Win Softlips "Lip Service" Package! (A $260 Value)

According to the National Skincare Foundation, 63 percent of sunscreen users don’t protect their lips.  Experts say the lips lack the same amount of melanin found in the rest of our skin, so there is less-natural protection against the environmental elements. The skin on the lips is also super thin and fragile, making caring for them on a regular basis very important.

Softlips wants to make sure your lips are protected this summer that’s why one lucky winner will receive a one year supply of Softlips Lip Balms with SPF 20 in Vanilla, Cherry, Strawberry, Raspberry with Green Tea, and two limited edition summer flavors Peach Mango and Coconut Cream as well as Softlips Tinted Lip Conditioners with SPF 15 in Rose, Bronze and Pearl and new Softlips PURE in pomegranate and honeydew, a Dooney & Bourke makeup tote and a $100 American Express Gift Card to really make you smile! Softlips lip conditioners are perfect to stick in your pocket or beach bag and can help protect lips from the harsh summer weather elements while offering great moisturizing properties at the same time!

Plus visit www.softlips.com to enter the fourth annual Softlips® “Picture Perfect Lips” lip model search, which ends December 31, 2009.

Martina McBride: Touring Less for Family's Sake

Kevin Winter/Getty

As Martina McBride‘s three daughters have gotten older, the country singer says balancing work and family has gotten harder — not easier. When the girls were younger, it was easy to bring them on the road as mom would tour in support of her country music career; Now that older daughters Delaney Katharine, 14, and Emma Justine, 11,  are entering their formative years things have gotten complicated, however! “For instance, this weekend, the two older ones will stay home because they have volleyball tryouts and the freshman retreat and different things that they have to do for school,” she explains.

“So, as their school life becomes more and more important and they become more involved, it’s harder for us to get out and tour definitely.”

Whether they’re at home or on the road, Martina, 43, says that when they’re able, eating dinner together remains a priority. The family of five — which includes Martina’s husband John McBride and Ava Rose Kathleen, 4 — “really love to be together,” she says. “I was just noticing last night we sat down to dinner and we were all talking and my 4-year-old started telling a story while one of the other girls was telling a story,” Martina recalls. “And I told her, ‘Just wait a minute; it’s not your turn.’”

“So, she waited and then after the story was finished, she said, ‘Is it my turn?’ Really, my kids are very able to carry on a conversation in any kind of situation, and I feel like a lot of that comes from sitting down as a family and really connecting in that way every day.”

Martina’s 10th studio album, Shine, is available now.

Cardboard Toys: Kids' Favorites Gone All Fabulous

Palace

Everyone knows that a kid’s favorite toy is a big, cardboard box. Our trip to the 2009 Toy Fair this past February showed that several companies are taking the concept farther and designing elaborate, chic and cool cardboard toys. They ship flat (in more cardboard!), they’re made from recycled materials and the prices range from $7-77. We know that any parent with a refrigerator box and a pair of scissors can become a hero in four minutes flat, but when we see a trend we have to tell you about it! We’ve found each of these to be surprisingly durable. My two energetic boys have been playing with them for months and they’re all still going strong.

Here are our favorites:

– Kristen, NJ mama to energetic 1 and 4 year old boys, loves hot designer goods (but appreciates a good bargain even more) and believes strollers should come with cup holders and toys should have volume controls

Elizabeth Mitchell on Motherhood: Better To Be a Parent, Not a Friend

Steve Granitz/WireImage

As her future on the hit show Lost was recently put into question with the season finale’s cliffhanger, Elizabeth Mitchell has turned her attention to ABC’s new pilot V, in which she plays a Homeland Security agent whose son is being used as a pawn by aliens. Fortunately, actress — a mother herself in real life to Christopher ‘C.J.’ Joseph, 4 next month — was able to easily relate to her character’s desire to protect her child. “They say that when you have a child, for the rest of your life your heart walks around outside of your body,” she tells Celebrity Baby Blog.

“I don’t think you really experience that until you see it, until you have it. I feel that way with my son. He walks around and I’m like [gasps]. I don’t do that with him because I want him to be strong and vibrant and happy, but in my mind I’m the worst case scenario mom.”

While Elizabeth, 39, would love nothing more than to “gather him up and keep him close,” the doting mom was recently made well-aware of the fact that her son is growing wise beyond his years. Following a recent argument with her husband Chris Soldevilla — who has “put everything on hold” to run the household — she approached C.J. to talk about the situation, only to be caught off guard by the boy’s response! “I said, ‘Sweetie, do you know whose fault that was?’ — and I thought that he was going to say his own, but he said, ‘Well, Daddy’s, obviously,’” she recalls.

“I was like, ‘No, bubba. It was Mommy and Daddy’s together and not yours.’ He goes, ‘Well, that’s weird.’”

Calling kids simply “amazing,” Elizabeth reveals that the best advice concerning parenthood was given to her by her own mother. “She always said that it’s better to be a mother than a kind of friend, but to listen to every single thing that they say because they pick up on everything,” she states.

The season premiere of V airs Tuesday, November 3rd at 8 p.m. on ABC.

Patricia Heaton On Her Relatable New Role

David Livingston/Getty

Patricia Heaton is poised for a return to the small screen in the upcoming ABC sitcom The Middle, and like her character in Everybody Loves Raymond she’ll again be playing a mom. “I relate to every single thing,” the 51-year-old actress and mom-of-four tells Entertainment Tonight. “This is a very comfortable character for me to be in.”

Case in point? In one scene, Patricia is depicted putting breakfast together in a hurry by microwaving pancakes for her children. It is a frenzied state of being she recalls all too well. “I don’t do it so much anymore, but when the kids were little and I was working a lot, that was totally me,” she admits. “Although we did, like, toaster waffles more.” Her revelation — and her new character — is something she hopes other women will also relate to.

“Moms [are] feeling harassed in having to do everything, do everything really quickly and always feeling inadequate because everything you see on TV, in the magazines, is how you are supposed to prepare everything, and it’s supposed to be fresh and organic. You just don’t have time for it, and you are exhausted. It’s exactly what we all go through.”

Patricia and her husband of 19 years David Hunt are parents to Sam, turning 16 next month, John Basil, 14, Joseph Charles, 12, and Daniel Patrick, 10 ½.

The Middle premieres Wednesday, September 30 at 8:30 p.m. on ABC.
