Tammy, I don’t know about the US, but I have worked in Kindergarten in one country and have friends who have worked and/or had their chilkdren in Kindergarten in other contries, and the children usually either have a nap or quiet time in the middle of the day (its usually a gradual change so that the children who need to nap get to nap and once they stop napping they have quiet time instead).

Wow, I can’t believe how long these kids are going to kindergarten for? I’m a teacher myself, and believe that schools should make kindergarten a half day or at least allow the children to nap. I have teacher friends who say the long day is very taxing on them, but nonetheless, never a dull moment.

My daughter is in full day kindergarten as well here in MO. The day starts at 9:10 and goes until 4:05. So almost 7 hours. She loves it, and I personaly think it’s great for the kids to have more time to learn, where they can go at an easier pace than a half day would be.

My sons school is 6 hours and 40 minutes per day. Add in getting to and from school and their day is 7 plus hours. Add in the before and/or after care and it’s even longer.

I live in Texas and my child goes to kindergarten from 8 to 3pm, a full day. A few years back they used to have half day kinder-am/pm but they changed it to a full day. My niece lives in Illinois and her kinder is still half day. It just varies where you live. Although i have heard they are trying to make kindergarten a full day in every state. it is a long day for them but within a month they are adjusted.

I live in Connecticut and my daughter goes to full-day kindergarten – 8:30 to 3:10 Monday through Friday. It’s an early day because if she takes the bus in she has to catch the bus at 7:30 but she is loving it. I feel that, while it was quite an adjustment for her, it is really a great thing. According to her teacher whether they are in full-day or regular AM/PM kindergarten, the teachers have the same curriculum to follow so most of the time the AM/PM teachers are cramming in the work while my daughter’s class is still quite busy but also has things like recess and quiet time during the day. Not everyone in Connecticut is full-day though – only a handful of towns I think.

I’m in Cali, and most Kinder classes are only 3 hours, either AM or PM. Some charter/private schools have 5 hour days, but I’ve not heard of an 8-hour kindergarten.

If a school is open from 9-3, her child might ride the bus or even just be dropped off at 8:30. Then she may not get picked up or dropped off at home til closer to 3:30. That would be rounded to 7 hours so that could be what Courteney meant. Children around here are picked up at 8:20 for school and get home at 3:50. That is 7 and a half hours but school is only 6 and a half hours. (Elementary at least)

I teach at a small, private school. Our school day for Kdg is 8:30 – 2:40. But the school is open from 7:30am – 5:30pm. It is our extended day program so any students can be dropped off early and/or stay late. Maybe Coco is there after or before school classroom time begins.
