Kyle MacLachlan Embraces Short-Order Cook Syndrome

Splash News Online

In the latest installment of ”My Day on a Plate” for Gourmet, actor and avid home chef Kyle MacLachlan makes it abundantly clear that life really is all about baby — in the kitchen, at least! “Everything food-wise for me is focused on my [1-year-old] son Callum [Lyon],” Kyle happily concedes. “I’m like a short-order cook!”

The column has subjects identify everything they ate, drank and prepared over a 24-hour period, and in the case of Kyle and Callum — who turned 1 on July 25 — the answers are downright delicious! Kyle notes that he recently purchased a double boiler which he’s been using to experiment with scrambled eggs “because babies need good protein and full fat.” In his effort to keep Callum happy, healthy, and well-fed, Kyle says his own food preferences have become secondary.

“Every morning I have to come up with a menu for him — is it going to be oatmeal or muesli or toast with a little bit of yogurt on it? So I’m really just an afterthought.”

Lunch for dad on the day in question consisted of fresh peaches from Whole Foods, which he then used to make a peach purée for baby boy. The following day, the midday menu consisted of a parsnip-carrot-potato medley with spinach and cheese. For dinner Kyle, 50, roasted some root vegetables and prepared a cherry-tomato sauté with garlic, cream, basil and chicken stock, which he then puréed and tossed with noodles. “He couldn’t get it into his mouth fast enough,” the proud papa reports. “It’s amazing to think of the nutritional responsibility you have in cooking for a kid, which then makes you wonder if you’re getting enough yourself,” he goes on to note.

“That’s the thing I’m finding with cooking for Callum — it’s not so inspiring to cook for oneself, but it’s inspiring to cook for someone else…It’s been a real mind expander.”

Callum is Kyle’s son with wife Desiree Gruber.

Kimora Lee Simmons Says Kenzo is a 'Good, Calm Baby'

Thos Robinson/Getty

After giving birth to baby boy Kenzo just nine weeks ago, Kimora Lee Simmons is already back on her feet and cutting down her post-pregnancy weight with the help of a few famous friends. “Tyra [Banks] came over and yelled at me this weekend about eating too many carbs,” Kimora told Celebrity Baby Blog at the JCPenney‘s Manhattan store opening Friday, which sponsored the Children’s Aid Society. “So I’m trying to have a better lifestyle.”

After junk food cravings during her pregnancy — pizza especially — Kimora is now finding ways to get back on a healthier track.

“I’m trying to think better about my choices in what I eat. But I can’t really diet, I’m not disciplined enough. This is why I look a little wide. But it’s okay! Women of all shapes and sizes, that’s what it’s all about with Fabulosity.”

Kimora, 34, who unveiled her self-proclaimed “baby” of another kind July 31st with the launch of her Fabulosity line for JCPenney, calls Kenzo a “good, calm baby,” a welcome contrast to her busy lifestyle. Kenzo, according to Kimora, means “third” and “wise” – the latter of which she says he gets from his papa, longtime boyfriend Djimon Hounsou.

About how she’s been trying to lose her post-pregnancy weight this time around?

“Breastfeeding really helps, and sometimes I hit the treadmill with Djimon, but I’ve only done that four times.”

She also gets much-needed assistance from two helpers of her own — daughters Aoki Lee, 6 ½, and Ming Lee, 9 ½, from her previous marriage with music mogul Russell Simmons. “They’re like little mommies,” Kimora says.

“They change the diapers, they push strollers, and when I take him into their room to tuck them in at night, they want him to get into the bed too.”

Kelly Rutherford: Motherhood is 'Easier' the Second Time Around

Fame

A day on the job often provides fathers-to-be a temporary respite from the ever-changing emotions of an expectant mama. For Gossip Girl actor Matthew Settle, however, there was no escaping the pregnancy hormones! “He was dealing with two pregnant women at the same time, one at work and one at home,” the actor’s co-star Kelly Rutherford tells Celebrity Baby Blog. “It was funny for awhile…but it will be a little easier now.”

Fortunately, Kelly — and the props department — were too busy concentrating on concealing her growing baby bump from the camera to focus on much else. “Bigger handbags and jewelry,” she reveals. “And the bags kept getting bigger and bigger and we used big jewelry to distract viewers.” While the task of keeping her belly under wraps was uncharted waters for Kelly, things quickly fell into place when it came time to welcome her second child, daughter Helena Grace, 8 weeks.

“It was a little easier this time. I knew what to expect a little bit. I’m sleep walking, basically.”

Completely elated with motherhood — the 40-year-old actress is also mom to Hermés Gustaf Daniel, 2 ½ — Kelly refuses to focus on regaining her figure, and instead is intent on spending time with her children. “I haven’t put pressure on myself to get back in shape,” she explains, before adding that the dessert menu is always worth a glance. “I think nursing helps and just running around and being a full-time mom. My son starts preschool in September, so I’ll probably start yoga while he’s in school.”

Hermés and Helena are Kelly’s kids with estranged husband Daniel Giersch. Matthew and his wife Naama Nativ are parents to daughter Aven Angelica, 5 months this week.

Aoki Lee Simmons: A (Mini!) Superstar

Diane Cohen/Fame

Strike a pose! While attending QVC’s Super Saturday Live on August 1st, Aoki Lee, 7 this month, didn’t let the flashing cameras faze her in the least, playfully strutting her stuff with dad Russell Simmons‘ gal pal Julie Henderson.

Also in attendance? Ming Lee, 9 ½, who was more than happy to let her sister steal the spotlight! According to Russell, more often than not, that is the case. “[Aoki] loves the stage,” he recently said. “[Ming] is a little more shy, more of an artist.”

The girls are Russell’s children with ex-wife Kimora Lee Simmons.
