Lindsay Davenport: Husband's Help Makes Her 'The Luckiest Girl'

Picture Media/INF

Although she is only 3 ½-months-old, Lauren Andrus Leach already has her future mapped out if mom Lindsay Davenport has a say in the matter! “[We're hoping Lauren is] a little bit of a tomboy, but we’ll see,” the former World No. 1 tennis player tells Pregnancy in their October issue.

“Sports is our way of life. It’ll have to be like that for our kids.”

Fortunately, Lauren already has a leg up on her older brother Jagger Jonathan, 2. “My son Jagger was born at only 36 weeks; Lauren was born at 39 weeks,” Lindsay notes, explaining that the three additional weeks in the womb were worth it. “She was obviously full-term and the difference in how big she is, how much better her ability to suck is, and her head control is — it’s truly remarkable.”

For Lindsay, the road to recovery after giving birth to her second child has been far harder than imagined; She gained 30 lbs. with her son and found herself putting on 20 more during her subsequent pregnancy, for a total weight gain of 50 lbs. “My hips got bigger and my stomach got bigger sooner,” she recalls.

The gradual return to tennis has far less to do with her physical condition, however, and is based more on her dedication to her children. “I came back and started playing tournaments 10 weeks after [Jagger's birth]. That said, I did start hitting a few days ago, but it’s about much more now: I’m 33, I’ve had two kids, it’s definitely not as easy to jump right back into it.”

A true working mom, Lindsay has her days scheduled down to the minute in order to maximize her time with her kids. “If you’re practicing for 90 minutes, you need to bust your butt for 90 minutes to get it all in, so you can have that hour lunch with your child,” she advises.

And when the going gets tough and 24 hours in a day aren’t enough, Lindsay seeks advice from friend Gwen Stefani.

“I have an enormous amount of respect for her and Gavin [Rossdale]: when they’re with their kids, how they go about their jobs, how they feel about parenthood and working,” she explains.

“[Gwen's] job is crazier than tennis and, for her, there’s no chance she’s going to leave her children at home and there’s no chance she’s not going to spend time with them during the day, even if it means getting four hours of sleep.”

While the No Doubt frontwoman may serve as an inspiration, it is none other than Lindsay’s husband Jon Leach — whom the tennis star calls the true “parent” of the household — who leaves her amazed. “Truly, I’m the luckiest girl: He’s home by 4:00 p.m. and when he walks through the door, he does everything with my son — and I don’t exaggerate,” she raves.

“Any time in the middle of the night, if there’s a cry, he’s always the first one up. I kind of pretend I don’t hear it a lot of the time.”

Pete Wentz Eventually Wants 'A Soccer Team'

INF

Pete Wentz loves being a dad to his 10-month-old son Bronx Mowgli, but his plans of fathering a soccer team will have to wait.

“Everything is awesome about being a dad,” Pete, 30, tells PEOPLE at the Yahoo! Yodel Studio in New York City’s Times Square on Tuesday. “Eventually we want to be able to have a soccer team.”

He adds that he and Ashlee Simpson-Wentz, 25, just have to “schedule and time things right … Ashlee is really focused on Melrose Place right now and I’m figuring what I’m doing next year.”

In the mean time, the Fall Out Boy bassist is enjoying spending time with Bronx. “I think for the first nine months Mom is so essential,” Pete says. “When they start hanging out with Dad more you’re like, ‘Wow I feel like a dad.’ You go to music class and do fun stuff together, it’s cool.”

Being a father has even allowed the singer to have more appreciation for his own father. “It makes me realize all of the little things that my dad sacrificed when he had me,” Pete says. “It’s sad it took 30 years but I totally realize it now.”

Alison Sweeney Tests Old Wives' Tale on Megan

Move over Angel, Cruz and Kingston, there’s a new mohawk in town! Or — at least — there was ever so briefly for 9-month-old Megan Hope, daughter of Biggest Loser host Alison Sweeney. During a Wednesday visit to The Ellen DeGeneres Show, the 33-year-old actress flashed a photograph of her mohawked baby girl and said that she was acting on the advice of her hairdresser.

“In Latin American cultures they have a thing where they shave babies heads because when their hair’s so fine, it grows back thicker,” Alison explained. “It’s an old wives’ tale.”

After having “a glass of champagne or two” with her own mom, Alison said the duo decided to take action. “We shaved her head,” Alison laughed before adding,

“So of course if you’re going to do it, you have to do the mohawk first! But it’s grown back thicker! It really has! It’s cute and thick and blonde. It’s a bit of a Chia Pet sort of thing.”

In addition to Megan, Alison is mom to 4 ½-year-old Benjamin Edward with husband David Sanov.

Caught Caring: Ben Stiller and Save the Children

Celebrity Baby Blog – Caught Caring

For most newborn babies the world is full of limitless possibilities; For millions of children in conflict countries, however, their future at birth appears bleak indeed. There are life-threatening illnesses and diseases to overcome, poverty to contend with, and a general lack of educational opportunities.

With regard to the latter, the international non-profit organization Save the Children in 2005 launched Rewrite the Future which seeks to provide supplies, books and uniforms to those who need it most.

Their efforts are succeeding. Rewrite the Future has thus far assisted ten million children in receiving a better education and has enrolled 1 million children into school — the equivalent of opening two schools every day.

Celebrity dad Ben Stiller has signed on to the cause, and recently made his first trip to Africa to witness firsthand how Rewrite the Future is working.

In Karamoja, Uganda Ben visited several different projects funded by the charity and spent time with the schoolchildren who have benefited as a result.

“[The] aim is to integrate [an educational framework] into the fabric of what’s going on there, from the inside out…it’s about helping people to help themselves,” he explains. “It’s different from delivering a shipment of grain. It’s really about connecting with people.” He adds,

“As a person, and seeing what’s going on in the world, there’s only so much you can take before you go ‘I’ve just got to try to do something,’ whether it seems cynical or not.”

Another way Ben is trying to help is with Help Me Spread Goodness. The comedy, which Ben is directing, tells the tale of a Nigerian email scam victim who travels to Africa to track down the man who scammed him and who along the way learns about the struggles of those who live there.

Produced by Participant Media — a studio which requires its films to carry a message of social change and awareness — Help Me Spread Goodness is due in theaters in 2011.

The need for greater educational opportunities is particularly acute in conflict countries like Haiti, which Ben has also visited, and the Middle East. To that end, Save the Children has enabled over 60,000 children in Afghanistan to go school for the first time — many of them girls. Noting that education can contribute to economic growth and stability, Save the Children says that every additional year of formal schooling reduces the chance of males becoming involved in conflict by 20%.

“With education, children have the opportunity to break the cycle of war and poverty.”

Although global aid to educational initiatives is on the rise, there is much work yet to be done. Over half of the 75 million children out of school — 40 million — still live in countries affected by conflict, Save the Children estimates. To find out how you can help, click here.

Ben and wife Christine Taylor are parents to Ella Olivia, 7 ½, and Quinlin Dempsey, 4.

Warm Up Your Feet (Hands and Head) in SmartWool This Winter!

SmartWool

When our furnace stopped working on a colder than normal autumn day, my son immediately put on his beloved pair of SmartWool socks. They’re so warm, I threw on mine too!

SmartWool products are made from 100% Merino wool fibers that are specially designed to be itch-free. Which is perfect for finicky kids — like my 4-year-old son — who don’t like itchy clothes.

These socks ($12) are so soft — they cushion your feet in the most delightful way. Plus they’re machine washable and dry-able! They are, without a doubt, my family’s fave socks to wear.

SmartWool also makes other cozy accessories — hats, scarves, gloves and more for little ones and grownups alike — so this winter you have no excuse for cold toes, fingers or ears!
