Kelly Rutherford Says Single Mother Status Motivates Her to Work

Astrid Stawiarz/WireImage

When Kelly Rutherford stepped into the role of Lily on the hit show Gossip Girl, the mother-of-two had no problem connecting with her character on a deeper level. For the actress, their experiences of motherhood provided a foundation for which Kelly was easily able to build on.

“There are certain universal things about mothers,” she tells the Los Angeles Times.

“I like that we show that mothers aren’t always perfect. It’s okay to say, ‘I’m sorry, I didn’t handle that the best way possible.’”

Feeling her way through unforeseen circumstances has become the norm for Kelly, with her divorce from Daniel Giersch undoubtedly taking its toll. That said, however, the 40-year-old insists her priorities remain her kids — Hermés Gustaf Daniel, 3, and Helena Grace, 4 months — and, in turn, her dedication to her career.

“I’m a single mother with no child support. I have to work,” she notes.

Aside from the necessity to continue on with her career, Kelly feels it is important to teach her children the responsibilities of a working mother.

“I also happen to love what I do and think it’s a good example for kids to see their mother working. My son always says to me, ‘Mommy, why do you have to go to work?’ and I tell him, ‘I have to be able to buy the toys.’ He totally gets it.”

Make-A-Wish Foundation and pediped Launch 'Stars for a Wish' Auction

Make-A-Wish

More than 60 celebrity parents have signed on to the Stars for a Wish initiative — a joint effort by pediped and the Make-A-Wish Foundation — by signing baby shoes for auction. Beginning today, you can bid on pedipeds autographed by familiar Celebrity Baby Blog faces like Courteney Cox-Arquette, Halle Berry, Tiger Woods and Jessica Alba.

Hurry up and place your bid. Each winner will receive their shoes in their choice of a cherry-finished shadow box or a clear acrylic box complete with an engraved plaque.

Organizers have an ambitious goal of raising $25,000 overall. Each and every dollar will go directly to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, which helps grant the wishes of children facing life-threatening medical conditions.

Angela Edgeworth, president and co-founder of pediped, says that the response from celebrities was “overwhelming.” She notes,

“Now it’s all up to the public to bid high for these shoes so they not only receive a beautifully presented keepsake from their favorite celebrity, but more importantly, so they will be helping children.”

The auction runs until Nov. 5.

Chris O'Donnell and LL Cool J Dish on (Big) Family Life

Stephen Shugerman/Getty

With nine children between them, Chris O’Donnell and LL Cool J have no shortage of stories to swap on the set of NCIS: Los Angeles, and the costars’ camaraderie was apparent during a recent visit to On-Air with Ryan Seacrest.

“I always said I wanted five when I was younger,” Chris — dad to Lily Anne, 10, Christopher ‘Chip’ Eugene, 9, Charles McHugh, 6, Finley, 3 ½, and Maeve Frances, 22 months — explains. “I didn’t know what the hell I was talking about.”

“Once you have a couple and you realize how hard it is…We were done at four and the fifth one was the only one we were surprised about.”

His revelation prompted LL — himself dad to Najee, 19, Italia, 18, Samaria, 14, and Nina, 9 — to quip,

“I always said I wanted ten [children], and then I got 60% smarter.”

Although the duo are clearly enjoying their roles on the show, the same cannot necessarily be said for Chris’ wife Caroline Fentress and Lily — whom the 39-year-old actor jokingly called “superfans.” For the series’ premiere, Chris said he expected the couple would host friends but Caroline had other plans.

“She said, ‘Uh, I’m taking Lily to American Idol,’” he recalled with a laugh. “It was literally the first night we were on, and my wife and my oldest child [did] not stay home and watch the show.”
