Roger Federer's Greatest Title Is 'Dad'

Courtesy Roger Federer

Roger Federer may be the world’s top tennis champion, but when it comes to changing diapers as a first-time dad, he says he is still capable of a double fault.

“Thank God nobody is judging me on it,” Roger told PEOPLE at a press conference Monday following his victory over Spain’s Tommy Robredo at the U.S. Open in New York. “It’s hard! But I’m still trying to be good at it.”

The Swiss pro, 28, and his wife Mirka Vavrinec Federer welcomed identical twin girls Charlene Riva and Myla Rose on July 23rd in Switzerland.

Off the court, the tennis ace takes his daddy duties in stride and tries to enjoy every moment with his babies.

“It’s been a lot of fun being a father and spending time with them,” he said of his 6-week-old twins. “I’m hands on as much as I can because everyday is something new and something different. I don’t want to miss anything.”

The 15-time Grand Slam champ says “Father” is definitely his greatest title.

“It’s an amazing feeling to be called a dad,” he said. “I take a lot of pride in that title.”

Kim Clijsters Defies Odds With U.S. Open Bid

Ray Stubblebine/Reuters/Landov

Moms — and tennis fans — take note! Although it has been 29 years since a Grand Slam event was won by a mother, Kim Clijsters is making a strong case that she will do just that at this week’s U.S. Open.

The 26-year-old former World No. 1 only recently returned to the sport after walking away in 2007 following a series of injuries and the birth of her daughter Jada Ellie, 18 months; Whatever rust she might have been feeling didn’t show, however, as she knocked off No. 3 seed Venus Williams last weekend. Next up is a quarterfinal match today against No. 18 Li Na, with a win guaranteeing her a spot in the semifinals.  “I’m just happy that we have a family and I can balance both,” Kim said after the big upset on Sunday.

“I only just started watching tennis at the start of this year, to be honest. I didn’t really have that much time with a baby running around, and I was happy just to sleep when she was sleeping.”

For her part, Jada remains thoroughly unimpressed with mom’s inspired run at Flushing Meadows. “She knows that her mother plays tennis and that she says, ‘Uh,’” Kim’s husband Brian Lynch jokes. The 31-year-old former professional basketball player — who walked away from a European basketball contract to become a stay-at-home dad — says he understands the attention, however. “I think so many people can relate,” he explains. “How many women in the world have a child and try to make it work with their career?” Brian adds,

“I wouldn’t have stopped playing myself if I didn’t know she was serious about this. It’s a unique dynamic, with a husband and a daughter on the road with her. We can’t look too far down the road.”

One thing is for certain: The couple won’t be caught looking back, either. When asked Sunday whether she now regrets her premature retirement, Kim replied with a definitive no. “I’m glad I made that choice,” she said, “because a lot of beautiful things came out of it.”

Michelle Stafford Expecting – By Surrogate!

Russ Einhorn/Splash News Online

Thanks to the help of a surrogate, The Young and the Restless star Michelle Stafford is expecting her first child — a girl — this December.

Michelle, 43, who has won two Emmys for her role as scheming Phyllis Summers on the CBS daytime drama, tells PEOPLE that she relied on a surrogate after struggling through fertility treatments and surgeries.

“After a three-year journey through hell, I’m elated, ecstatic and feel ultimately lucky to be able to announce I’m expecting my own child via surrogate in December,” Michelle says in a statement.

Michelle, who is single, tried artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization and also looked into adopting after deciding to start a family on her own. Four surgeries and three egg retrievals later, she finally arrived at the surrogate option. “I never wavered in my desire to be a mother,” she says. “But I did waiver on aspects of the process. It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life.”

The actress, who worked with Los Angeles-based IVF specialist Dr. Buylos and the surrogate agency Fertility Miracles, plans to be in the delivery room when her daughter is born in December. In the meantime, she’s already looking forward to a baby shower at the home of pal Kirstie Alley — and readjusting her take on the dating world.

“This entire process has been very, very difficult to do on my own,” Michelle says, “and has made me realize the importance and reason for a partner.”

“Dating men and telling them I’m expecting in December is a little different,” she adds. “I know I just need to find someone who wants the same things as I do.”
