Chad Lowe Says Daughter Mabel Is 'Beloved'

Jordan Strauss/WireImage

There hasn’t been a girl born to Rob and Chad Lowe’s family in almost four generations, but that all changed with the birth of Chad’s 5-month-old daughter Mabel in May.

“You can imagine the position she’s in,” Chad told PEOPLE at Saturday’s Children’s Institute Hosts Poker for a Cause in Commerce, Calif. “She is the only girl. It is the first Lowe girl born in 72 years. She’s got a lot of doting uncles and cousins. She is beloved.”

As for older brother Rob as an uncle? “He’s great. The cousins are great, his boys [John, 13, and Matthew, 16],” Chad adds.

As a first-time dad, Chad, an Emmy winner for the show Life Goes On, enjoys coparenting with his fiancée Kim Painter, a film producer.

“I get up for feedings and try to experience a little bit of what mommies have to go through, which is the sleepless nights,” he notes. “It is the hardest job you will ever love. I love it more than anything.”

Chad, who is directing episodes of Brothers & Sisters and Bones this year, in addition to guest-starring on The Ghost Whisperer, gives kudos to Mabel’s mom.

“Kim is extraordinary with the baby. I can’t believe my good fortune to have a partner that is as committed, loving, tolerant and present as she is. She is the best mom I could ever imagine.”

Of his own take on parenthood, Chad, 41, says, “As any parent can say, it just changes your life. It changes your perspective. It has been the greatest gift and joy I could ever possibly imagine.”

Gavin Lends Gwen a Helping Hand

Broadimage

Gavin Rossdale takes son Zuma Nesta Rock, 14 months, off Gwen Stefani‘s hands while out shopping at a homegoods store in Culver City, Calif. on Saturday.

It was a busy day for the family — they started off at Lakeshore Learning Materials, where they chose a gift for a birthday party later in the day.

Leaving Kingston James McGregor, 3, to play at the store with his nanny, Gwen, Gavin and Zuma ran a quick errand (at left) before returning to pick the pair up.

Then it was on to the birthday party before closing out the day with dinner at Porta Via.

Naomi Watts Says Sons Are 'Endlessly Fascinating'

Jackson Lee/Splash News Online

Likening motherhood to “science fiction,” actress Naomi Watts says she continues to marvel at sons Alexander ‘Sasha’ Pete, 2, and Samuel Kai, 10 months  – and how they came to be.

“I still can’t believe it when I look at my children that they came from one little moment and they’re people,” she admits. “They’re babies and people and they learn and figure out all these things and you go, ‘God, I can’t believe it.’”

To hear the 41-year-old Funny Games star tell it, however, this time is just the quiet before the storm! She jokes,

“They’re so surprising and endlessly fascinating and soon they’re going to have problems. Now they’re just innocent little beings, learning and growing, but soon they’ll be all f–ked up.”

In her new film Mother and Child, Naomi portrays a lawyer who delays starting a family in order to focus on her career. “I can relate to that,” Naomi says. “I think that there have been times, though certainly not lately, as I’ve slowed down a lot.”

Fiancé Liev Schreiber deserves much of the credit for that, Naomi says.

“At the beginning, when things were taking off for me in America, I was on the treadmill and I didn’t want to have a relationship particularly,” she explains. “I wanted to travel a lot. I come from a background, that was not a troubled childhood or anything, but there has been some sadness, perhaps that I didn’t want to face and work seemed like a good option.”

“But now I’ve changed a lot. I’ve slowed down and have a family. When I met Liev things changed.”

Mother and Child debuted at the Toronto Film Festival last month.

Splash News Online

It’s a family field trip for rocker Pete Wentz, who accompanied wife Ashlee Simpson-Wentz and 11-month-old son Bronx Mowgli on a shopping trip in Hollywood on Saturday.

“I think for the first nine months Mom is so essential,” Pete said last week. “When they start hanging out with Dad more you’re like, ‘Wow I feel like a dad.’ You go to music class and do fun stuff together, it’s cool.”

Jason Bateman Relies On ‘Rolling Ambien’ For Francesca

Antonie Brzostoski/INF

Daddy duty can be tough! Barely able to keep his eyes open during a recent visit to The Ellen DeGeneres Show, a sleep-deprived Jason Bateman admitted that the morning routine with daughter Francesca Nora, 3 this month, has been anything but mundane. “My daughter didn’t have a great night sleep last night — she’s got a phlegmy thing that kept her up — so I’m a little bit tired,” he began.

After dropping off baby girl at preschool, Jason headed back home to squeeze in some much-needed exercise, only to hear his cell phone chirp seconds before warming up.

“I get a call from the headmistress [and] she doesn’t even announce herself, she says, ‘Your daughter has a 103 degree temperature,” he shares. “And I mean, I didn’t know this, I swear! Francesca must have taken a turn for the worse somewhere in the morning.”

The events quickly went from bad to worse when the Extract star arrived at the school to pick up his little girl!

“So I had to go back there. I pick her up, I get a hairy eyeball from everybody in the school like that I’m either dropping my kid off so they deal with her sickness or that I’m trying to infect the entire student body, both of which may have been true, but I won’t admit to any of it.”

As the father-daughter pair made their way to the car, Jason found himself contemplating how to soothe Frannie, who was crying and uncomfortable. His answer? The reliable “rolling Ambien,” better known as the family car! “She’s starting to doze off a little bit and I figure, that’s great, because maybe she’ll get better when she sleeps,” he notes.

Uma Thurman Calls Moms 'Unsung Heroes'

Peter Kramer/AP

Making the film Motherhood was a badge of honor for mom-of-two Uma Thurman. In a new interview, the 39-year-old actress notes that motherhood “is a thing that can be terribly underappreciated,” but at the same time, “people are very willing to heap criticism on mothers.” She adds,

“You don’t hear that much about the successes of mothers. Mothers are unsung heroes, and I do think there is a very beautiful thing in making a movie about a mother.”

Her character in the film is a freelance writer with one day to write a 500 word essay on motherhood, but Uma needs far less for her own definition: “Growing up.” She goes on to note that it’s a concept which has come full circle with Maya Ray, 11, and Levon Roan, 7 ½.

“I started growing up, or at least realized how far I had to go, becoming a mother. And then there’s the beauty of watching them grow up.”

Maya and Levon are Uma’s children with ex-husband Ethan Hawke. Motherhood is in select cities on October 23rd.
