Matt Damon on Setting a Charitable Example for Daughters

Alpha/Landov

For Matt Damon, philanthropy is a way of life — and it’s the only life he’s ever known. The 39-year-old actor credits mom Nancy for instilling in him at an early age the importance of giving back.

“When I was a boy, my mom had a magnet on the refrigerator with a little picture of Gandhi along with a quote from him. It said: “No matter how insignificant what you do may seem, it is important that you do it,’ Matt recalls in a new interview with PARADE. “As a child, I was raised to believe that, and to this day I do my best to live it.”

He’s also doing his best to pass that mindset on to daughters Alexia, 11, Isabella, 3, and Gia Zavala, 13 ½ months. “I can’t think of any more important value to instill in our children than the desire to help others,” he explains.

“I feel strongly about setting an example for them. Real problems can be solved by the next generation if we instill in them the right values. I’m not a politician, and I don’t want to tell anybody how to live. But I must say, all these years later, I still think Gandhi had the right idea: No matter how small the contribution we make may seem, it’s crucial that we all do our part.”

While the girls are still young, Matt says that they’ve been staying behind with mom Luciana during his visits abroad. Someday, however, he says he’s looking forward to having their company as he comes face-to-face with those he’s working to help with Water.org and the ONE campaign. “It’s really powerful when you get to meet the people and shake their hands and listen to their stories,” he says.

“We don’t like to be separated, but we both feel it’s so important to learn about these things. There’s so much I don’t know. In the future, I know these trips are something we’ll do as a family.”

Anka by Svan Mini Furniture: Stylishly Built for a Lifetime of Play

Svan

It’s hard to find furniture or toys for that matter that will stand the test of time. But Anka by Svan’s Mini Furniture ($199.95-$249.95) is the real deal. Available in three glossy finishes (natural, honey or espresso), the durable Scandinavian set includes a round table, three chairs and a stool.

Easy to clean, you can wipe away anything from washable marker and crayon marks to juice and food, which makes it perfect for both tea parties and art time. The stool is super sturdy so parents can sit comfortably and play along.

Although recommended for ages 2 to 7, my very tall 19-month-old twins enjoyed the set a great deal. It’s a great investment for parents who want a toy that will last.

Exclusive for CBB Readers: Use code QUACK for 10% off the Anka by Svan Mini Furniture at AnkaBabyStore.com.

Courteney Cox-Arquette Embraces Being 'Everyone's Mom'

Bruce Glikas/FilmMagic

The maternal instinct is something Courteney Cox-Arquette says she had long before welcoming daughter Coco Riley, 5. In a new interview with USA Today, the 45-year-old actress says proclaims she is “everyone’s mom,” and proud of it!

“I’m the one that you come to when you have a problem. I love it, and I’m really good at it.”

Courteney’s Cougar Town costar Josh Hopkins concurs. “She has a huge matriarchal streak to her personality,” he notes. “We’re only on Episode 8, and I go to her when I need advice on something.”

If Courteney herself needs help with anything, it would be with finding enough hours in the day to juggle the constant demands for her time. Coco recently started kindergarten and has only been picked up from school once by mom. “This is the most taxing job I’ve had,” she admits.

“This time is the most challenging. Coco goes to school for seven or eight hours a day, and we have to schedule with the nanny. We’re making it work somehow.”

Coco is Courteney’s daughter with husband David Arquette. Cougar Town airs Wednesdays at 9:30 p.m. on ABC.

Jasper Hearts Wren: Fun With Felt

Jasper Hearts Wren

What happens when a pair of self-taught “creative types” hole up in a house in Oakland with a pile of felt and a dream? Modern playclothes magic, in the form of Jasper Hearts Wren.

We’re loving the funky, fresh designs Of owners (and moms) Heather Jennings and Lisa Schwartz. They put washable felt cut-outs made from 100% post consumer recycled plastic bottles on everything from dresses to hoodies to tote bags. Their super cute rocket ships, robots, popsicles and more are all hand-stitched on sweatshop-free cotton. And if appliques aren’t your thing, they also offer a smaller collection of printed onesies.

The details are darling, including big chunky buttons that serve as birdie eyes. Hoodies range in size from 2T-6T, dresses from 6-12 months to 2T-3T and onesies from 3-6 months to 6T. My absolute favorite item in the line — an apron dress — is one-size fits all. Once it becomes too short, just let your little one wear it as a tunic with jeans and a t-shirt.

Prices, which range from $30 to $65, are a bit pricey, but for hand-stitched, eco-friendly, one-of-a-kind apparel it’s worth the price. Besides, where else can you find a corn dog onesie?

Hank Azaria Dishes on a 'Very Mellow' Hal

Joshua Roberts/Reuters/Landov

Filming Love and Other Drugs in Pittsburgh is a family affair for newfound family man Hank Azaria. The 45-year-old actor’s girlfriend Katie Wright and the couple’s son Hal, 4 months, have joined him on location — but they’ve proven to be a bit of a distraction!

Hank tells the Jacksonville Observer,

“To be honest, I’m pretty happy to hang around and just stare at the baby for a while.”

Hal’s premature delivery is a distant memory now, and baby boy continues to thrive. “He’s fine — a big 10-pound baby now,” Hank proudly reports before adding,

“He’s very calm, very easily soothed, very mellow so far. It is fun to have the little guy around. He’s just starting to recognize us.”

Love and Other Drugs is expected in theaters in 2010.

Russell Crowe Says Tennyson May Follow In His Footsteps

Scope Features/Pacific Coast News

Expanding his list of professional accomplishments, Russell Crowe can now add producer to his repertoire — the actor is currently starring in and co-producing his latest film, Robin Hood. That said, despite his hectic shooting schedule, he tells Entertainment Tonight that his two children — sons Charles Spencer, 5 ½, and Tennyson Spencer, 3 — are never far from his mind.

“They haven’t visited the set a lot because there’s just a lot of moving parts so it can be a little dangerous,” he says, before adding that both boys were happy to be on set for the day while their mom Danielle Spencer spent time “doing some of her music stuff.”

Time on his father’s set is only further encouraging Tennyson’s acting bug! “He’s not a Hollywood kid by any means, but he’s an actor, totally,” raves Russell. And while the doting dad would prefer his children steer clear of the industry, he admits that may be easier said than done when it comes to his younger son.

“If it’s in their blood, fine, but I don’t want to force them into it. I don’t want to put them in a situation where they feel they got to do that because that’s how they’re going to get daddy’s approval,” he explains.

“But Tenny just sort of has the natural flash in his eyes.”
