Expectant Gisele Bündchen's New Role: UN Goodwill Ambassador

INF

Gisele Bündchen has a new gig: United Nations goodwill ambassador in a field that’s very familiar to her — the environment.

“I’m really honored to have received a call from the UN to spread the message about climate change in the world,” the supermodel, 29, told reporters during an appearance in Manhattan’s Washington Square, where her new position was announced Sunday.

Casually dressed in jeans and a T-shirt, Gisele, who is expecting her first child with husband Tom Brady in December, displayed the slightest of baby bumps at the event, where she discussed what inspired her activism.

“I started paying attention to what was happening with the environment when I had a visit to the Xingu area of the Amazon in 2003. I spent a week with an Indian tribe and everyone was complaining they were getting sick because the waters were polluted,” she said.

“All these pesticides were going into the rivers because there were no trees to protect the rivers. The fish were sick. The water was polluted. I was like, ‘Who is doing something about this?’ “

She decided to take action, blogging her green tips on her Web site and creating a charity, Agua Limpa, whose aim is to plant trees along the Amazon to help purify the water. Now, she’s joining forces with the United Nation’s Environmental Programme to spread the good word.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better childhood,” Gisele said. “We must act now, so future generations have the same opportunity. Mother Earth is our fundamental life-support system, and by becoming aware and responsible now, we can assist in preserving the planet.”

December??? OH MY.. she is so tiny!! but she looks great!! i lve her hair

Savanna on

I highly doubt December! Unless she explodes these next couple of weeks.

Courtney on

how she carries and her height have major part to do with her looking so tiny for someone that’s six months pregnant especially on their first pregnancy as this is for Gisele by the way I think she’s carrying beautifully and can’t wait to see the little munchkin

kai on

lol, those amazon supermodels.

she’s looking good!

Patrice on

FINALLY Gisele is oficially showing off that baby bump that she’s been trying to hide for months! And what a wonderful thing she is doing. Brazil is selling off and tearing down hundreds of thousands of acres of precious rainforest to cattle farmers every day. It’s excellent to see one of its country’s actual citizens coming forward and speaking out about what’s going on there. It’s tragic.

Patrice on

Courtney: I agree. Same thing with Nicole Kidman.

Elizabeth on

I heard that it’s a boy and his name is going to be Gabriel.

Rye on

I heard that she was having a boy too with the Gabriel name mentioned in the same way. Not sure if it’s true. Kind of was hoping she would have a little girl! Either way, congrats to them!

aurora mia on

It love seeing beautiful women become EVEN more beautiful when they’re pregnant. She looks so young, fresh and amazing!

Y on

Oh god, another celeb trying to tell everyone how to be more “green”…All the while, they are driving gas guzzling SUV’s and living in huge mansions, flying private jets etc. LOL They don’t even know what they are talking about.

Ann on

Just because she may not be 100 % “Green” in her lifestyle, she’s not allowed to take up a cause that she is passionate about? There are plenty of small changes you can make in your life to go green, and they all make a difference. Gisele has done a lot of environmental work over the past couple of years, she’s a member of the Rainforest Alliance, she donates a portion of the proceeds from her sandals line Impanema to protect the rainforest & water sources, and she has a children’s cartoon coming out called “Gigi and the Green Team” among other things. It’s always nice to see celebrities use their fame for a good cause. Gisele looks amazing and has that pregnancy glow about her. I’m glad that we’re finally getting pictures, and hopefully we get to see more after the baby is born too!

Summer on

She looks amazing!!

Y on

I just think it’s hypocritical, that’s all. It’s obvious that they are only doing it for publicity reasons.

Amy on

Any celebrities or people in general who can help our planet stay more clean and green is alright in my book. I am the type of person who believes you should use what you have and not take from the Earth in excess more than you need. If you want to hunt, fine, but you should eat all of the meat on the animal, and not just hunt for fun. That is a lesson the Native Americans have taught us- they only hunted for meat and food, they left the majority of animals alive, and they also treated Mother Earth well by not polluting. If more people are conscious of Earth and the environment, the better we will be and our generations to come will be. I applaud Gisele for stepping up and hope that she continues to help Earth and the environment.

Karen on

She looks fantastic!

I agree with the other posters……she is soooo tiny!!! Then I thought about how tall she is and it made more sense. I can’t wait to see their little baby! She looks GORGEOUS!!! :)

Jenn on

I just really don’t understand how she can be due in December.. she’s so small. Even the other supermodels like Adriana Lima and Karolina Kurkova, they seem bigger now at 6 months than she is and Heidi Klum seemed bigger at 6 months, too. I have never seen anyone carry that small at 6 months…even Nicole Kidman, who was way tiny throughout!
Oh well. Who knows! Those are just my thoughts on the pic. :) She does look gorgeous though!

Janna on

I agree, Y. It’s a “Do as I say, not as I do” mentality.

With that said, she looks terrific and happy and I hope she’s enjoying pregnancy. It suits her!

cassie on

she looks so tiny for only having 3 months left!

gargoylegurl on

Gisele is beautiful. She looks great. This is a front shot, so we can’t really see her bump. We all carry differently, so I don’t think she looks particuarly small, plus it’s not a side view so it’s difficult to judge.

Alycia on

Remember those front on pics of Camila Alves at the beach, she hardly looked pregnant, that is until she turned sideways! Front on shots are so hard to see

Rach on

I think you should do your part. I don’t wear fur or leather, but I do eat meat.I don’t own a car, I carpool or use public transit or you know..my legs.I wear clothes that are made all over. I don’t care what the story behind them is, I get what I can afford.I do not eat local much, because it costs almost 3 times as much as the stuff from Costa Rica and wherever.Once again, i get what I can afford. I don’t use energy saver bulbs inside my house because of all the mixed information on them.I recycle, but I do use disposibles because cloth is not an option and I cannot depend on ordering the biodegradable diapers always (they are expensive and must be ordered in advance depending on the reliability of your post service).I think sometimes people try to come down so hard on people, not just celebrities about the “green” thing.Do what you can and what is in your means. Any effort goes a long way.

About her baby bump, after seeing many episodes of some show called “I didn’t know I was pregnant”,lol I don’t doubt size or anything at all lol.I am sure though, that being a celebrity and esp being a model, she is on a pregnancy/exercise/stretch mark diet and routine that will help her get back to supermodel form in no time.

Lorus on

She’s tall so she’s carrying up and not out. I have a friend who is 5’9 and even in her ninth month of her 4th pregnancy she was smaller than both of mine (5’6) when I was about 30 weeks along!

CelebBabyLover on

Rach- Um, why would a pregnant woman be on a diet? I would certainly hope that Gisele is not doing anything to endanger her baby!

Y- Believe me, from what I’ve read, the UN does not take their Goodwill Ambassador program lightly, and from what I’ve read, they aren’t interested in hiring people to be Goodwill Ambassadors who only want to do so for publicity.

Anyway, it definently looks like Gisele is Nicole Kidman 2.0! :)

CelebBabyLover on

Oh, and I have seen side shots of Gisele, and she does indeed look more pregnant than she appears in this picture. :)

Kait on

I think how she’s carrying really small has to do with her job and her height. If you’re a model, you’re going to have to have really tight abs and stay fit. If that’s the case, it could be that it’s not causing her baby to protrude outward as much as it would for someone who never worked out.

Just my two cents. She’s definately glowing!

Jasmine C. on

Um where’s her bump?

Rach on

CelebBabyLover – many celebrity mothers are. I know many models especially that get pregnant and the hard work begins !! They aren’t like me with the luxury of going back to work in some cushy nice clothes to hide all the bits and lose the weight and stretch marks when I feel like it. Their canvas is their body and the condition it is in is what gets them hired.I know many model friends that as soon as they found out they were pregnant the regime began. They had to work-out, go get treatments for the marks, cellulite etc,and eat healthy six meals a day or something like that with very little to no junk.I think sometimes we like to believe that they really got back into their size 2 jeans 2 weeks after giving birth etc by doing nothing, but the truth is, there is so much going on behind the scenes, it is unreal.

CelebBabyLover on

Rach- But isn’t it endangering the unborn child if a pregnant woman is on a diet? Or am I mis-understanding diets during pregnancy?

Rach on

CelebBabyLover – I do know that the friends I know did consult their doctors and also a nutritionist which the agency got them to see. They made a nutrition plan and the rule was to try to stick to it as best as you can. It’s a bit fuzzy, but I think it was like 6-8 small meals a day,so that the metabolism kept running or something. The exercise plan was also done with the help of a personal trainer that the agency got and modified with the pregnancies.

When I said diet, I didn’t mean that they starved themselves. They had very good, nutritious diets.I think some of us (ie ME lol) could really benefit from diets like that with all the fresh fruit and veg, lean proteins, carbs and stuff.I was put on almost the same diet when I was pregnant because my hyperemesis and other factors were not letting me gain enough weight,so the scale kept coming up that I was underweight. It was really good though, it was the first time in my life I had actually thought about the food I was eating as fuel and actually having a purpose other than to satiate my appetite. I thought about what I was eating, how they related to one another and if it was beneficial to me.It gave me so much control to put down the munchies,or to only have a few to get the craving met,but not to gorge and to pick up a fruit instead.I know some women that just go nuts with this “eating for two” thing and end up eating a whole carton of ice cream or something in one sitting. My doctor had told me to eat more, just healthier things and try to get in all of my food groups daily. It did maintain my weight well until I was put on bedrest early and then the inactivity (I was told) made me balloon !

My mom went to a spa postpartem after my last sibling and she said that the eating regime was the same way.Eat alot (but of healthy things) and watch your metabolism go and with it, the excess weight. She said she felt like a pig and she had never eaten so much on a day to day basis in her life, but it did slim her down.It is true though. Cutting simple things out of your diet like soda and watering down your juice are also easy ways to slim down without crazy change.

CelebBabyLover on

Rach- Thanks for the explanation! When I think of dieting in the celebrity world, I do, I admit, tend to think of, well, not eating a lot. However, I realize now that the type of diet you’re referring to is probably more like the one my father was put on after his heart attack….Simply eating healthier. :)

Rach on

CelebBabyLover – You got it girl :)

MiB on

Y and others, how do you know she flies private planes and drives SUVs? Or that she only does it for show? The UN doesn’t take it’s ambassador program lightly, as celebbabylover said, and they won’t take someone who is in it just for fame. Besides, from what I’ve heard (and I really don’t follow her, so what I hear must be quite widely known) she has been doing a lot for the environment in the Amazon basin.

As far as living green, just like Rach, I live as green as I can; I buy a mixture of new clothes, vintage clothes and eco-friendly clothes, I buy locally produced and ecological food when possible, I don’t eat bananas since I can’t get ecologically grown bananas where I live. I try to go by train, but also have to fly a lot since trains aren’t always a feasible option, neither is not travelling, but I try to compensate the carbon emission. I don’t own a car, instead I use publik transport, bike or walk. I don’t normally let my appliances stay on stand by, I turn off the lights when I’m not in a room and I keep my flat at a moderate temperature (rather an extra sweater that turning the heating on or up in winter) and I turn off the faucet when I brush my teeth and do the dishes. I only wash full machines and use environmentally friendly cleaning agents. I recycle and reuse when I can (recycling is not always possible where I live). Living green doen’t always have to be visible to others, it doesn’t have to be a statement or a sacrifice, so a person can live green without seeming to do so.

Enough ranting from my side, she looks wonderful, and judging from her hand, her belly is much bigger than the slimming black T-shirt leads us to think.
