Leslie Mann on the 'Insanity' of Working Motherhood

You won’t find Leslie Mann sugarcoating the struggle to balance work and family. In a new interview with the Los Angeles Times, the 37-year-old actress paints a vivid scene that working moms everywhere can identify with.

“I was sitting in the kitchen tonight, trying to get ready for this, and my kids were screaming and going crazy,” she shares. “Every time I try to do two things — work and be a mother — it’s insane.” Leslie goes on to admit,

“I don’t deal with it well. I don’t think anybody can. It’s impossible to do, although I’m forever trying.”

In some areas she is succeeding — the girls “are really smart,” Leslie says — and in others, not so much! “My kids have a lot of cavities, I found out today, which means I’m a bad mother,” she jokes.

Although Iris, 7, and Maude, 11, have a few movie credits to their name there are no plans for them to pursue show business as a career, Leslie says, adding that neither aspires to be the next Miley Cyrus.

“Maude…[is] really into school and she doesn’t seem to care too much what Miley Cyrus does at all. She’s really grounded.”

Iris and Maude are Leslie’s daughters with husband Judd Apatow.

Good. They cares what Miley is doing. But not TOO much. They are into acting, but not TOO much. They’re really smart, but not TOO much. I wonder if Leslie Mann knows she is being funny?

She didn’t say they care what Miley is doing. And she didn’t say they are not TOO smart..

She said they are smart and act, but it isn’t already set in stone that they will be in the entertainment industry. For a lot of child actors or children of people in the industry, it seems as though it is expected that they will enter as well, or the children themselves expect to be entertainers.

I think it’s great that the girls seem to know they have their options open. And even though they live in Los Angeles, and have been in movies, they do not have one-track minds. Based solely on this interview of course, but that is the impression I am getting.

Sandra, Bless your heart, but perhaps you should read before you type.

Quote 1) “…she doesn’t seem to care TOO much what Miley Cyrus does….”

Quote 2) …the girls “are really smart…and in others, not so much!”

Her kids are cute and I’m not bashing Ms. Mann except to point out that she’s very defensive. And it’s obvious that if the kids have acting credits, there must be some idea of the hope or possibility of pursuing that course. It’s obvious. What’s not obvious is why she is so defensive or indeed why you are. I’m not aware of a lot of criticism of Ms. Mann that would prompt such defensiveness. Someone should tell her, though, that it’s not an attractive quality. I was attempting to do so as gently as possible.
