Violet Affleck Thinks Mom Works in a Trailer

Jen Lowery/Startraks

Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck may be among the busiest actors in Hollywood, but their first-born daughter Violet Anne has her own ideas about what her parents do for a living.

“The older one thinks that I work in a trailer. She thinks that my work is getting hair and makeup done,” Jennifer, 37, told reporters at the Toronto International Film Festival press conference for her new movie The Invention of Lying, costarring Rob Lowe, Tina Fey, Jonah Hill and Ricky Gervais, who directed it.

Violet, 3 ½, also thinks mom’s job is to bow to audiences. “If you ask her what I do, she’ll say she remembers me bowing on stage when I did a show in New York (Cyrano de Bergerac in late 2007), and so she’ll say, ‘My mom sometimes will bow on stage and sometimes she gets her hair and makeup done,’” says Jennifer. “It’s a great job!”

The actress has yet to bring Violet or her little sister Seraphina Rose Elizabeth, 8 months, to Take Your Daughters to Work Day. “She’s never seen a set, but she will at some point. She has made it to the trailer and to craft service. She gets M&M’s when she comes.”

And can Violet expect to see her parents – who last appeared in the same movie six years ago, in Daredevil – onscreen together again?

“The question keeps coming up, and we have literally never spoken about it,” notes Jennifer. “He’s a beautiful director and such a gorgeous writer but, you know, to go to work with him, I would just be like, ‘I need to go home to the kids.’”

The Invention of Lying hits theaters October 2nd.

i genuinely am fond of this family but it annoys me that they complain about privacy and feed the press little junkets of family life when they have a film to promote! just mo!

- maggie on

Aww that’s sweet of her to call Ben a gorgeous writer. He is.

I’ve never seen one picture of their younger daughter. Is it just me or have they not released any pictures for privacy?

- Lisa on

Wow! I can’t believe Sera is already 8 months! Time has passed really fast, it seems like we were just hearing about her yesterday..well to me anyway! What a adorable family!

- Aubreigh on

Hey jen,if u don’t want the kids photographed, don’t talk about them in the press. You just fuelled the interest in your kid.Put 2 and 2 together!

- ang on

Very funny. It is always interesting to get a child’s perspective on your job. I am an accountant and a few weeks ago I heard my 6 year old telling her cousin that I “do maths” at work. Which is true in it’s own way!!

Lisa they haven’t released a photo but there have been paparazzi pictures on Popsugar and some other websites. They asked that cbb and people not run paparazzi images, only if they are at an event. I emailed them to ask a few months ago because I wanted to see Sera too!!

- Brandi on

I just adore this family…and i can totally see how Vi would think that…haha i mean it’s not as if she can see any of mom’s movies…so cute! And to those who are down on Jen about her comments about the paparazzi–I think there is a HUGE difference between an innocent comment or question in an interview and being willin to answer and having cameras follow you and shoved in your space while taking your daughter to school and going to the grocery store. That’s what Jen’s gripe has always been–and i don’t blame her–mentioning your KIDS once in a while has nothing to do with getting photographed every time you breathe…and that is just MY opinion. LOVE the Garner-Afflecks–so down-to-earth and with the two most gorgeous daughters…

- Megan on

In their defense I am sure she is asked questions point blank in these press junkets so she probably keeps a couple “cute kid stories” on hand to appease the numerous reporters that ask without giving too much away. She’d probably take more flack if she said no comment everytime she was asked “do your kids like to visit you on set?” or “how are your kids?”. Might as well control the information that goes out.

i was just wondering whether CBB plans to never post any papparazzi pictures of this family again? i mean, i completely understand it’s up to you guys, but i just wondered what makes them so special that theirs won’t be posted but others will? is it just ’cause they asked? because for some reason that doesn’t seem fair.

- JM on

The kids are really cute!!

I agree JM, they always talk about the kids, but they never want pictures. I mean, it’s understandable to want privacy, but then don’t constantly talk about them.

Also Gwen Stefani, Jessica Alba, Nicole Richie and several others have their kids photographed all the time, and the pictures are always on cbb and people. I don’t understand what makes Jennifer and Ben so different, they have the same job. It doesn’t seem fair. I used to really like them, but when they constantly complain about privacy, yet talk about the kids, it gets to me.

- Erika on

I always got the impression from Ben and Jennifer that it was the paparazzi covering Violet’s daily school trip that was the big nightmare. It was EVERY SINGLE DAY. I think they can deal with everything else, but that was just ridiculous for awhile. It got to the point where they dreaded leaving their house to take their daughter to school and it was disrupting the school environment and hurting other kids. That’s just sad and I’m glad they speak out about that.

- Lynn on

Yep, Lynn, I agree – The paps were on them every single day, and they even took pictures of Violet when she was just with her nanny (No famous parents there), and to me, that is too much for a small child. I’m glad the CBB doesn’t post the pap pictures of the Affleck family. Just because someone is famous, doesn’t give people the right (Paps) to stalk their families and scare their children.

- Jane on

i believe they expressively asked news organizations to not publish photos, and cbb has obliged. they mentioned how scared their daughter (understandably) was about the situation, and then parents at their daughter’s preschool started to complain as well. one site even published photos of violet playing with a friend at a park, with the kid’s mom. they didn’t obscure the other child’s face, or the mother’s, and the lady was outraged.
and answering a question about kids is like any other press junket question. adam brody recently answered a junket question by telling a funny story about something he did with his brother. but i don’t think he was inviting paparazzi to come hang out with him and his brother. same for jennifer and her kids…

- noam on

I don’t understand the logic in saying that sharing your kids’stories is to appease the reporters. And the justification, they do it because otherwise they would catch some flack?
Seriously,I’ve watched Johnny Depp or Jodie Foster making the round of interviews for their movies.Every time some smart presenter tried the kid angle, just a warm smile, a generic ‘they’re fine’.I didn’t hear they lost their superstar status or were resented by their fans for their reserve.
You set a tone early on and the kid territory is left alone. You share stories since day 1,it’s not easy to go back.
You just don’t give your hand to a shark and act surprised if it takes the entire arm.

- Cécile on

Lynn- Exactly! According to Jennifer, the paps were actually knocking over some of Violet’s classmates in their attempt to get pictures of her. That is just plain unacceptable!

JM and Erika- The reason CBB does not post pap pictures of Violet or Sera is because Jen and Ben’s rep asked them not to do so for awhile (I know this because I, like Brandi, e-mailed CBB when I noticed that they were no longer posting pictures of Violet), and they’re trying to respect that.

Also, the Garner-Afflecks aren’t the only ones that do so. In a comment from the CBB staff on someone’s comment a few months back, they revealed that Julia Roberts has also asked that they not post pictures of her kids…so they don’t. The reason they post pap pictures of other celeb kids is because those kids’ parents haven’t asked them not to. :)

- CelebBabyLover on

Oh, and I don’t think Jen and Ben have ever said that they NEVER want their kids photographed. I think their complaint is similar to the one that Brad Pitt has made so many times…that the photogs get right up in the kids’ faces, yell their names, and often have no regard for people’s safety.

- CelebBabyLover on

Such a cute comment about Violet’s take on what her mom does on her job. I am reminded of that old TV show with Art Linkletter; *Kids say the darnest things*. Very Cute!

On a separate note: In all fairness to CBB and People, (some other websites as well) I’m sure if other celebs or their reps requested that no parapazzi pics of their kids be published, they would also honor that request. FYI, lots of other sites have pictures of the Affleck children quite frequently.

- Rosy J on

Though the Afflecks may have chosen a profession that places them in the public eye, their children did not make any such choice. When they provide minor details about their children in order to appease those of you with boring lives, it does not then give you the right to be privy to pictures of those children obtained by relentless stalkers masquerading as legitimate photographers.

- Angel on

i agree that it’s not right that they followed them to school and places but i’m just saying that they’re not the only ones to have complained. and for some reason their needs are respected. i mean, don’t get me wrong, i like seeing pictures here but i just wondered why their pap pictures aren’t posted and everyone else’s are. and it’s not just as if the school pictures aren’t being posted, which i would understand but NONE of this family are posted. i’m sure a lot of celeb families would appreciate this kind of treatment and yet it only happens for them.

If PEOPLE.com is specifically asked by a celebrity or their rep not to post paparazzi images of their family, that request is respected. This includes more than the Garner-Affleck family – additionally, you will not see paparazzi photos of Julia Roberts, Matt Damon or the Cox-Arquette’s on CBB or PEOPLE.com. We will post event photos of these families, for example, we posted a photo of Jennifer and Violet at The Little Mermaid earlier this year. If you have additional questions, please email cbbtips@gmail.com.

I think it’s really nice that CBB and people follow the wishes of celebs who don’t want their pictures on here, and I respect their wishes. I understand how celebrities don’t want pictures taken at all times, and how difficult and annoying it must be to them and the kids. So I think it’s great that you do that!!

I do think the request is sort of pointless though, because people like me, who go on all kinds of sites everyday (justjared, popsugar, perezhilton, tmz.com) still see the photos anyway.

- Erika on

To Erika: I don’t think the request is pointless, as People is the biggest, most viewed celeb site by far out there. Popsugar Just Jared and the rest (well, maybe not TMZ) are rather obscure to most people except the most celeb obsesssed!
I also think its great that People and CBB follow their requests because after all, it is they who are famous, not their children and if they don’t want their children photographed that is not unreasonable. THe celebrities have probably have gone to Just Jared (another big on celebrity babies site) and have asked them the same thing but they won’t respect their request.

- Linda on

Linda- I agree. And JM, yes, other celebs have complained about some aspect of the paps (Brad Pitt is one example. He has expressed many times how he wishes that the paps would use long lenses instead of getting right up in the kids’ faces, yelling their names, and scaring them.), but they have not actually asked PEOPLE/CBB to not post pictures of their kids.

The Afflecks, Dammons, Roberts/Moders, or Cox/Arquettes, on the other hand, have.

- CelebBabyLover on

Thanks for answering my question Brandi, appreciate it.

- Lisa on

CECILE, totally agree. I do think Jen&Ben have scaled it back in the recent time, but they do have to take part of the blame. Maybe they learnt a lesson, although playing up the happy-family angle surely hasn’t hurt their careers…

- kai on

I enjoy hearing a couple cute stories about what the kids say/do. I like telling stories of my own kids. But I dont need or want to see photos detailing every single move they make out in public. A photo at a public event or even a couple professional photos around the birthday because I love to see how kids grow and change & if I can tell if they look like which parent. Just because a person is an actor/musician or well-known it doesnt give people the right to shove a camera in your face or that of your kids just because you run to a store or go for ice cream.
