Jennifer Hudson: 'Love is What Drives Me'

Dara Kushner/INF

Over the course of a year that brought the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, new mom Jennifer Hudson says it is the love of her late mother and love for her new son which propels her forward.

“I think she was a great example of being a mother, so when [David Daniel Jr., 7 weeks] first got home, I was like, “Everything I do will be out of love,’” the 28-year-old songstress and actress told PEOPLE Tuesday evening at Central Park’s Rumsey Playfield. “That’s what drives me in the middle of the night when I’m knocked out sleeping and he wakes up.”

“I’m like ‘Oh, I can’t get up.’ But the love is what drives me. Out of love I can do everything.”

Her enthusiasm for parenthood is rivaled by that of fiancé David Otunga. “Sometimes we have to fight over the baby,” Jennifer admits. “Because first he wants him, and then I’ll want him…My son is kind of spoiled right now because no one wants to put him down.” Case in point? Jennifer was asked whether David will dress up for Halloween.

“Yes, his dad went and bought him some Halloween stuff the other night and I was like, ‘Oh, wow, you already did that. I wanted to pick it out!’ See? We have to fight over who gets the baby.”

Christmas — naturally — “is going to be ridiculous,” Jennifer promises. “I can’t wait.”

“I wish he was older so he could remember it, but this is the first one, so I have to go all out. I might get him his own personal Santa Claus, I don’t know but it’s going to be great.”

Marcia Gay Harden Dishes on Eulala's Trapeze Talent

Dara Kushner/INF

Most mothers look forward to watching their children spread their wings and fly, but when Marcia Gay Harden‘s daughter Eulala Grace took the encouragement literally — in the form of trapeze training — the 50-year-old actress was left to battle her nerves!

“One day, for my tenth birthday, my mom took me to a — oh, whatchamacall it — like a tryout class almost — and I went and fell in love with it immediately,” raves Eulala, who has since started a weekly trapeze course.

Watching Eulala shine as she learns the ropes of the sport, Marcia feels nothing but utmost pride. “When you see her up there, her shape and her form, and what she’s doing…I feel she’s safe and makes the right decisions,” explains the proud mama.

That said, 11-year-old Eulala — who can be seen on the big screen this Friday in Whip It – tends to disagree, joking that her mother’s fear of heights leaves her feeling unsettled.

“My mom’s deathly afraid of heights, or so she says, so she’s always like, ‘Oh my gosh, she’s going up the ladder, she’s gonna fall.’ I’m just like, ‘Mom, chill.’ I would never say that to her, but I’m thinking it.”

In addition to Eulala, Marcia and her husband Thaddaeus are also parents to twins Julitta Dee and Hudson Harden, 5.

Stride Rite's New High-Tech Toddler Shoes

Stride Rite Carly shoe

Stride Rite recently launched a new line of shoes for beginning walkers equipped with Sensory Response Technology (nicknamed SRT) — and we’re big fans! The shoes, which all retail for $49, were created with the help of the Leon Root, M.D. Motion Analysis Laboratory to improve the way a child learns to walk via a sensory feedback system. This includes flexibility for growing feet and a unique design to reduce stumbles and falls.

The company’s new stabilizing footwear also sports moisture-wicking linings (to keep little feet drier) and eco-friendly materials such as a recycled EVA heel cup and a partially recycled outsole. The fall collection includes four boys’ styles and seven girls’ styles in baby sizes 3 to 8 in various widths.

We checked out the gorgeous Carly style (pictured) and I noticed that my 19-month-old daughter actually seemed more stable and confident while navigating her terrain. These shoes are a must-have for toddling tots — they literally keep them on their toes.
