Annika Sörenstam Adjusts to the Needs of a Newborn
Days after welcoming their first child — daughter Ava Madelyn — former golf pro Annika Sörenstam and her husband Mike McGee are finally getting a dose of what their new life as parents has to offer. “It is Monday of Labor Day weekend and we are enjoying a quiet day at home,” Annika blogs. With the extended family — including the grandparents who were on hand to help with night feedings — having packed their bags and returned home, the new mama admits the couple are learning the ropes of parenthood completely on their own.
“There is no manual, DVD, or virtual aid on how to take care of little Ava, only common sense and lots of love.”
The first priority on the list has been adapting to their daughter’s schedule — something neither Annika nor Mike completely anticipated! “Despite all the warnings, I don’t think we realized how much there is to do with a newborn,” she says.
“One minute it’s feeding time, the next it is time for a diaper change and then nap time. The cycle then starts over every two-three hours. During the nap time, we try to catch up on the household duties, e-mails, or the needed rest.”
Despite the adjustment period faced by many new parents, Annika and Mike are happily settling in with their baby girl, now 9 days. “Being a Mom is the most rewarding and satisfying thing I have ever done,” the proud mama shares. “I feel lucky to have achieved a great career and to continue to excel in the business world, but this is the most satisfying feeling ever.”
Next up for the new family of three? Catching the US Open! “This afternoon we would like to catch some tennis from the US Open in [New York],” she writes.
