Ashlee Simpson-Wentz on Her Son: He's 'the Best Part of Everything' I Do

There’s no convincing Ashlee Simpson-Wentz that greener pastures await her later in life.

“It’s always, ‘Thirties is the ideal age.’ Then, ‘No, it’s 40s!’ I guess I don’t have an ideal age. I like to live in the moment,” she reveals in the October issue of Redbook.

While the 24-year-old singer/actress may not spend time ruminating on her age, she recognizes that life has been that much more special since giving birth to her first child last year.

“It’s kind of fun because I have a child and I’m at a place where I get to reboot and do something new,” she notes.

“Your 20s are a great time to explore and a great time to have a baby. [My son] is the best part of everything.”

Relishing her new role as a mother, Ashlee and her husband Pete Wentz have happily settled into a familiar routine since the birth of Bronx Mowgli, now 9 ½ months.

Fortunately for the couple, the transition into first-time parenthood was particularly smooth — a result, Ashlee says, of the nine months of pregnancy.

“The great thing about being pregnant is…it really does prepare you,” she explains. “Your body is changing and it’s an amazing time to feel that connection.”

According to the proud mama, feel that connection between mother and child she did! Counting herself among the “lucky” ones, Ashlee has only fond memories of both her pregnancy and delivery.

“I didn’t mind at all,” she admits. “I think being pregnant is so beautiful. I had the best pregnancy and I loved giving birth. It was just the most amazing thing, so surreal but so real.”

In fact, she cites the nine-month span as one of her peak periods of physical fitness.

“Being pregnant was the healthiest I’ve ever been in my life. Except for the cupcakes.”

The addition of baby Bronx has forced the Melrose Place star to see her family — including Pete — in an entirely new light. “[Pete] is a great dad. So sweet and loving,” Ashlee boasts.

And while she had little doubt he would step up to the plate as an excellent father, Ashlee can’t help but take in each moment the father-son duo spend together.

“When you see the dad with your son, it’s a whole new side of them. Just beautiful.”

Similar to her relationship with Pete, Ashlee’s bond with her own parents has equally blossomed since becoming a mother.

“We were always close, but as you get older, and when you go through something like a pregnancy, you think, ‘Oh, my parents are wonderful!’ she says.

“[My mom has] always been such a great mom, and now she’s a great grandmother! Bronx loves her.”

As for her older sister Jessica — who once considered Ashlee and her friends “just the little sisters” — becoming an aunt has set off her biological clock! “She’s always saying, ‘Oh, I want a baby!’” Ashlee reports.

Although she may have beaten her older sister to motherhood, Ashlee wholeheartedly believes the cards will eventually fall into place.

“Being a mom’s so empowering and incredible. I’m one of those people who believes that life brings things to you at a certain time for a certain reason, and if you just go with it, that’s where the best moments come from.”

Despite being intent on enjoying each moment in life as they present themselves, Ashlee can’t help but look forward to what her future will bring. “I’d like to be an awesome mom,” she shares.

“I’d like to have a big old family.”

Va va va voooom!!! Ashlee looks awesome!!! Forget the tomboy days….she’s looking great as a sexy Mama!!! ;)

that cover looks about as fake as you can possibly get. Seriously Redbook? you want us to think that all of us women no matter our ages lounge around looking like this? Have these women dressed in their daily attire and MAYBE it would be more realistic.

- mom to boys on

Holy moley, the magazines really need to get a grip on the photoshopping.

They look horrible, all 3 of them. Not even remotely like themselves. It’s like they think that people would somehow be offended by the sight of other people in a magazine, unless photoshopped until they barely resemble human beings anymore.

- Sidney on

Alicia and Connie look nothing like that.

- Sadie on

This didn’t include another quote I read where they asked her if she envied her sister’s single life and she said something like “I really don’t.” That along with talking about how Jessica is always saying she wants a baby and that your 20s is the best time to have a baby (Jessica is 29 and single) just seem kind of cold. I may get jumped on for saying that, and I know they may pick and choose what to put in the article and its all about context. It just seems inappropriate to talk about how much your sister wants a baby when she just went through such a public breakup and is always being labeled “unlucky in love.” Maybe I’m just being overly dramatic, it just rubbed me the wrong way…and I don’t really even like Jessica! lol

- Sadie on

Alicia looks the best out of the 3. Who ever did Ashlee’s make-up did a horrible job, her eyes look awful. I’m a big Ashlee fan but she looks horrible.

And Sadie I agree with you, but we have to take into account that the statements that Ashlee made were probably taken out of context. I don’t think she’d intentionally say anything hurtful about her sister.

- Em on

Sadie I kind agree.

I was always told that “life is not a contest” so it doesn’t matter who has a baby first or who gets married first. Some people find that all sooner then others and just because Jessica is older doesn’t mean she had to be the one to do it all before Ashley. At the same time it’s got to be hard on Jessica to always hear about, “Well your sister got married and had a kid how come you couldn’t or when will you?”…it totally annoys me.

- JMO on

Em, yeah I know, I mean what is she supposed to say when asked “Do you wish you were single like your sister?” Yes? Obviously not. And her saying Jessica wanted a baby may have just been a way of showing how good of an aunt Jessica is to Bronx or how maternal she is. I guess reading it all in one article, that represents probably an hour of conversation makes it look worse than it was.

- Sadie on

So what’s “The one thing happily married women won’t do”? Did anyone read that article? I’m guessing cheat. And yeah, holy photoshopped nonsense!!

- crimpe on

ya the cover is really fake but ashlee seems like a great mom :)

- Tina. on

Wow. Ashlee looks amazing. What a hot mama.

- Mary-Helen on

:) that cover is almost hilariously airbrushed. but it’s not just that, it’s the make-up and the way they are posing all just looks SO fake. i don#t see the point in such shoots.

- JM on

The photoshopping on this cover is ridiculous to the point of ugly. Connie Britton in particular is an amazing natural beauty and there was no need for all the heavy make-up and retouching.

I don’t think Ashlee meant anything bad re: Jessica wanting a baby. But I will say that if I were Jessica or her mom, I would’ve sat Ashlee down for a loooong time and begged her to reconsider the whole “Bronx Mowgli” thing because…seriously.

- Erica on

I’m so glad that Ashlee is loving motherhood, but this article makes me sad for Jessica! It must be really hard to see your LITTLE sister become a mother before you. And now that Jess is single again, it doesn’t look like she’ll be having kids any time soon.

- urbanadventurertales on

awful airbrushed cover. ashlee’s makeup couldn’t look worse. but she looks great in the second photo! great young mom! except definitely wouldn’t want my child to have one of the worst baby names in the world, haha, sorry, but you know it’s true!

- nks on

Yeah, that cover looks awful but I loved the interview! Ashlee’s always been my (musically) guilty pleasure. I love her relationship with Pete and their relationship with their son! It’s just so, so sweet. :)

- Stephany on

I dunno if anyone has said this, but sometimes the interviews are done months or weeks in advance so Jessica’s breakup may not have happpened yet. Also, whats wrong with saying her sister wants a baby? Its not like jessica is a 45 year old something schlub who is over the hill(biologically anyway). She’s 29 with plenty of time left for her baby. Having said that Ashlee looks god awful and I didn’t even recognize alicia silverstone!! Oh and I’ve never been pregnant, but who LOVES giving birth??? Physically speaking it isn’t something that is supposed to be enjoyable.

- Electra on

Electra, for some women giving birth can be an amazingly empowering thing. obviously it depends on how your labour goes but I found mine incredible – for 90% of it I was on top of the pain and there was an amazing adrenaline surge after each contraction. I’ve never felt so proud of my body. I loved that I did it.

- Lea on

Without reading this I had NO idea who the people on the cover were supposed to be – wow! That said, I agree with sadie but will give ashlee the benefit of the doubt in thinking she was attempting to make her sis out to be a great aunt. Still – ouch. Also feel bad that Jessica is being made out to be some kind of spinster – she is only 29!!

- brannon on

I love Ashlee (not so much Pete) she’s so lovely and clearly adores Pete and her son Bronx, he’s so cute!

- babyboopie on

I have never really seen it before but in the second photo Ashlee is stunning. Also I always saw her as a little immature but she seems to have grown up a lot and sounds like a really great parent.

As for loving giving birth, my sister-in-law was in labour for nearly 3 days and then ended up having an emergancy c-section. No lie but afterwards she kept saying how she loved every second and couldn’t wait to do it all again. Suppose everybody just has a different experience.
