Aoki Simmons' Red Carpet Moment

Johnny Nunez courtesy Rush Philanthropic

For Kimora Lee and Russell Simmons‘ daughter Aoki, the A-list apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

At an event held at her father’s East Hampton home on July 18, Aoki, 6 ½, and her sister Ming, 9 ½, worked the red carpet, posing for photographers.

But when a friend of Aoki threw a lollipop her way, the celeb-in-training caught it, shot the little boy a fierce look and said, “Don’t throw something at me when I am on the red carpet.”

And with a toss of her hair, she faced photographers again with a big smile.

But a moment later — channeling her famous mother — she turned back to her friend and said, “but thanks, I love it!”

In addition to doing her mom proud at the event (the Art For Life tenth anniversary party, which raised $1 million for Rush Philanthropic) Aoki got to rub elbows with Cheetah Girl Adrienne Bailon.

And while she may act like a diva on the red carpet, Aoki and her sister are far from jaded: Both were thrilled to meet the teen star.

Keith Urban Schedules Tour Around Family Time

Fame

Life on the road can be hard for musicians, but even more so when they have little ones at home. As dad to daughter Sunday Rose, 1, country star Keith Urban tackled the unique task of planning his Escape Together tour around his family. By only being out on the road for “three or four days at a time,” Keith is able to spend ample time with his baby girl and wife, actress Nicole Kidman. Although it meant expanding the tour to seven months long to “allow for that sort of schedule,” the 41-year-old says that it’s been worth it.

“There’s a certain balance that I’ve got to have in my life,” Keith explains. “My family is extremely important to me. Playing live is important to me too. So how do I balance the two? We structured the tour so I fly to the first date, then bus it to the next couple shows.”

The audience gets a better show as well, he notes, because the band doesn’t get burned out. “We’re not just going through the motions. Come the first show of each week, I’m chomping at the bit to play. Then we’re home for three or four days. There’s never a show when it’s like the 14th show in a row without being home.”

After battling alcoholism with a trip to rehab shortly after his marriage to Nicole, Keith says his current album Defying Gravity reflects his new outlook — and the joy fatherhood has brought him.

“I think all of these things — marriage, sobriety, fatherhood certainly — in the last couple of years, those have been wonderful turns in my life. They’ve just been wonderful.”

Sandra Bullock Prefers the Company of Kids to Actors

Steve Granitz/WireImage

With a film career that took off in the 90s, Sandra Bullock has found herself rubbing elbows with some of Hollywood’s hottest stars over the years. However, when she became a stepmother to three kids after marrying Jesse James, it didn’t take long for her to realize she prefers the company of children to actors! “Was I terrified? Not at all,” she asks of becoming a mother.

“Actors are the biggest babies on the planet, and I would rather be in a kindergarten than a room full of actors.”

A self-proclaimed “evil stepmonster” to Chandler, 15, Jesse Jr., 12, and Sunny, 5, Sandra has happily stepped up to the plate in raising the brood. Fortunately, her place in the family has been an easy transition for all, she shares, due mostly to her relationship with the childrens’ mothers. “I presented myself to Jesse’s first ex-wife as a human being first and foremost,” she tells the Daily Mail. “I didn’t meet the children until I became a trusted person in the eyes of a woman I respected — that was important.”

Unwavering in her stance that biological children may simply not be a part of her plan, the actress reveals that while she may have once contemplated adoption as a single woman, the path she has chosen has been equally — if not more — rewarding. “I met Jesse and it all fell into place. Suddenly the answer presented itself in a much better package than I’d ever planned,” she explains.

That said, the 44-year-old does not pretend to have all the answers, particularly when it comes to disciplining the children. “The hard thing is not to laugh when you’re disciplining them — and if you do the same thing they did, then you have to stand in the corner too so they know it’s fair,” she says.

“Seriously, try it for five minutes. It’s claustrophobic — you can’t watch TV, can’t make any phone calls — the most boring thing ever.”

Caught Caring: Tobey Maguire and the Child Nutrition Act

Celebrity Baby Blog – Caught Caring

With childhood obesity rates continuing to soar, parents are taking a good, hard look at the foods their children are being offered during the school day. Although Tobey Maguire‘s two children — Ruby Sweetheart, 2 ½, and Otis Tobias, 11-weeks — aren’t yet school-aged, he’s also taken that look, and is expressing a concern about what he sees.

In a letter sent this week to U.S. Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and U.S. Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa), Tobey urged lawmakers to reexamine the standards set by the Child Nutrition Act (CNA). The legislation — initially passed in 1966 –  is poised for Congressional re-authorization this fall, presenting a “golden opportunity” for change according to the 34-year-old Spider Man star.

More fruits, vegetables and low-fat vegetarian meals are needed, Tobey writes, noting that “school is tough enough already — students shouldn’t have to put up with lunches swimming in fat and cholesterol.”

Tobey goes on to cite a recent article by the Chicago Tribune, which revealed that Chicago public schools serve beef nachos everyday because the federal government’s commodity foods program “dumps surplus beef on schools across the country.”

Not only would a vegetarian meal be more healthy, it might actually cost less than a higher-fat alternative, according to Tobey.

“Being overweight can be a miserable experience for children. It affects their grades and sets them up to be unhealthy adults.”

Urban school districts stand the most to lose for students in low income families are at a greater risk for hunger, qualifying them for the National School Lunch Program which feeds 30 million children each day.

It is particularly worrisome, then, that these same children are facing skyrocketing rates of obesity and related diseases like Type 2 diabetes according to medical experts.

Even if you live in an affluent district, however, you can still feel the effects. Tobey writes,

“Higher rates of obesity, heart disease and diabetes mean greater healthcare costs for everyone. Healthy foods can help prevent those problems, so federal dollars spent on better school meals are a smart investment.”

Ruby and Otis are Tobey’s children with wife Jennifer Meyer Maguire. To contact your legislators about this issue, click here.
