The Name Game: Flower Power

Summer is turning to autumn but for some celebrity babies, spring is forever in the air. “There’s nothing sweeter or more feminine than an old-fashioned flower name for a girl, and celebrities — along with other baby namers — are looking at lists of botanical choices for inspiration,” according to nameberry.com co-founder Linda Rosenkrantz. “Lately, an interesting variety of flower names has been sprouting across the celebrity landscape, both old favorites and some that have rarely been used before.”

Clearly, the front-runners in this category remain Lily and Rose, with Lily more commonly used as a first name and Rose as a middle name. Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis were so enamored they used this exactly combination with daughter Lily-Rose, 10. Gilbert Gottfried also opted to double the flower power with daughter Lily Aster, 2. Other celebrity parents who fell in love with Lily include Lisa Hartman Black and Clint Black (parents to Lily Pearl, 8), Kate Beckinsale and Michael Sheen (parents to Lily Mo, 10), Fred Savage (dad to Lily Aerin, 16 months), Greg Kinnear (dad to Lily Katherine, turning 6 this month) and Chris O’Donnell (dad to Lily Anne, 10 this month).

Rose, on the other hand, is “without doubt the middle name of the last couple of decades,” according to Linda. It works for so many parents because it both softens and sweetens all kinds of first names, from the classic to the boyish. A few celebrity examples from the rose garden include Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s Sunday Rose, 13 months, Jon Stewart’s Maggie Rose, 3 ½, Dylan McDermott’s Charlotte Rose, 4 this month, Ewan McGregor’s Esther Rose, 7 ½, and Melissa and Tammy Etheridge’s Johnnie Rose, 2 ½.

Beyond Lily and Rose, there are some other botanical names gaining steam. Daisy was chosen by Meg Ryan for daughter Daisy True, 5, as well as by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver with Daisy Boo Pamela, 6, and whose other daughters are the equally flower-friendly Poppy Honey Rosie, 7, and Petal Blossom Rainbow, 5 months. Violet — a sentimental vintage name revived by Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck and also used by Foo Fighter Dave Grohl — has steadily climbed the charts in recent years, while another hot new revival is Iris, as chosen by Jude Law and Melanie Brown, as well as Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann. On the other hand, Jasmine, used by Nigel Barker and others, is not as popular as it was just a few short years ago.

And now for the trailblazers! Not only are garden variety species sprouting up with increasing regularity, but exotic blooms like Geri Halliwell’s Bluebell Madonna, 3, and Rain Pryor’s Lotus Marie, 17 months, have a place in the landscape as well. Linda goes on to note that “sometimes parents choose the safer middle spot for an unusual flower name they wouldn’t necessarily pick for first place, as in Rebecca Romijn and Jerry O’Connell’s daughter Charlie Tamara Tulip, 8 months, and Tony Hawk’s 14-month-old daughter Kadence Clover.” Lastly, she points out that Willow — as chosen by Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, Michelle Monaghan and Dave Grohl — is a “fast rising” name, although it is a tree rather than a flower. She adds,

“The last time flowery names were this popular was at the turn of the last century — it’s taken more than a hundred years for their comeback.”

In addition to her work with nameberry.com, Linda has co-authored ten baby-naming books with Pamela Redmond Satran. Their newest title, Beyond Ava & Aiden, is available now.

Which flower names do you like best? Least? Would you or did you use a flower name for your own child?

I absolutely love the name Rose for a middle name. The flower represents strong femininity to me-the perfect combination. Also like Lily (my uber-girly cat’s name :) ) and Iris, but as with Rose, more for middle names than first.

- Lauren on

My daughter does not have a flower name, but we plan on naming our next child (if it’s a girl) Violet. Not sure of the middle name yet, but I absolutely adore the name Violet. It’s so soft and classy.

- Kristen on

I love the name Rose for a middle name. I like the names Violet and Jasmine as well. I really don’t like flower names like Bluebell or Tulip. Those are just too ridiculous for my taste.

- Kaylie on

My 4 year old daughter’s name is Rose. My husband & I both liked ‘Lily’ but I wanted something lower down the popularity charts. I wasn’t specifically looking for a flower name (more so a classic ‘old lady’ name.) I do like Violet a lot too, though would probably use it as a middle name, rather than a first name, if we ever had a second daughter.

I know two sisters (age 4 & 2) called Azaylia and Acacia.

- Jen on

I have 2 neices named Daisy and Lillianna. Cousins, not sisters. Iris and Violet have always been on my name list.

- Lacey on

I have had the first name Violet picked out since high school, and I am now in my early thirties. I still love it, and will be naming my child that if it is a girl. It was something of a disappointment to see it surge in popularity, as I have loved it for such a long time, and it was once so rare.

My BFF put a spin on Lily and named her daughter Tigerlily, which I think is really beautiful. They call her Lily sometimes. As she gets older she will be able to chose whether she wants the unique name or the more common name.

- millefleur on

Isn’t “Suri” rose in farsi or persan ?

- Jo Ann v. on

My daughter is named Lily. I also like the name Rose, but I wouldn’t use the two names together (ie- I wouldn’t do “Lily Rose” or have one girl named Lily and the other named Rose). That feels like too much flower power for me. I do like the name Willow, too, and that one I would pair as a sibling name for Lily (if my Lily were to ever have a sister).

- Samantha on

I used to really really adore the name Lily, I thought it was so short and sweet. My mum actually considered naming me Willow, and I’m glad she didn’t its kind of pretentious sounding to me. Overall flower names are okay with me though most are too meek sounding for my taste; I think names a little bolder. I know a guy with a daughter named Acacia as well.

PS- Daisy Ryan has the funniest facial expression in that photo. All thugged out.

- Electra on

Jen

I really like the names Azaylia and Acacia, I’ve never heard of children named that but they are very pretty, feminine and uncommon names for girls without being too crazy in my opinion. I would probably have spelled it Azalea myself since it is already unique, but to each their own

- stedine on

I like more unusual flower/plant names like Amaryllis, Primrose, Aspen, Sequoia, etc.

Out of the ones mentioned my favorites are Poppy and Petal.

- Sanja on

I’ve always liked the name Lilly.

LOL @ Daisy pose and Electra’s comment! :-)

Daisy looks adorable! Too cute.

- Lola Marie on

I love flower names! In fact we named our daughter Dahlia Isadora.

- Sidney on

I wanted to name the baby I am carrying Rose sooo badly, but hubby vetoed it. I am not big on any other flower names though.

- Mary-Helen on

I have a Lilith, whom we call Lily, and an Ivy. My next girl (if we have one) will most likely have an herb/plant name. Belladonna Rose or Rosemary are the two front-runners.

- Melly K on

My name has botanical origins, and while it is becoming more popular here in the UK, I think it’s still very rare in the US.

I love flower names, although some are clearly not meant to be names! When I worked in Japan, lots of little girls had flower names in Japanese. Some work out better than the English!

- Bryony on

I love the name Lily, although I would spell it Lilly, but it has gotten too popular for me so I wouldn’t use it. Love Violet too.

I go through birth announcements for my blog (names4real) and I love seeing these flower names and I do see a lot of Rose’s as middle names. I have seen Poppy, Lotus, Azalia and Acacia, but I’ve yet to see a Tulip. Hopefully, it stays that way. I have seen a Bluebell, but it was her middle name.

- millikate on

u forgot about all the Violets! There’s also Jasmine, Poppy and Petal! =)

- nonmommy on

I love Lily, Poppy and Violet!

- Jenny on

Ya forgot Stephanie McMahon and Triple H’s daughter Aurora Rose!

- Caren on

Daisy Ryan is seriously too cute!

- Brianne on

I like flower names but only as middle names. For middle names I love Rose, Lily, Violet, and Tulip.

- Brooklyn on

i love the name rose but more for a middle name so my boyfriend and i decided on adelaide autumn rose for one of our girls

- abc on

We considered Willow, Poppy, Sierra, and Aspen, but ultimately went with Aloe Elise. It ended up being the perfect name for our sweet, calm baby girl.

- etoilebleu on

I love Jasmine, and its Spanish version, Jazmiín (which I´ll probably use if I have a daughter some day.

- cat on

Some of the floral names are really beautiful, but some seem too extraordinary. Remember when everyone flipped out about Apple? Suddenly, that doesn’t seem so odd a choice.

- M on

We named our daugther who just turned 2 Poppy Aoife Grace. No one in my family liked the name (raised in Texas) but everyone where we live (So. Cal) love the name as do my Husband’s family in Ireland. Our daughter has red hair and a happy personality so the name really ended up fitting her. We have a friend named Dahlia and one named Lily. I also know a Ruby Rose.

- PoppyKai on

i’m not really a fan of flower names but at least most of them sound normal!

P.S: millikate we got it you know! you have a blog and blablabla….

- daze on

I knew they’re not necessarily flower names, but my friend named her girls Ivy and Fearne (Fern). I personnaly ADORE both names, and suit the girls well. I have always loved the name Violet, too.

- Stacia on

I LOVE nature names in general. Some of my fav flower names are Betony, Camellia, Dahlia, Azalea, and Juniper!

- Katy on

My youngest daughter’s name is Isabel Rose. We call her Izzie Rose sometimes. I loved the way Rose flowed with her first name. I love Rose, Lily & Violet. They’re my three faves.

- Amy on

i tend to quite like flower names especially Lilly, Daisy, Poppy, i LOVE Poppy, so cute! some go too far to me and are not to my taste Bluebell, Petal etc and i’ve never been crazy about Rose. i’m not sure i would choose them for my kids but i can see how they’re pretty.

- JM on

I love both Ivy and Fern (husband vetoed both) but my last girl’s middle name is Olive…honestly no idea where that came from, and days later i was sure I’d change it but now it has grown on me and I absolutely love it. Another one I like that is botanical not floral is Hazel. Also what about Clementine…(I know again not floral but botanical)…

- mememememe on

Serious lola marie! She looks like she runs the playground. I could totally see her saying “give me your lunch” or something like that. Its cute! Don’t mess with daisy!

- Electra on

My husband and I have our one little girl now who’s name is Ariel Irene, but we’ve decided if our next one is a girl, we’re gonna go with an Aztec name since he’s first generation Mexican American. We thought “Xochitl” which is pronounced “Socheet” and means “flower” in the Aztec language.

- Robyn on

Daisy Ryan looks FANtastic in that pic, but c’mon Meg, transition lenses are rough. Ick. I’ve met a Juniper – she goes by June. I like a lot of these names, and really enjoy reading everyone’s posts on this topic. LOVE Tigerlily! What cool name!

- crimpe on

The only flower names I like are Lily and Rose. I like nature names tho. Saige (Sage) is beautiful. Willow is cute too, but I wouldn’t want anyone calling her “pussy” willow. Some people just name thier kids something they like without thinking ahead of the teasing they will endure. Bluebell is no doubt going to be called “blueballs” by high school boys. Lily, Rose, and Saige are my all time “plant” names.

- Amity on

my fav nature name is probably rain, if i ever have a daughter that will most likely be her name. i was actually suppost to be named lily.

- Tina. on

My name is Erika which is German for heather plant or flower.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erica
In Germany it’s spelled Erika (that’s what my grandparents from Germany tell me anyway).
I didn’t know that until recently, but my name was picked for it’s European spelling.

Out of flower names, I like Lily, Violet and Rose as a middle name. I don’t like the long unusual ones. Once I heard a parent call their daughter ‘Magnolia’ and I thought that was odd, but I guess it’s kind of pretty.

- Erika on

I once met a baby named Sarasvatya or something kooky like that, I think it was after a hindu goddess of literature, but as a nickname, her mom called her Flower. I thought that was the sweetest thing ever. And I bet they’re calling her Sara by now.

- Bird on

I love flower names :)
My faves are definitely Violet, Dahlia and Iris. I know a lot of Lily’s, Lilian’s etc., as well as Daisy’s, Rose’s and Jasmine’s. I also have a friend called Acacia, who loves her name.

- Charlie on

I love flower names, Hubby shot down my requests for our daughter to be Lily Kay. She’s an Ella instead. I have two friends who have daughters Ivy Rose and Sunshine Rose.

- Erin on

I like Aspen, Acacia and Jasmine. I like Lily, too, but with 1 ‘l’ and only Lily, not Lillith/Lillian/etc. I now sit for 3 different Lily’s. I don’t really like the other flower names myself. I nannied for a Rose, love the kid with all my heart, but not her name. An older friend of mine has a Valley and Fawn (both girls). I wish I coulda seen her in her hippie days!

- Sarah M. on

These names just sound so, don’t laugh, “natural”, I love them all, they just make me sigh & think if nature & femininity at it’s finest..Aloe is so unique & awesome sounding..

- Alesha on

Robyn, I went to college with a Xochitl! BEST name, totally suited her. Love it. She pronounced it “So-chee”.

- crimpe on

My daughter is 14 months and is a Lilly..(Lillian June to be exact) if we have another daughter i would really like to name her Magnolia and call her Maggie but my hubby isnt to fond of it

- beckycarter on

My favorite flower name by far is Poppy. I don’t know why but I just love it, and I love the flower.
I also love the names Rose (because of Titanic) and Lily (my great grandmothers name)
At first I didn’t like the name but I have really grown to love the name Tulip (as a middle name) also.
And Daisy has always been a favorite
I love nature names, Autumn is my favorite but I also love Ivy.
My friend has been determined to name her first daughter Azalea.

And then my favorites that havn’t been mentioned are
Clover,Daphne, and Zinnia

- Micheley on

I actually like the name poppy as well, but people would probably assume its a nickname.

- Electra on

I have a Camellia! She is a Month old yesterday. My Grandmother (who recently passed) grew Camellia plants and my husband and I purchaced our first home 4 months ago and there was a huge Camellia bush right outside the front door. We felt it was meant to be :)

All our kids will have “flower” names. Next up? Daisy :)

- MimiMommy on

I like Lily, Daisy, Iris and Violet. The only one I could ever see myself using is Lily.

- Jane on

I was named after the flower Alyssum. So that’s another flower name to consider. My cousin changed her name from Katherine to Lilian-Rose when she was 11. Took a bit of getting used to, but does seem to suit her better.

- Alyssa on

My husband and I chose the name Hazel Honey Lotus for our 15-month-old daughter because we both are avid nature lovers and we loved how it rolled off the tongue.

We also live in a very hippie friendly town so I hope know one worries about her getting teased :)

- Olexis on

my middle name is Rose and my dad wwanted it to be my first name while my mum wanted Lily..
I personally love flower names especially Iris!! followed by Lily.
I see Rose as a perfect middle name but for some reason I don’t like it as much as a first name. I also absolutely adore Willow!

- jessica on

I like flower names, especially Poppy, but I can’t help but think that Violet is just one letter away from being VIOLENT.

- Seraphina on

My fiance and I were seriously considering Dahlia (my grandmother’s name) for one of our twins-on-the-way but we decided Sylvia worked better with her middle name (Madeleine). If we ever have another girl (we’re up to 3 kids now so it’s a bit unlikely :P ) we’ll name her either Dahlia or Isolde (kinda irrelevant to the topic, but I just ADORE this name and it’s super rare…I just hope it never becomes popular!)

- Maria on

My best friend growing up is named Holly. Her younger sister is Lilly and her older sister is Rose. All flower names! I think Holly, Lilly, and Rose sound gorgeous together. Oh and I love most all the flower names.

- Angelia on

Rose for a middle name is sweet.

Not overly huge on the cutesy flower names although some are okay.

Really dislike Poppy. My little cousin calls her father that (although in spanish it’s Papi) and my neighbor uses that as his name for his grandchildren (Poppy)! So for me the name is ruined by other uses!

- JMO on

erika, seeing as you mentioned your name being german. you’re right it is but it’s the botanical name, ie not the name one would use every day nor really one that botanists use that much. the more common name and the one everyone knows for heather is Heidekraut. just thought you might like to know.
erika with a k is also not the “european” way of spelling it it’s just the german (possibly other languages too) way to of spelling it. in britain it is also spelt erica and britain is also part of europe. just thought i would point it out seeing as you seemed interested in the origin of your name.

- JM on

Since I don’t have kids but do have cats, I use all my favorite names on them. Currently, I have two torties named Lily Grace and Violet Anne! I love the flower names obviously!

- Alice on

My faves are Amaryllis, Rose, Iris and Jasmine.

- Sandra on

I will use Lilith in the future with the nickname of Lili. I love Poppy, Rose, Hazel, Violet, Azalea. Any other flower names really. :)

- Jessi on

JM- thanks for pointing that out. I did realize it was spelled Erica in England, although it is also Scandinavian which is also a part of Europe, and I wasn’t thinking so I just but European.

I don’t consider my name a flower so much, because as JM said it’s not what it’s usually called, but it always interested me to know it was a plant. There is a German song called Erika written about the flower but it’s an older song.

- Erika on

My daughter’s names are respectively Zoé and Violette (French obviously)and they are 15 and 10 years old. I always loved those two names and wanted to have girls one day so they could be nemed just that …So, very proud of thinking I had found some really unusual names there, it was the case … for a few years !!! Right after Zoé was born, a really popular show came on Tv and blew it .. then, Violette came along … and became just as popular as Zoé was a few years earlier !!! Gosh ! I’m soo avant-garde !!! LOL !

- Marie on

Marie–I love your daughters’ names! So pretty and feminine :)

- Hallie on

i’ve volunteered at a children’s art centre for a few years, and over that time i’ve seen lots of unique names, many flowery. i can’t get enough! for as long as i can remember i’ve loved the name clover, and i plan on naming my daughter that.
some names i’ve seen : amaryllis, lily, acacia, ivy, marigold, dahlia, daisy, iris, fleur, violet, primrose, yolanda, bryony, fern, holly. as for boys, i’ve seen basil, sage, silas/sylas, eldrige

- veronique on

I do love flower names- so very feminine yet strong with happy connotations! Though i much prefer the unusual names rather than Lily & Rose (which are pretty but way too common) Not previously mentioned ones include: Heather, Wisteria, Eglantine (french for wild rose), Jacinta (spanish for hyacinth), Fleur (classic, french for flower!), Marguerite (french for daisy), Blossom, Petal, Marigold, Miel (french for honey), Lilac, Delphine (french for delphinium), Peony, Primrose, Ivy…

flower names are sweet but we wouldn’t choose them for our daughters (we have 3 daughters & 4 sons) as they have traditional french & gaelic names with 2 family middle names each! But many of our animals have flower names! Willow is our favourite!

- IsabelleFrancoise on

My daughter’s name is Calla(like the Lily)I really like Ivy but I don’t want to be matchy,

- pixie on

I grew up near a family with 4 girls, Lavender, Daisy, Rose, and Holly. I did not choose a flower name for my daughter, Emmaline.

- jill on

If I have a girl….I plan to use the name Iris. I’m in love with that name. I noticed it hasn’t been mentioned much. Maybe it sounds too old fashioned? I know a few celebs have also used Iris for their kid’s names.

- alumnitx on

I didn’t realize Marguerite could be considered a flower name. I would name a daughter Peyton Margueritte. Peyton just because I like it. Margueritte because it was my grandmother’s middle name and she died in July ’07, not due to the flower connotation. It’s not my favorite name, but I’d like to honor my grandmother. I was very close with her and don’t like her first name (Iola).

- Sarah M. on

My 4 year old is named Iris. Whenever people hear it they are always saying how pretty it is. Beautiful and old fashioned. Best thing is that she’ll be the only one in her class with her name. Not like parents Sarah and Chris…

- Sarah on

My grandmother was Fuchsia Amelia. I used to think it was such a terrible name when I was growing up, but I am now considering it. It’s unusual and beautiful and can be shortened nicely to Sia. I think Sting has a daughter named Fuchsia.

- Lauren on

i love azalea, hyacinth, lotus, and fearne for girls, and basil and sage for boys.
the people who live in the apartment below me have twins with the middle names oak (boy) and maple (girl). the mother’s name is eucalyptus. the grandmother is willow. trees are quite the theme down there, but it suits them well.

- noam on

We named our 4mth old Daisy
My Hubby Family here in Germany loves that it sounds nice in both English and German :)

- Chloe on

Amaryllis Rose…now that’s a beautiful name. I didn’t really think I liked the flower type names but reading all the comments gave me new perspective.

- Christina on

My 2 year old’s name is Willow Rose… I love all the nature names.

- Sarah on

I have a niece named Lily-Rose. My sister actually copied the name from Johnny Depps daughter. At first it was a bit of a mouth full.(My sister does not like it shortened) but now it suits her well.
Flower names are very pretty.

- jen on

Fuschia is also a great character in the Gormenghast triology by Mervyn Peake. I think thats where Sting got it.

- mememememe on

I absolutely love floral, herbal, and nature type names. Have always loved Rose and used to want to use it for a first name, but now I like it better as a middle name instead. Lily is beautiful too, but it’s so darn popular these days! I’ve known several Lily’s/Lilly’s and know at least one girl who’se naming her daughter Lily.

Love the name Poppy. Such a beautiful, bright, cheerful flower. Also really like Daisy and Tulip (unusual, I know, but Tulips are such lovely flowers). And I love Willow and Violet! Sage is a great name too. I also think Ivy, Marigold, Peony, and Lilac are beautiful but I’m not sure I’d actually use them myself. Tigerlily has always been a guilty pleasure of mine but was always afraid my child would endure too much teasing if I used it.

To the mum who named her daughter Aloe! I love it. So beautiful and unique. Sounds very calm and soothing.

- Nickelle on

My one month is Ivy Blessing. I’m Holly, so we thought it appropriate to have a little Ivy!

- Holly on

I’m done having babies but I love flower names and wanted an unusual one for my puppy, so I chose Posy, which I remembered from a book I read as a kid. I’d always thought a pos(e)y was a kind of flower, but it’s actually a small bouquet of flowers, I found out when I looked it up. In any case, I love the name and it suits my little white terrier mix so well. I don’t think I’d use it for a child though.

Someone said they liked Acacia but hadn’t ever known of anyone with that name – there’s an Acacia who goes to school with my daughter and I think it’s very pretty.

- Tracie on

I’ve had Iris on my list of favorites for years. She was a messenger to the Greek gods and symbolized by the rainbow, if I remember my mythology correctly. Always liked the various flower names. I think Jonquil would be a lovely name. I am sure there are many more obscure flowers that could be used. A pity Pansy and Petunia have some negative baggage w/them. Primrose is pretty, Rose with a boost. If you are a fan of the late Blossom Dearie, their is a nice first or middle name.

- JemmaLu on

Funny, my middle name is Rose and I have always hated it…

- Mel on

I have two daughters: Rose-Marie and Lily Grace. I don’t anticipate anymore girls, or boys for that matter, but I also love Iris and Violet. I’ve always joked that if there ever was a third girl-she would be Daisy. Perhaps, someday this will be a dog or cat name.

- healthteacher on

I think there are a lot of great flower names, and as I said before, I love articles like these.

I was just going to add-that Stephen Moyer (Bill from True Blood) has a daughter name Lilac, which I think is pretty cool, could also use “Lily” for short.

- Mia on

I grew up near a family with 4 girls, Lavender, Daisy, Rose, and Holly. I did not choose a flower name for my daughter, Emmaline.

- web Gift on

I am 46 years old & my name is Violet. I have actually always liked my name & have only personally met one other. People are always telling me they know someone or have a relative named Violet. My father named me after a childhood friend of his. The only teasing I ever had was kids in school would sometimes call me “Purple”, which never bothered me.

I have a dear friend now that has 1-year old identical twin girls named Lily & Iris, they are simply adorable & their names fit them perfectly!
