Laila Ali: Curtis is My Constant Companion Through It All

Courtesy Laila Ali

When Laila Ali found herself belly deep in her pregnancy, celebrating the joys and working through the tough moments, she relied on her main squeeze through it all: her husband Curtis Conway. “I think the person that supported me the most, and was closest to me on a regular basis throughout my pregnancy, was my husband,” she tells Us Weekly. Not only her partner, but “my best friend,” the 31-year-old gushes that Curtis gladly “stepped up to the plate” when needed the most. However, according to Laila, she wasn’t expecting any less from her husband of almost two years!

“He’s the one that’s there morning to night, knows what I’m dealing with, what I’m going through, what my most private thoughts are … I knew he would — that’s why I married him!”

Now the proud mama of 10-month-old Curtis Muhammad, Laila is determined to maintain her fitness regimen, even with baby boy in tow! “What I used to do when I was pregnant and also after I had my son — he was only weeks old — I would go for walks,” she recalls. “You can do a whole lot with your child right at your side.” In fact, the threesome have made exercising a family affair, as the routine not only allows Laila to encourage a healthy style of living for her child, but also creates the perfect bonding experience for all.

“I think it’s important for people to spend time together as a family, for parents to spend time with their kids, to be a part of their lives and exercising. Getting out and doing something as a family is not only free, but it’s a great way to stay on top of what’s going on in each other’s lives, connect as a family … and just build relationships.”

Thrilled to finally be a mother, Laila admits her greatest joy comes bright and early each morning. “When I see those bright eyes, it just brings so much joy to my heart,” she says.

Molly Ringwald: Motherhood is in the Bones

David Livingston/Getty

Playing a mom of teenagers on the hit show The Secret Life of the American Teenager has offered Molly Ringwald insight into what lies ahead. A soon-to-be mom-of-three, the 41-year-old actress tells Movieweb “it’s kind of like looking into a crystal ball into the future.” The age difference might make things “interesting,” but Molly says that by being a real life mom she brings her maternal instincts to the role.

“I think that once you’re a mother, you understand; not to say that people who aren’t mothers can’t play mothers,” she explains. “I think I played mothers before I was actually a mother in my real life, but I think once you experience that, there are just certain things that you just know.”

“There are certain things that you feel comfortable with, a way of touching your child’s head or a way of like wiping dirt off their face. There’s just a way that you have, I think, that you don’t quite — It’s not in your bones, I think, until you actually are a mother.”

Molly feels the show offers a “pretty realistic” look at a modern day family. “I think so,” she says. “I mean I think that every family is different. I don’t think that there’s any definitive way to portray a family. I think that this is the way that this family functions, but I think obviously it’s different in other families.” Their portrayal of Molly’s current pregnancy was certainly realistic! Having her bump written into the show is what she says she preferred. “I did not want to go through a whole season of walking around with towels in front of me,” she explains. “So, that was something that was discussed and they just decided to go with it.”

“I also just thought that it was interesting considering the fact that my daughter was pregnant in the previous season, having her go through the whole thing again and having my grandchild be older than my new child is kind of funny too.”

Molly is mom to Mathilda Ereni, 5 ½, with husband Panio Gianopolous; The couple expect boy-girl twins in early August.

Sarah Shahi Switches Into Mom Mode

Courtesy BabyCouture for use on CBB

Pickles and ice cream have nothing on Sarah Shahi.

In the June-August issue of BabyCouture magazine the 29-year-old actress — expecting a son this summer — reveals her first trimester go-to meal: a baked potato with spinach, cheese, black beans and cottage cheese.

“We would try to go out to restaurants and ended up leaving because nothing sounds as good as my potato,” she recalls. “It was a mountain of a potato!”

Although husband Steve Howey thought she was “nuts,” he too became a fan once he tried her creation.

Cravings aside, Sarah’s hormones have been mostly in check. “I’m nowhere near what the stereotype is,” she says.

Every expectant mother has her moments, however! Sarah admits,

“The freezer drawer had come off its wheels and I couldn’t get it back on to shut the drawer. I worked on it for a half an hour! Steve comes home and I’m sitting on the kitchen floor, in front of the freezer, crying, saying ‘Why is this happening to me? Why?’ Ahh, pregnancy.”

Noting that a dad’s only real job during pregnancy is to “make sure the mother is happy,” Sarah says that Steve has been a trooper: “Basically, he’s had to come to terms with whatever I say during these 40 weeks, goes!”

As for her own parental instincts, Sarah says she felt like a mom “the moment the stick turned blue.”

“Something in you just switches. You definitely don’t come first anymore.”

Cardboard Country Cottage

Imagination Box Co. makes the the only cardboard toys we found that are printed inside and out. The cute Country Cottage ($24) has a fireplace, a cat and even a welcome mat. The roof lifts off easily without damaging the tabs so the child can reach right in to paint or play. It comes in only three pieces and it took about five minutes to put together, which is great when your child is jumping up and down shouting, “ARE YOU DONE YET, MAMA?” The Country Cottage comes with a set of watercolor paints, too. The Cottage is made from 45% post-consumer cardboard (The white paper layer is new but it makes it easier to see the painting) and is completely recyclable. It’s only about two feet tall and is perfect for Barbie and her pals. We like that all of their toys are made in the USA!

Soleil Moon Frye: Moms Do 'The Best That We Can'

Charley Gallay/WireImage

In the day-to-day effort to balance work and family, Soleil Moon Frye sets her expectations high – and forgives herself when those efforts fall short.

“We just do the best that we can as moms, as business owners, and when we fall down and we fail, we say, we’ll do it better next time,” she told CBB during Weleda‘s Thursday launch of The Little Seed‘s eco-friendly Private Label children’s clothing line.

“And then we get up and we do it better next time. Then we continue going on and being strong.”

“The hardest part is just finding the balance and making sure there’s always the aspect of family and that the family is always first, and that you have that balance.”

Fortunately, it sounds as though Soleil has an excellent ally in daughter Poet Sienna Rose, turning 4 next month, who is quite smitten with baby Jagger Joseph Blue, 15 ½-months.

“She’s the best big sister in the whole entire world,” Soleil, 32, raves. “She’s amazing. They’re so good together.”
