As as kid I had to find courage to deal with my mother’s bipolar disorder. I often felt I was the mature one (even among the adult family members) who had to take action to keep things bearable at home and I often felt all alone as a result. At age 12 I sought and got help. I learned how to cope and not internalize something that was totally out of my control. My point here is no one really hears how bad it is for the kids.

My father was bipolar. It was terrible. When he was down he was emotionally abusive. I had to keep getting him out of trouble as a kid. nettrice, you are so right: no one talks about what happens to the kids. I’m an adult now with a little one of my own and I don’t know if I’ll ever fully get over what it was like growing up…
