It’s a boy for Philadelphia Phillies ace Cole Hamels and wife Heidi Strobel, a Survivor: The Amazon alum.

The couple welcomed Caleb Michael Hamels at 9 a.m. on Friday, October 9th, mere hours after Cole served as the starting pitcher in Game 2 of the Phillies National League Division Series with the Colorado Rockies.

Heidi reportedly went into labor around 4 p.m. on Thursday — during the game itself — but told team officials not to alert Cole until his day on the mound was done. Cole was pulled in the bottom half of the fifth inning in favor of a pinch hitter, received the news that his baby boy was on the way, and immediately departed Citizens Bank Park.

After spending some time with his wife and Caleb at Lankenau Hospital in suburban Philadelphia, the Phillies say they expect that Cole will re-join his team in Denver this weekend for Games 3 and 4 of the series.

The couple announced the pregnancy in July.

Very exciting! Didn’t they adopt a child as well?

Brannon, I believe they were in the process of adopting a little girl from Ethiopia when they found out they were expecting. But they are still going through with the adoption.

Congrats to Cole and Heidi! I’ve always loved the name Caleb.

He may have lost the game but he got a pretty cool consolation prize. Bill Murray’s son is also named Caleb.

Maybe now the baby has safely arrived Cole can concentrate on better pitching. Heidi was smart to tell the team not to tell Cole until the game was over. Turns out he still did crappy and was pulled so they told him about Heidi and he made it back to Philadelphia from Denver in time. I wonder when their adopted daughter will arrive. Hasn’t that adoption been going on for some time now?

Thanks Dee :)

Caleb is hebrew, for man’s best friend of dog.
I’ve always had an issue of naming a child “dog”.
I do like the name though, it was my Yorkie’s name!

Yup poor Cole said before the game the other day that his wife could literally go into labor any minute and well she did!!

Maybe now little Caleb can help bring some new luck to the Phillies tonight against the Rockies!!! GO PHILS

congrats on the baby, but I would have loved it if he pitched a little better…

Actually EternalCanadian the game was not in Denver…it was in Philly so he didn’t have nearly as far to travel! Congratulations to the happy family!

I love the name Caleb Michael! That was actually my second choice for a boys name.

Congrats to them!!!!! I will be delivering at the same hospital, kinda cool. The game was actually played here in Philly, so he didn’t have far to travel. Here’s hoping little Caleb brings his daddy better luck on the mound

Love the name Caleb! Congrats to Cole and Heidi!

Congrats to them on the baby. Although I don’t care for his wife; she rubbed me the wrong way after saying “a lot of people compare our lifestyle to like a military lifestyle” on E!’s Baseball Wives : /

I’d hope that the adoption is off, at least for now (with the understanding that the adoptive child is referred to another couple instead of having to wait). Usually adoption agencies don’t place kids with families who’ve recently given birth — part of the whole “one addition at a time” thing.

If you click the blue text that says “announced the pregnancy”, the article it brings you to says that Cole and Heidi have post-poned their adoption until at least April of next year.

I think they make you wait a min. of 6 months before you can adopt again after you have given birth.

Congratulations.
