Leslie Mann on the 'Insanity' of Working Motherhood

Kevin Winter/Getty

You won’t find Leslie Mann sugarcoating the struggle to balance work and family. In a new interview with the Los Angeles Times, the 37-year-old actress paints a vivid scene that working moms everywhere can identify with.

“I was sitting in the kitchen tonight, trying to get ready for this, and my kids were screaming and going crazy,” she shares. “Every time I try to do two things — work and be a mother — it’s insane.” Leslie goes on to admit,

“I don’t deal with it well. I don’t think anybody can. It’s impossible to do, although I’m forever trying.”

In some areas she is succeeding — the girls “are really smart,” Leslie says — and in others, not so much! “My kids have a lot of cavities, I found out today, which means I’m a bad mother,” she jokes.

Although Iris, 7, and Maude, 11, have a few movie credits to their name there are no plans for them to pursue show business as a career, Leslie says, adding that neither aspires to be the next Miley Cyrus.

“Maude…[is] really into school and she doesn’t seem to care too much what Miley Cyrus does at all. She’s really grounded.”

Iris and Maude are Leslie’s daughters with husband Judd Apatow.

Kristi Yamaguchi on Her 'Greatest Fear' As a Mom

Byron Purvis/AdMedia

Child stars will often falter at some point, but don’t count Olympic gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi among them. Not only did she follow up an unblemished competitive figure skating career with ten years of Stars On Ice, she went on to marry professional hockey player Bret Hedican; Together, the couple have two children: Keara Kiyomi, 6, and Emma Yoshiko, 3 ½.

Although she accomplished so much so quickly, the 38-year-old former Dancing With the Stars champ harbors no regrets about the timing.

“I’m glad I had a really busy career early on before I had children so that now I can step back and focus more on parenting and spending time with them,” Kristi tells Babble. “My mom was a stay-at-home mom and was there for us all the time.”

“That’s what I would love to try to do with my kids. My greatest fear is not being there for them as much as they need us or not having that close relationship as they get older.”

It’s clear that Kristi’s parents have everything to do with the kind of parent she, herself, has turned out to be. Despite their busy schedules, the Yamaguchis made a point of having dinner together each night at six o’clock, and the practice gave Kristi and her siblings “a sense of stability.” It should come as no surprise, then, that Kristi and Bret try to keep a similar schedule with Keara and Emma.

“With my traveling, it’s not every day,” she concedes. “But if we’re all home we all eat together. It’s a good tradition. I think it helps you all stay connected.”

Click below to learn what aspect of parenting makes Kristi feel like “a fish out of water.”

Step 2 LifeStyle Gourmet Café Kitchen: For Multiple Cooks in the Kitchen

Step 2 LifeStyle Gourmet Café Kitchen

One of the highlights of the Step 2 LifeStyle Gourmet Café Kitchen ($100) is the dual-sided design that gives my twins plenty of space to interact. Sure they can both stand on one side of the kitchen, playing with the sink, stove or appliances. But the open window and counter space on the opposite side makes it ideal for shared play.

Putting it together wasn’t difficult, especially once we got out the drill to burrow the screws through the plastic. And when the stickers were in place — which gives it a French country/modern look — my little ones were ready to get cooking.

The kitchen includes two battery operated sound features: a burner that has boiling and frying sounds and a cute phone. However, without batteries, it was just as fun for my kids. The deep sink has a swiveling faucet and there’s storage space for all of the accessories.

It also comes with two place settings of bowls, plates, cups and flatware, three storage baskets, lidded pots and pans, spices, a pepper grounder, food, etc. Plus, the durable plastic is easy to keep clean and built to go the distance.

– Sarah, mom to twins Lily and Logan, 19 months, works part-time and obsesses over things that are perfect for two while simultaneously making her life a little easier

Clive Owen Says Daughters Fear His Disappearing Act

Jon Furniss/WireImage

Taking time off between acting roles has become increasingly important to Clive Owen as his daughters Hannah, 12, and Eve, 10, have gotten older. Noting that his time on set is often “for very solid points of time,” the 47-year-old Closer star is cognizant of how his absence is being interpreted by the girls.

“No matter how much time I spend at home, there’s always this thing underneath: that there’s a possibility I might disappear again and do a movie. Whereas most fathers, even if they’re not around that much, there’s a regular routine.”

In his new film The Boys Are Back, Clive portrays a widower raising two young sons by himself. Although he plays a parent in the film, his own parenting style is not necessarily on display! “No, I’m not at all as crazy and loose as that,” he  explains. “But I think there is an element of that to most fathers.” Mothers are “more maternal and protective” while dads are “a bit looser,” Clive points out, adding that the latter is not necessarily a bad thing! He elaborates,

“I’d say we sometimes are too structured in the way that we do things and that it is important to keep loose and go with the flow a bit with children.”

Hannah and Eve are Clive’s children with wife Sarah-Jane Fenton. The Boys Are Back is in theaters now.
