Leslie Mann Recalls Daughter's Vacuum Protest

Kevin Winter/Getty

From the outside world, looks can be deceiving, says Leslie Mann. The wife of writer-director Judd Apatow and mother of Maude, 11, and Iris, 6, the actress admits that while it may seem she has a handle on her family, at times she is left searching for a bit of guidance. “Don’t assume I have everything figured out…I get as confused about life as everybody, and sometimes I think I’m just hurtling through the world without a plan at all,” she tells USA WEEKEND.

For Leslie, that constant quest to seek all the right answers is noticeably present as she navigates her way through motherhood. “The rules are completely different now than when I was a kid, and it’s hard to know what’s right,” she says.

Noting that parents once held much more authority over their children, Leslie finds herself taken aback by some of her daughters’ quick responses. “I once told my daughter Maude that I read in this book that when you’re seven, you can start doing chores like vacuuming,” she recalls.

“She said, ‘Oh yeah? When I turn seven, I’m gonna vacuum up that book.’”

Leslie’s new movie Funny People — written, co-produced, and directed by Judd with appearances by both of their girls — is now in theaters.

LOL! That’s pretty funny! Maude definitely has her parents’ wit!

But I find it sad about parents not holding as much authority over their children as they used to… I think a lot of parents feel that way, but it doesn’t have to be like that! And it shouldn’t be like that! Kids need authority and discipline.

Omg that is such a funny and quick witted response!

That brings the LOLs. Her girls are cute.

That’s hilarious…that made my day.
Can I say it again? I think Maude and Iris are the most delightful names EVER. So cute.

Geez Lis have you ever made a comment that isn’t negative? If everything on this site makes you so sad why do you come here??

- Rose on

Because I like to share my thoughts and opinions. Afterall, isn’t that what a blog is for? :)

Maude seems like she’s a bit of a handful, lol. In one of the Funny People podcasts on itunes the little one Iris was chewing gum in a take, so she had to be chewing gum in all of the takes. But it was Maude’s gum and she didn’t want her little sister chewing it. So she refused to tell them where the gum was and they had the grips and stuff looking for it. Definitely sounds like something my nieces would do, sibling rivalry is the worse.

Loving the name Maude! Beautiful girls too.

I agree that parents don’t have much authority over their children any more. What Maude said is funny, but if I had said that in my day to my mother, it would have been considered sassing my mother, not making a joke.

I’m willing to blame a LOT of this kind of behavior on kids watching shows like Hannah Montana and iCarly. *sigh*

I completely agree that while the comment is funny, it’s ultimately talking back to her mother and really should not be tolerated (unless, by some chance, she said it in a joking way while going over and getting the vaccuum and doing what she was told, but that doesn’t seem to be the case). If this sort of thing is allowed at home, it’s done at school…I’m a 1st grade teacher and you wouldn’t believe the things kids say nowadays. And then they wonder why they get in trouble for it! I’m worried…

I just want to point out that Leslie never said that she didn’t discpline Iris after the incident if indeed she said the comment innaproprietly.

Oh my goddness…it sounds like a joke to me, and a funny one! You have to remember that her parents are both very funny people and they probably have a very fun house! Get a sense of humor people!
