John Leguizamo Says Times Have Changed Since His Childhood

Michael Loccisano/Getty

Times have changed since actor John Leguizamo was a child. Once able to walk to school without a care in the world or hitch a ride on the subway when he was a young boy, the doting dad admits that the same doesn’t ring true for his own children. “I used to go every place by myself. You’d play on the street until the street lamps went on,” he tells PARADE.

“My kids are never allowed to go anywhere alone…There’s always somebody watching them. It’s a very different time.”

That said, while Allegra Sky, 10, and Ryder Lee, 9, may not have the same privileges once granted to their father, the two are happily reaping the benefits in other areas! A self-proclaimed “strict” dad — albeit “for the right reasons” — John’s household rules are not unlike many other parents in that swearing is unacceptable. However, in addition to prohibiting his kids from using foul language, the actor has taken it a bit further — swearing is off-limits for him as well! “If I say a bad word, I have to give them a quarter,” he explains. From the sound of things, both Allegra and Ryder have started quite the collection.

“With those quarters they’ve bought themselves a car. And now they’re working on a condo.”

In John’s new movie Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, his character Sid longs to be a father but yet does not fully understand the responsibilities that come along with the job. For John, his onscreen role mirrored his own journey into fatherhood. Never realizing “how difficult parenting was going to be,” he admits the task can at times become a bit overwhelming. “You’ve got to help your kids figure out their own purpose in life while you’re trying to figure out your purpose in life,” he says. “Where’s the manual? If I could find the right parenting manual, I would be reading it.”

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs is now in theaters. Allegra and Ryder are his children with wife Justine Maurer.

Summer Infant Tub Time Tea Party Set: One Lump Or Two?

Summer Infant’s Tub Time Tea Party Set ($10) comes with two cups, a tea pot with a lid and a cute sugar bowl with plastic sugar cubes trapped inside. My two boys love to pour tea and spill it all over each other. Push the sugar bowl under water and it makes lots of bubbles as it fills with water. The water dribbles out in a slow stream when they pretend to dole out the sugar. This tea set is a big hit at every bath.

Rachel Weisz Grateful for Anonymity in New York City

Freddy Baez/Ramey

Being a small fish in a big pond suits Rachel Weisz just fine. While the paparazzi are content to chase after her British compatriot Kate Winslet, the 39 -year-old actress says she’s been able to enjoy relative anonymity in New York City with partner Darren Aronofsky and their 3-year-old son Henry Chance. “I have never had a problem, except maybe briefly when I won the Oscar and gave birth to Henry in quick succession,” she tells the August issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK. “Then suddenly everyone was interested.”

Although “having those lenses coming up towards you when you’re holding this little bundle in your arms is frightening,” Rachel says that such instances were few and far between. “Sometimes the paparazzi, on the lookout for Tom Cruise, who lives nearby, trickle onto my street, take a few pictures of me and disappear,” she concedes. “But I never feel hounded.”

“I am really not on that level of fame. I go on the subway. I walk Henry to school.”

Rachel’s next film The Lovely Bones is slated for a December 2009 release.

Tim Meadows On Separating Fact From Fiction for Sons

Adriana M. Barraza/WENN

For Saturday Night Live alum Tim Meadows, some storylines hit closer to home than others. Currently starring in TBS’ The Bill Engvall Show, where he plays a divorcé, Tim says that he limits sons Isaiah and Julian‘s exposure to the sitcom as he is recently divorced from their mom Michelle Taylor.

“If it’s an episode that does not deal with me being divorced, then I’ll watch it with my kids,” he elaborates. “I explain it to them cause they’re six and eight years old, so they understand that it’s just pretend and everything.”

“But for me, it’s too personal to have to explain, ‘When that guy is talking about his ex-wife, I’m not talking about your mommy.’ I try to keep that aspect of it separated.”

The third season of The Bill Engvall Show premieres July 18th.

Mayim Bialik Named Celebrity Spokesperson by the Holistic Moms Network

Chris Weeks/WireImage

CBB readers already know that Mayim Bialik is committed to raising sons Miles, 3 ½, and Fred, 11 months, as holistically as possible, and now her dedication has been acknowledged by the Holistic Moms Network (HMN).  A nationwide non-profit resource organization, HMN seeks to connect parents who are interested in holistic health and green living.

Mayim — who has been a member of HMN for several years — will now serve as its celebrity spokesperson, a role she relishes. “For those of us who parent against current trends, and for those of us who are parenting after educated, compassionate decisions, to do so without support can be disheartening, discouraging, and often leads to straying from our instincts,” she notes. “HMN provides the support and education that we historically have gotten from close-knit communities.” She adds,

“In HMN, I really found my people and it helped me gain confidence so that I did not feel defensive or ashamed to share my parenting choices when asked.”

The organization has more than 120 chapters throughout the United States, and advocates seven fundamental ideas for holistic parenting, including living simply and consuming less, making informed and educated parenting decisions, teaching children to respect and care about the natural world and limiting their exposure to advertising, marketing and a consumer-driven culture.

Each chapter meets at least once per month, where members connect and learn from one another; HMN members are also privy to email discussion groups and an e-newsletter. For more information on HMN or to learn how to join, click here.
