces her partnership with The Council of Daughters. A core part of GEMS’ Girls Are Not for Sale Campaign, the Council of Daughters is a new national network aimed at drawing attention to the plight of girls who have been trafficked.

In her letter, Halle calls victimized girls everywhere “her daughter,” and wonders aloud what could be “if millions of women band together to fight for the needs of girls at the national and local level.”

“Together, we can ensure that girls are educated and empowered to know their self-worth and beauty. We can demand that service providers, doctors, educators and police officers are informed and prepared to respond to the needs of children who have been victimized. We can ensure that comprehensive recovery services are available in all 50 states. We can help young survivors rise to the forefront of a nation-wide movement to end child sex trafficking in America. We can build a nation where girls are celebrated, not sold.”

The Department of Justice estimates the most frequent age of entry into the commercial sex industry in the United States is 12-14 years old, and that 325,000 children in the United States are subject to sexual exploitation each year.

The problem is spotlighted in the new Showtime documentary Very Young Girls, available online and through Netflix; On October 17, you can take the One2One challenge by hosting a viewing party of the documentary, and help spread the word. Halle adds,

“Imagine the enormous change that is possible if we each commit to a simple pledge: Every girl is my daughter and I will do whatever I can, whenever I can, to protect the girls I know and the girls I may never meet.”
