Shutterfly Photo Book: A Beautiful Book For Baby's First Year (and Beyond!)

08/27/2009 at 10:00 AM ET

The birth of my son brought out in me a sudden zeal to become an amateur photographer. But hundreds (upon hundreds!) of snapshots later, I never got any closer to creating that album of Travis’s first year – until I got some help from Shutterfly’s Photo Book system (prices begin at $12.99 for a 5×7 size, 20-page book).

After picking out the album size (there are five to choose from) and cover material, Shutterfly’s Storyboard tool helped me drag and drop my uploaded photos onto each page and added text underneath each picture to tell a story. Then the real fun begins. You can customize everything from the photo book material and color, the photo border to the background style for each page. With hundreds of styles and colors to choose, any parent is bound to find a style to suit their taste.

And while it took some time to sift through the many choices — should I go with circles or country snowfall as a background? — it was a fun process. If I were to change anything, I would go with matte paper stock (but glossy stock is the pre-offered choice). But that’s a minor detail that did nothing to diminish the “wow” factor when the book arrived. Everyone from my husband to our families and friends (and even Travis himself!) loved thumbing through the photos. Sure, memories can live forever — but bound between the pages of a handsome photo book, our memories of Travis, year one, are now a cherished keepsake.

I’ve made several Shutterfly books for family members and they are a great deal! It was fun to make, even though they could use a few more background options. I’ve also created other items they sell and I’ve been pleased with it all! They’re always running promotions, so if you sign up to get emails from them, you can get lots of great deals. I’ve received 2 FREE books from them! This is definitely something worth checking out!

I have done 4 of these. I love them. A few times a year shutterfly will even send out codes for free 8X8 books.

There was a deal for a free one that just ended yesterday. I just got on this bandwagon- I’m doing one for my sons for each year.

These books are the best! We have a couple with family pictures and my kids pick them for bedtime stories! They love looking at the pictures of themselves and their cousins. It’s a great way to make your kids feel really special and keep them familiar with family that might be far away. Worth every penny for sure.

I love this idea, I’ve never heard of this before but I got a book for last xmas with pictures of my niece and nephews all year round…it was so so cute I loved it so much.

I am planning to sign up for the deals and see if I can make one for my daughter!! 🙂

I have made many, many photo books and Shutterfly is great for inexpensive books. But, if want true keepsakes that will stand the test of time, you need to try Same concept except with a few key differences: higher quality paper, stronger binding and thicker covers. I use Shutterfly to make books for my kids to look at and then HM for my personal keepsake books (baby, weddding, vacations, etc). HM offers many specials and deals–just search for a local consultant in your area and she will have a list of specials (and no, I don’t work for the company) 🙂

I love these books! I just made made my second one. I have gotten both of the books for free with codes from shutterfly! They turn out great but it took me forever to finish it! I have take literally over 2,000 pics since my daughter was born 5 months ago (thank goodness for digital cameras!) and picking out pics to use was hard! They have layouts for more 5+ photos per page. I used one with like 12 or something for pics with all of my family members holding her. They were smaller but I got them all on one page:) I recommend these books! They would make gifts for the grandparents!

How do you get one of the codes for a free book??? I make photo books for every occasion – and give them as gifts too – I LOVE THEM!!! I made one recently after my dad passed away – the photo book only has pictures of my dad and my infant son – it’s a tear jerker – and will be treasured for the rest of my life.

I have made several books that I use as a catalog for my business and they are always met with awe that I was able to create such a professional looking book. I just finished a hard cover book for my son and his wife for an anniversary present I can just imagine their delight when they open it. I would never go anywhere else for my picture needs.

I found the code for a free book on the shutterfly home page by chance one day and then the 2nd one I received an email for members only with another free code!

I did a few Shutterfly after my wedding in ’02 and liked the book, but found a site I’ve used for my 3 children here on CBB that I like even better: How Fast They Grow, which just changed their name to How Fast Time Flies ( I like the designs best, the quality and that you order pages individually, like scrapbooking. It’s great to have so many options now for digital photos!

My favorite digital scrapbooking/publishing company is The pages in the books are stitched together (not glued) and you have complete design control with over 40,000 pieces of artwork to use! Plus they have templates if you’re not very creative. They also have calendars, invites, announcements, printed canvases, playing cards and tons more!!
