Joan Cusack: 'I Don't Want to Be a Helicopter Parent'

Ron Smits/London Ent/Splash News Online

In the new Lifetime movie Acceptance, Joan Cusack portrays the mom of an overachieving high school student struggling to gain entry to the college of her choice. Her two children in real life — Dylan John, 12, and Miles, 9 — aren’t yet in high school, and Joan says she’s happy that college is far from their minds.

“I have friends that are going through that stuff,” the 46-year-old actress notes to TV Squad. “There are some parents whose kids are in grade school who do think about colleges, and fortunately, I don’t have that particular burden.”

As Dylan and Miles have gotten older Joan has gotten more selective in the roles she accepts, admitting that she is hesitant to stray too far from their “awesome” hometown of Chicago. “And I use that word ‘awesome’ because I have two young boys,” she says with a laugh. “It’s just one of those things where that’s the hard part about being in this business, is not living and working in the same place. So if I could [find a project that is local], it would be ideal.” Noting that “they’re just young for so long,” Joan goes on to add that parenting is “the most meaningful thing” in life.

“I don’t want to be a helicopter parent, but I want to be there and help them grow. I can work…I love working. And I think it’s good for your soul to work, and I want to work. But I also want to be able to be there to help them.”

The boys are Joan’s children with husband Dick Burke. Acceptance premiered on Saturday with an encore showing on Tuesday.

Laila Ali on How Curtis Jr. Changed Her Life

Former boxer and Dancing With the Stars alum Laila Ali, 31, and her sports broadcaster husband Curtis Conway, 38, talk to PEOPLE about welcoming son Curtis Jr. (also called CJ) on August 28, 2008.

Laila: Our relationship now is so different. We used to enjoy going to the movies and dinner, but now, having the baby, it’s easy to forget to take time for yourself.

Curtis: We can’t just get up and go. Our time outside of the house really has to be planned.

Laila: But we’re not missing anything. The only problem is, I’m tired all the time. So as soon as I get free time, I want to go to sleep.

Curtis: Laila is very attentive to him. He has a certain whine for one thing, a certain cry for another. She automatically picks up on what it is.

Laila: He is very feisty, and he knows what he wants. You don’t have to guess with him.

Curtis: I love getting on the floor with him. I love him slobbering over me. We wrestle.

Laila: I definitely want more kids. But I’m going to wait until my son is about 3 — so he can get me a diaper when I need one! When you have a child and commit to raising that child together, then there is nothing stronger than that.

Liev Schreiber Stays Close to Home for Sons

Ronn Torossian, 5W PR

Liev Schreiber has slowed the pace of his career considerably since welcoming sons Alexander ‘Sasha’ Pete, 2, and Samuel Kai, 8 months, but he’s quick to point out in a new interview with PARADE that he harbors no regrets. “I would love to do more [acting],” he says. “But with a two-year-old and a seven-month-old baby, it’s a hard time to leave them…You kind of want to stick around and see what happens.”

Unfortunately for the 41-year-old actor, the shutterbugs often have the same idea. Raising the boys in New York City has been a mixed blessing for Liev and partner Naomi Watts. “[It's] a great place to have fun, but it’s really a challenge,” he admits. “You want the kids to be able to go and walk outside into a green field in Central Park and chase butterflies, but that’s not the reality.”

“The paparazzi really make that difficult. If you want your kids to have some privacy and not be aware of being watched all the time, it takes a lot of work.”

For his latest role –in Taking Woodstock, opening Friday — Liev portrays a drag queen named Vilma, but from the sound of things he retired his wardrobe when filming wrapped. “Naomi was mortified, as were both my children,” he shares. “But I think that was part of the point. If I could be comfortable in drag as Vilma in front of my family, then anybody can.”

Caught Caring: Soles4Souls' Celebrity Shoe Auction

Celebrity Baby Blog – Caught Caring

As summer draws to a close, millions are preparing for the upcoming school year and that means back-to-school shopping is in full effect! Footwear is often high on that list, but for many underprivileged children and their parents, new shoes are viewed as a luxury — not a necessity. Soles4Souls, an international charity which provides free footwear to those in need, is working hard to eliminate that statistic.

To that end, it has partnered with the Opry Mills Mall in Nashville, Tenn. for a “Shoes4School” shoe drive, whereby shoppers who donate a new pair of shoes receive a coupon book to use at the mall. If you’re not a local but still want to contribute, you’re in luck. Some familiar CBB faces — like Ashlee Simpson-Wentz, mom to 9-month-old Bronx Mowgli, and Amy Grant and Vince Gill, parents to 8-year-old Corrina – have contributed autographed shoes for an auction running now through August 31.

Amy offers up a bold pair of knee-high leather boots by Yves Saint Laurent in size 8, while Ashlee contributed a more demure pair of size 6 Tory Burch green ballet flats. Bidding begins at just $25!

Jen Lowery/Startraks

In the Appalachia Mountain region of the United States, various Indian reservations, domestic abuse shelters, inner-city hospitals, homeless shelters and in the wake of national disasters like Hurricane Katrina, Soles4Souls is a strong presence.

It also provides two pair of shoes for up to 6,000 children who attend one of 140 camps in the United States that focus on abused and neglected children.

Their work isn’t limited to American shores, however, for Soles4Souls — a recipient of The Independent Charities Seal of Excellence — has provided assistance to more than 60 countries around the globe.

In addition to Corrina, Amy is mom to Matthew Garrison, 22, Gloria ‘Millie’ Mills, 20, and Sarah Cannon, 17, with ex-husband Gary Chapman, while Vince is dad to Jennifer Jerene, 27, with ex-wife Janis Oliver.
