Sarah Michelle Gellar: Short and Sweet!

Limelight

Out and about in Santa Monica, Calif., on Friday, Sarah Michelle Gellar didn’t let a growing belly stop her from sporting a pair of short shorts (or wedges)!

The expectant actress — who balanced out her look with a flowing cream-colored top — and her gal pal reportedly spent the day shopping. Perhaps they were browsing for baby gear?

Due this fall, baby-on-the-way will be the first for the 32-year-old and her husband of six years, actor Freddie Prinze Jr.

Vera Farmiga Recalls 'Desperation' for Motherhood

Byron Purvis/AdMedia

Life on the farm continues to suit Vera Farmiga and family just fine. In a new interview with PARADE, the 35-year-old Orphan star says that the upstate New York home she shares with husband Renn Hawkey and the couple’s 6 ½-month-old son Fynn gives her a “great perspective.”

Noting that Renn — a musician and woodworker — made Fynn’s crib by hand, Vera goes on to share that when she signed on for the film she was “desperately trying to get pregnant and wanting to be a mother.” In researching the role, Vera found herself perusing grief Web sites where women detail the emotional aftermath of a miscarriage.

“You realize what it takes to put back the pieces of a broken heart after experiencing that. It was eye-opening to feel their ache, and you desperately hope it’s something you won’t experience.”

Shortly after the film wrapped, Vera welcomed Fynn via emergency c-section. “There were no complications,” she explains, “so I was thankful for that.”

A byproduct of a large family herself, Vera says that her mom has been an excellent role model. “I’ve sort of been studying her my whole life so I knew what to expect,” she says before adding,

“But the funny part is, since having my son Fynn, I don’t remember what life was like before parenthood.”

Orphan is in theaters now.

Teri Hatcher Encourages Emerson to be Independent

Bauer Griffin

For Desperate Housewives star Teri Hatcher, 44, the mark of a good parent is a child who can stand alone. “I believe in the philosophy that your best job as a parent is to create a child who has the wherewithal and the strength and the confidence to do without you really,” she tells Celebrity Baby Blog. “That’s what you want to bring into society, a motivated, passionate, compassionate individual.”

Although it may “go against your…desire to smother them and keep them close,” Teri says that in the end learning to keep a distance has been the key to the strong bond she shares with daughter Emerson Rose, 11 ½.

“I think everything about our adventures together and our relationship over the years has always been a good balance of, ‘I’m here for you but you can do it yourself.’”

Case in point? Speaking from Comic-Con last week, Teri revealed that she could only stay in San Diego for a few hours, for Emerson was returning home from a two-week summer camp later that afternoon. “You write letters and I think in her letters she definitely expressed the right amount of, ‘I’m doing my own thing but I miss home, too,’ ” Teri said. “That’s a good blend, a reasonable blend. She’s a good kid.”

It’s also important to lead by example in good times and in bad, Teri said before adding,

“[I use myself] as a role model when I make mistakes…How does a person pick themselves up from making mistakes or how does a person be courageous and adventurous and find joy so that they’re somewhat of a role model? So we’re in a good place, a very good place. I’m proud of all her advancements.”

Emerson is Teri’s daughter with ex-husband Jon Tenney.

Toni Collette Views Work Differently Since Becoming a Mom

Fame

With United States of Tara, Toni Collette found the perfect balance between work and family — a role she loves and a schedule that suits 18-month-old Sage Florence, her daughter with husband Dave Galafassi. Of filming the first season, she says, “Even though I was beyond exhausted — I was breastfeeding and had a little person living off my body — I was always excited to wake up and go to work.”

Still, now that Sage is older, Toni admits in a new interview with the Sydney Morning Herald she is unsure “how it will work” as she prepares to shoot the second season in Los Angeles.

“I was still breastfeeding last time, so we would all go to work together. They would go off and have little adventures during the day but she was kind of dependent on my breasts.”

Plans to make Sage a big sister are unresolved. “I think about it,” Toni concedes. “I am pretty happy with my one gorgeous little person at the moment. I am just enjoying her and enjoying this time.” To that end, the 36-year-old actress says it’s hard to remember a time when Sage wasn’t in her life, noting, “it’s kind of like she has always been here…and yet she is so brand new.”

“For me, I think the biggest thing about having a child is realizing the depth of feeling that a human being is capable of. I think, inherently, actors feel like you are for hire and it could all go away. But now I don’t take jobs for the sake of taking a job. Unless I completely love something I wouldn’t touch it. I would rather spend time with my daughter.”

One thing is for certain: Wherever Toni is, Sage and Dave won’t be far behind! “We move as a unit, we go everywhere together,” she explains. “Surely the joy of being part of a family is the day-to-dayness.”

The second season of United States of Tara will air on Showtime in early 2010.

Mary Lynn Rajskub's Belated Birthday Plans for Valentine

Gilbert Flores/Celebrity Photo

Actress Mary Lynn Rajskub has a mover and a shaker on her hands! The 38-year-old 24 star tells Celebrity Baby Blog that son Valentine Anthony is a walker — and he doesn’t let anything, or anyone, stand in his way. “When I try to give him a kiss, he just elbows me out of the way because he’s got a lot of stuff to do,” she explains. “When he was born into this world, he was on a mission…And I respect that.”

The comments came during Comic-Con in San Diego on Friday — Valentine’s first birthday. Although work commitments took her away from baby boy on his big day, Mary Lynn had big plans to celebrate upon her return home! She adds,

“We are going to party all weekend long. He likes to party. We are all going to take off our diapers and throw them around.”

Joking that Valentine’s latest milestone is “moving furniture,” Mary Lynn credits “chasing around the baby” for her amazing return to pre-baby size along with “working out, eating right and being happy.” The changes have been more than physical, however. “You think that you’ve had worries in your life, you think you’ve had responsibilities, and there is nothing that even compares to being responsible for a living being,” she notes. “It’s a monumental change.”

“Then again, things are normal. You’re still who you are so your life doesn’t revolve around this little being, but it changes. It becomes the biggest part of your life.”

Valentine is Mary Lynn’s first child with partner Matthew Rolph.
