Uma Thurman Urges Moms to Make Time for Themselves

Andrew H. Walker/Getty

Many moms find themselves in need of a break, but Uma Thurman says that several years ago she found herself contemplating one — on doctor’s orders! “He said, ‘I’m going to write you a prescription,’ and I went OK, what’s he giving me a prescription for?,” she recalls in a new interview with The Times. “And he wrote down on the pad: ‘‘Hotel: one night a week.’” She never followed through, in part because the 39-year-old actress says she found the idea of curling up alone in a hotel room with her books “unthinkable.”

Uma has since reconsidered her stance, however! “When my son turned 7, I sort of stood up straight and I suddenly realized I had been like this [makes expansive gesture of exhaustion], in one way or the other, for the past 10 years,” she notes.

“My big wish now is to make a little time for myself. I think many women, working women, get this. I mean how do you justify that hour and a half to yourself? When you have this to do and that to do and you want to be there…So I really want to do that. I really think it’s necessary.”

Uma feels that motherhood is about “the chaos and the confusion, and also the loss of yourself.” Not that the latter is a bad thing; “There is a good part to losing yourself,” she notes. “Any mother that doesn’t give herself up isn’t a good mother.” At the same time, however, Uma cautions that “you can get to a point where you can’t reach the identity that helped you be stable in the first place — and that is quite a frightening feeling.”

“I must have gone through years of it. Just years of confusion. Guilty when you’re here and guilty when you’re there, of being torn in half. Your happiness depends on where you measure in your sense of duty: what’s your shame level today? What have you forgotten, what did you do wrong, what could you do better?”

Uma is mom to Maya Ray, 11, and Levon Roan, 7 ½, with ex-husband Ethan Hawke. Her new movie Motherhood opens in October.

Brad Pitt Opens Up About His 'Real Fear' For His Family

Limelight

Despite his late start into the world of parenthood, Brad Pitt never doubted he would one day be a father. First on the actor’s agenda, however, was to experience life on his own. “When I go down a path, I take it to the end. Then I take another one,” he tells PARADE. “I took the path of not having kids — now it’s time for family.” While children were not something he was initially seeking, Brad has now happily settled into the routine.

“Children are a dominant value in my life now, and they weren’t before. They were always something I thought I’d get around to having when the time was right. In a way, I think I had to go and exhaust me before I could be good at being a parent.”

Although thrilled to be a father, the addition of a family has not come without a price. When partner Angelina Jolie‘s mother passed away in 2007, Brad was suddenly faced with the reality of losing a loved one. “You have to recognize real love when it’s there and know that in going after it, there is always a risk,” he notes. “To live with love, you have to chance losing it. That’s also true when you decide to have kids.”

To that end, as each year passes, Brad finds himself appreciating quality time spent together as a family more and more. “As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become aware that time is fleeting. I don’t want to waste whatever I have left,” he muses.

“My real fear at this point is the safety and health of Angie and the kids. The fear of losing them is what keeps me up at night.”

That said, Brad believes he wasn’t past his prime to start a family. “I don’t think I was all that late in becoming a father,” he says. The proud papa laughs that he still has a few tricks up his sleeve and is always on hand to comfort his children. “Man, you just have to stay alert in case one of them has a problem, and then you need to find things to calm them down,” he explains.

“I’ve discovered that classical music works as a great pacifier.”

While Brad and Angelina are far off from having a quiet household, the couple wouldn’t change their happy chaos for the world. “This family is full of life!” he gushes. “There are laughs, aggravations, irritations, but at the end of the day, it’s fun.” For the father of six, he says he is exactly where he wants to be. “I think this is the pinnacle. Even as I’m bound to this thing, in a way I’m freer than I’ve ever been.”

Brad and Angie are parents to Maddox Chivan, 8, Pax Thien, 5 ½, Zahara Marley, 4 ½, Shiloh Nouvel, 3, and 1-year-old fraternal twins Knox Léon and Vivienne Marcheline.

Tisha Campbell-Martin Makes the Most of Her Final Pregnancy

Jeff Vespa/WireImage

Pregnancy the second time around is proving to be bittersweet for Tisha Campbell-Martin. Making the most of each moment as she is fairly certain this will be her last baby, the actress says she is faring far better than she did when she was expecting her first child eight years ago. “I was on bed rest the entire time … it was rough,” she tells Celebrity Baby Blog.

While baby-on-the-way — a boy — seems to be giving the expectant mama little trouble other than the occasional reminder that he is “looking for the exit,” Tisha is prepared for any bumps in the road — including a few bouts of morning sickness — and is taking them all in stride. “I’m enjoying it. I’m 40, and having a baby!” she says.

“Every moment, every nauseous moment, everything that is good and not so good about being pregnant, I’m enjoying.”

Despite their initial hopes for many children, Tisha and her husband Duane Martin have opted to focus the last few years solely on their first born, Xen, 8, who had been diagnosed with autism. “We really wanted to wait as long as possible,” she explains. “I don’t want to say [Xen has] grown out of it, but no one knows.” His challenges don’t faze Tisha, who says that she constantly gives thanks for her son. “Every day I celebrate that boy. He’s one of the strongest, most amazing kids.”

To that end, the couple have already began to encourage a nurturing relationship between the siblings as they prepare Xen for his new role as big brother. “One of the key things with Xen was making sure he had ownership with what was going on,” she says. For the family, that meant referring to baby as belonging to him and consistently reassuring their son that the little one would soon be joining their household. According to the actress the plan worked — so much so that Xen eagerly awaits the day where he will no longer be the only child!

“He loves my stomach and he talks to the baby. He can’t wait. He says, ‘I don’t want to be the only child anymore. I want my baby out of your belly soon.’”

As for her role on Rita Rocks, she jokes that the show has been busy in the baby bump department; Costar Nicole Sullivan is due with her second son on August 25th, while Tisha expects her baby boy on September 21st. With two pregnant women on set, all are scrambling to squeeze in the last-minute shooting schedules! “We’re like, ‘I’m tired,’” Tisha laughs, adding that she plans to return to the show two weeks after baby boy is born.

“I love work. I love sitcoms. It’s more work being at home. And the babies get to come with us. We don’t miss a beat.”

Rebecca Romijn Recruits Jerry O'Connell As Mr. Mom

Sam Sharma/Pacific Coast News

As Rebecca Romijn plays witch by day — she is currently promoting her new fall series, Eastwick — and mother by night, her husband Jerry O’Connell has happily stepped up to the plate in his own new role: Mr. Mom.

With the couple welcoming their fraternal twin daughters Charlie Tamara Tulip and Dolly Rebecca Rose seven months ago, and the actress filming the pilot shortly after their birth, the girls were brought along for the ride. “They were with me every second of the day,” Rebecca reveals. “I was still nursing and I was on a real strict schedule with them.”

Now prepared to begin regular filming on her series, Rebecca says that Jerry has taken a hiatus from his own career to take care of the girls. “Now that we’ve gone back to work, Jerry has taken off” the last three weeks, she says. “So he can be the parent [on] diaper duty!”

For Jerry, the past few days of quality time with his daughters have not been well spent – given that the girls are in full teething mode. “They’re both in pain,” says their mother. “Their teeth are about to cut through.”

As the twins work on their latest milestone, the playful mama can’t help but laugh when prompted about old family teething remedies.

“Whiskey and brown sugar, right? Just like grandma used to do!”

Joking aside, the first-time mama admits she has turned to her own mother for parenting advice, as she recalls a sudden moment of truth when she was eight months pregnant with the girls. After assembling their cradles and observing the “plush and soft” bedding, a very “uncomfortable” Rebecca envisioned herself catching a quick nap in the beds!

“I was setting it all up and thought, ‘Oh, that looks so cozy. I want to crawl in there myself.’ My mom said, ‘Get ready. You’re about to have a lot of other mother moments like that.’”
