Caught Caring: Usher and Camp New Look

Celebrity Baby Blog – Caught Caring

An entrepreneurial spirit led R&B singer Usher to branch out into the world of fragrance, and to later become part owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers. It is his philanthropic spirit, however, which has led the 30-year-old father of two to share all that he has learned with others.

On Monday, Usher welcomed 130 children to Camp New Look — a free two-week program in Atlanta where participants learn about the corporate side of sports and entertainment. “They say in life you can be a product of your experience or a product of your environment,” he tells USA Today. “I choose to be a product of my experience.”

Many children have dreams of making it big as an athlete or an artist but precious few will ever make that dream a reality. At Camp New Look, campers learn that there are other ways to achieve success. Last summer they worked with industry experts to develop a comprehensive marketing campaign for a mock fragrance  — tackling tasks like pitch meetings, contract negotiations and promotion strategies along the way. “There are so many other talents that kids have,” Usher notes.

“These kids come here and they’re like ‘Oh, wow … we’re going to learn about entertainment!’ But they leave engaged in life and knowing that, ‘I can have a future outside of music.’ That’s what makes me most proud.”

Julie Delpy: 'I Love Everything' About Motherhood

Fame

The best parenting advice Julie Delpy has gotten since having her son Leo six months ago came from her father.

“He’s like, ‘Don’t protect him too much. Get him a little dirty. Leave him in the yard a little bit,’” the actress tells PEOPLE. “He’s a French dad, you know what I mean? He’s like, ‘Get them a little dirty so they protect themselves from germs.’”

Julie, who turns 40 in December, may try to heed her father’s laid-back advice, but one of her favorite activities with Leo – her first child (whose father is her boyfriend, German composer Marc Streitenfeld) – is bath time.

“I love Weleda bath soap,” says the French star of Before Sunrise and 2 Days in Paris. “It makes him smell like … a little baby.”

The actress-screenwriter-director spent her first night (ever!) away from Leo dining on filet mignon, broccolini and string beans and mingling with other Hollywood powerhouses at the Buzz Girls Creatives Dinner, a private fete for women in the entertainment industry held at BOA Steakhouse in West Hollywood on July 14th.

“I love everything about it,” she says of motherhood. “I love breastfeeding. I love looking [down] at him. He looks like a little koala bear. It’s so cute.”

And Julie’s favorite baby gadget? A video baby monitor mounted on Leo’s bed.

“I can just open my eyes and see his little face,” she says. “I love watching him. I’m such a ‘paranoid, worried-about-my-baby’ person that it’s perfect for me.”

Julie, who is diving back into screenwriting and developing several projects after taking some time off post-birth, says she and Marc got Leo used to sleeping in his own room at about 4 ½ months old. “But I love to be able to see him all the time,” she says. “Otherwise, I miss him.”

California Baby Bug Blend Collection: Send the Skeeters Scurrying!

Even though it’s the most effective at deterring mosquitoes and other nasty bugs, I’m adamant about not using bug repellent products that contain DEET (it’s been shown to cause neurological damage when absorbed int the bloodstream which it obviously is when applied to the skin). With that in mind, I checked out California Baby’s new Bug Blend Collection which uses natural repellents like lemon eucalyptus, citronella, cedarwood atlas and lemongrass to send the skeeters scurrying!
