I think its fabulous that she’s encouraging her little ones to express themselves at such a young age! Have fun with it now before you’re running around in circles trying to get them to Kindergarten on time!

My twins are identical boys and although they might not be as fun to “dress up” as the girls, but we still enjoy mixing an matching up their clothes. We usually opt for matching shirts in different colors. One of my twins loves red and the other one loves orange so we have lots of matching shirts in those colors!!!

Erika- I agree! As long the outfit is weather approprite, and you’re not going to church, a wedding, or some other event where more formal attire is required, what’s the harm in letting kids decide what they want to wear?

I have no choice, I have to let my daughter choose her clothes or else it would be a battle every time she got dressed. I just give her several options, and sometimes if she’ll have none of the options I’ll let her have at it as long as its not completely inappropriate. I mean part of the fun of being a kid is playing dress up! She has gone out in a tutu or her hula skirt over her clothes.

I so laughed at this story! I remember 27 years ago (gulp!) when my niece was 2 and my sister allowed her to dress herself….and she would proudly come down the stairs in polka dotted socks, bright pink cords, a completely mismatched sweater – and usually with a hat on. Every day I waited every day to see what she’d wear because it was such a highlight to my day and the typical corporate garb I was dressed in. Kudos to Ms Cross for allowing them, with what appears the same panache as my sister, to allow her children to just be.

They chose what they have in their closets/drawers, which I’m sure they didn’t pick out to buy…. Marcia should take the little ladies shopping and THEN see if they still gravitate towards the “boring.” Not that it really matters at 2 and a half!

Cute story. I am a boring dresser myself so this made me laugh. My boys, 4 1/2 and 7 1/2, pick their own clothes out. My older one has always been pretty good at matching but my younger one goes mostly on which pair of pants he he likes that day and which shirt. Weather they match or not. My feeling is if they get themselves dressed I don’t care. They do have to wear weather appropriate clothes but other than that whatever goes. Good for Marcia!
