Kim Clijsters Tougher Mentally Since Becoming a Mom

Brendan McDermid/Landov

The emotional security of motherhood and marriage have transformed Kim Clijsters not only personally, but also professionally. Fresh on the heels of her big win at this year’s U.S. Open, the 26-year-old Belgian tennis star tells the Times Online that her game has changed in at least one notable respect since returning to the sport following a two year absence.

“I think I have an advantage,” she explained. “In the past I couldn’t keep it going mentally, now I can.”

The road to the award ceremony on Sunday was not without bumps, however; The effort to regain her strength and skill-level prior to delivering daughter Jada Ellie, 18 months, was complicated by how very little tennis Kim had played since retiring in 2007.

“Really, I’d only hit the ball three or four times since my first career ended,” she admits. “I had become pregnant, there was a further nine months of breastfeeding, I was helping take care of my father, who was so sick, there was my husband [Brian Lynch] to look after…To tell you the truth, having ten minutes to myself was a major relaxation.”

The rigors of training aside, her comeback was difficult — at least initially — for Jada as well. Kim adds, however, that her daughter has benefited from the change in routine. “I didn’t want her to be so connected with me that I couldn’t leave her side, it’s important she is around a lot of family, she can sleep at her grandparents, she can sleep at my sister’s,” she explains.

“At first, when I was leaving to go and train, I’d see her at the window crying and I’d have to rush back in and give her a big hug. I don’t know if that was the right thing to do. Now, I say to her, ‘Mummy’s going off to practice’ and she says, ‘Bye-bye.’ Because she knows I’m coming home, everything is fine.”

Echoing earlier sentiments, Kim says that she is hopeful her achievement resonates with working moms everywhere, and notes that the odds of as much are good given her fame as a former World No. 1. “Even before I started to play again, everyone was interested to know what stroller I was buying, what baby food Jada preferred … it is automatically a little different if you are a bit well known,” she says. “It is nice to know that what I have done here might inspire a few people.”

Halle Berry Says Pregnancy Rumors Gave Her 'a Complex'

INF

Walking across the stage in a tight black dress, Halle Berry quickly and definitely put the kibosh on persistent pregnancy rumors during a Thursday appearance on The Jay Leno Show. “I was getting a complex,” the 43-year-old actress admits. “I was like, ‘I’ve got to stop with the burgers or something!’”

Having “put to bed” any and all whispers about a baby-on-the-way, Halle turned to the “fantastic” baby she already has — 18-month-old Nahla Ariela.

She proceeded to tell a “funny” new mom story that only a handful of mothers in the world could possibly relate to. Having graced the cover of Harper’s Bazaar this spring, Halle was at the grocery store with Nahla when her daughter recognized mom’s image on the magazine.

“I’ve got on my sunglasses and I’m in the market. I’m putting all my groceries on the belt, and she’s over my shoulder and I hear her say ‘Mama, Mama,’” Halle recalls. “I knew, ‘Ooh, she saw that cover, that’s cute.’”

A shopper in line behind them then began to coo alongside Nahla, before correcting baby girl. “I heard the woman say, ‘Oh no honey, that’s not your mama, that’s Halle Berry,’” Halle explained. “And I’m like, okay, that’s kind of funny.” Nahla, however, refused to back down on what she already knew to be true!

“Nahla says, ‘Mama! Mama!’ And the lady gets, like, indignant about it, [and said], ‘No, honey, that’s not your mama. That’s Halle Berry.’ And I couldn’t take it any longer so I whipped off my glasses and turned around and I was like, ‘No, I am her mother and I am Halle Berry and she knows what she’s talking about!’ It was one of those great mom moments.”

Nahla is Halle’s daughter with partner Gabriel Aubry.

The Name Game: In Love With L

J names have had their day in the sun: a whole generation of Jennifers and Jessicas, Jasons and Joshuas are now growing up and having babies of their own. Then came the K names popular in the nineties: Kyle, Kayla, Kaitlyn. Next up? The L names. Pamela Redmond-Satran, co-founder of nameberry.com, says that “L is the hottest beginning consonant for babies’ names here and throughout Europe.” Hotter still are names with a double-L sound like Lila and Tallulah.

There are a litany of celebrity babies born recently with L names in the Luke and Lucy family, which means light. They include Lucia, as chosen by Amber and Rob Mariano; Luciana, as chosen by Carnie Wilson; Lucy, as chosen by Nancy Grace; Luc, as chosen by Peter Gabriel; Luca, as chosen by Vincent D’Onofrio; Luka, as chosen by Tom Colicchio and Luke, as chosen by Natalie Morales.

The letter L is long on variety, however, offering unlimited choices — both traditional and quirky — for parents-to-be. Lindsay Davenport opted for Lauren; Gael Garcia Bernal opted for Lázaro; Matthew McConaughey opted for Levi; Tori Spelling opted for Liam; Erinn Hayes opted for Lilah; Shane Richie opted for Lolita and Constance Marie opted for Luna — a name CBB readers clearly loved!

Alessandra Ambrósio: Model Playdate Planner

Jackson Lee/Splash News Online

With so many supermodels on the verge of becoming supermoms, it should come as no surprise that the lines of communication are always open. Alessandra Ambrósio, already a mom to 13-month-old Anja Louise, says that she enjoys sharing advice — especially with mom-to-be Adriana Lima.

“[We] talk about nannies, baby furniture, baby clothes, all baby stuff,” she recently told FOX News. “I’m so happy we can all have play dates together.”

So enthusiastic is Alessandra, 28, about motherhood, it’s actually led her to self-injury! She reveals,

“My daughter is the cutest thing in the world, she melts my heart. But I actually broke my tooth doing the whole ‘you’re so cute’ and clenching.”

Anja is Alessandra’s daughter with fiancé Jamie Mazur.

Sheryl Crow's Son Doesn't Like Her Singing

Michael Buckner/Wireimage

Sheryl Crow may have received thunderous applause for her performance with Miley Cyrus at VH1′s Divas Live on Thursday, but her 2-year-old son, Wyatt Steven, is fed up with her singing. “I want to sing to him, but right now he’s like, ‘Mommy, no! All done! All done!’” the singer/songwriter told PEOPLE at Thursday’s event.

That’s not to say that Wyatt doesn’t appreciate good music. “He’s really into kids’ music and is listening to a lot of Raffi. I think he thinks if I’m singing that I’m going to work,” she says.

Sheryl, 47, adopted Wyatt as a newborn, and last year the singer and her tot traded the glitz of Hollywood for a quieter life in Tennessee.

“Everything about me has changed. My point of reference has changed. [Wyatt] is the first thing I think of in the morning and the last thing I think of at night, and it’s just a lot of joy in my life,” she says. “I definitely sleep a lot less.”

And while most children his age can barely pull up their Pull-Ups, Wyatt is practically ready to do laps.

“He’s a great swimmer, which is crazy. He literally can swim by himself now across the pool, and he has the most wicked sense of humor. He’s definitely a boys’ boy. He loves trucks,” shares the happy mom, adding, “Life is great. I’m loving it. [Wyatt] is just fantastic and I’m working on a record and life is just good.”
