It’s a surprise doubles team! Roger and Mirka Vavrinec Federer are the proud parents of twin girls, the tennis star announced early Friday morning on his website.

Daughters Charlene Riva Federer and Myla Rose Federer arrived late Thursday evening, July 23rd in Switzerland, Roger, 27, shares.

“This is the greatest day of our lives,” the Grand Slam champ and No. 1 player in the world said in a statement. “Mirka, Myla and Charlene are all healthy and doing very well.”

The couple announced the pregnancy in March, but never let on that they were expecting twins.

Well i’ll be damned! HAHA Did they pull one over on all of us…I totally was not expecting that at all! I like the names and I bet they are gorgeous girls! Congrats to Roger and Mirka and welcome to the world Charlene and Myla!!

Thrifty Sisters Coupon Clipping Service on

Wow, this is a surprise!! I had no idea they were expecting twins. That is so exciting!! Congratulations to them. :)

April on

OMG!!!! How funny! They told the Swiss press that they were having a boy! Well good for them for being able to keep a secret. Congrats and I really love the names Riva and Rose.

JC on

Didn’t they say they were having a boy? Or am I thinking of someone else? Is this a surprise to them too?

jessica on

haha good on them keeping their privacy!! like the names, Myla Rose in particular!

jessica on

p.s. Serena and Venus better watch out!!

Erin on

Okay, my husband and I had a few glasses of wine after dinner, but did I just read that Roger and Mirka had twin girls?! Wow! So happy for them – and so impressed they kept the sex of and number of kids under wraps! (They did do that, right? Or is that the Pinot Noir clouding my judgement?!)

Lauren on

What the heck!!!!!! They Punked all of us!!! I thought they were having ONE and numerous reports said it was a boy! Wow.. Congrats to them :D

Tanisha on

Congrats to them but I thought they were having a boy!

April on

JC you’re right, I think they just had a little fun with the press. This is hilarious!!

lennie on

oh my god!!! He even has us Swiss people fooled :) such great news. I am so happy for them! I wish them all the best with the two cuties. Can’t wait to see them.

Lila on

Hahaha, that’s such a surprise! Congrats to them! :) I really like the names, they did an excellent job.. ;)

pam on

love the names! congrats and hope all are healthy

Jenna on

I saw a picture of Mirka awhile ago, and I thought to myself that she looked too big for a singleton. I didn’t think anything of it. So this news doesn’t really surprise me. Congrats to the family!

AM on

Wonderful news!! Congratulations!
Welcome to baby Charlene Riva and Myla Rose !
Born on my own birthday :)

Penny on

Congratulations to you all! So the ‘Victory’ signs that Roger was sending at Wimbledon was infact that it was ‘two babies’! Well done Roger! Fantastic news! Health & Happiness to you all! Overjoyed!

Traut Siegwart on

Well, yes it is a big surprise. As far as I know, Roger
never said it would be a boy – but didn’t object when a
journalist referred to a boy. And the whole world assumed….

Sam & Freya's Mum on

Wow, what a surprise, sneaky, good on them, it’s their personal business anyway. Not sure about charlene, but love Myla Rose, pretty! Congrats to the new parents.

Jennifer on

I wasn’t expecting that announcement at all! Congratulations to Roger and Mirka on the arrival of their twin girls!!! =)

vixen on

Ha ha! Brilliant. This explains why at Wimbledon he kept referring in interviews to his ‘child’, with an odd hesitation. I thought it was a strange expression given his usual fluency in English, but perhaps it was just a good way of not letting it slip that there were two in there!

Really pleased for them all.

Sanja on

This is the biggest surprise I’ve had with celebrity pregnancies!

I love both of them and LOVE the joke on the press:-)

It’s great when birth details are a surprise like this. I hate it when celebrities announce the sex, name and sometimes even the birth date when they’re like 6 months pregnant.

black pearl on

great news

Helena on

I thought they were having a boy as well. Well done them for keeping that one quiet! They seem like really nice, low key people and I think they’ll be great parents.

Alice on

haha! When I read the headline I was like ‘oh their baby is born… wait, WHAT?’ Good for them for keeping it all private until the girls arrived! And congratulations on the new babies!

Sandra on

Awesome… Love the fact that they tricked all of us – I’m not sure he ever said they were having a boy. :)

Like the names – congrats to Roger and Mirka on the twins… I’m sure they’re gorgeous. :)

Chloe on

What a nice surprise! Congrats to Roger and Mirka on the births of their daughters, we’ll probably see them competing in the Wimbledon final in 18 years! :)

kai on

Ha, that’s great! congrats!

just a question, are those names common in Switzerland? I’m from Germany and I expected something a little more German-sounding. Then again, I’m not an international superstar;)

Tamil mani on

This is great!!!i wish they live happily forever!!

Lara on

Great! What a nice surprise :)

ellen on

How fabulous!

Well done to them for keeping their twins a surprise. Genius.

Sadie on

What a gorgeous surprise! I’m a proud mom of twin girls myself, and am so happy and excited for them.
Poor Mirka must have been soooo uncomfortable at Wimbledon, bless her cotton socks. Twin pregnancies are so tough. I also thought she looked massive, but didn’t twig there might be more than one bun in the oven.

Shannon on

I don’t know that he ever actually confirmed that they were expecting a boy, but that’s definitely what I thought from the press reports! This is awesome news. I love both names, and I love that a celebrity actually managed to have a baby with no one knowing what it was!

Paige on

Wow.

Still great news. Beautiful names for two beautiful little girls, who I’m sure will be little Daddy’s girls.

Elly on

I can’t believe it! I follow him on Facebook and thought his announcement this morning was a joke! Good for them, what a fun surprise! Roger is so sweet on Mirka, and these little girls are going to be absolutely adored. The names are cute, but I agree that they don’t seem very German to me. Can’t wait to see pictures.

Andrea on

Congrats to them…and double congrats for keeping it such a HUGE secret!!!

Harley on

Hahahahahahaha! Holy freakin’ moses! I so did not see that one coming!

Dounia on

Awwww twin girls, how sweet is that! I always dreamed of having twin girls, but there is no record of twins in my family, so I think it’ll be very unlikely…

eternalcanadian on

LOL. Twins? Girls? All along it was a boy, “Now that the tournament is over Roger will return to his native Switzerland where wife Mirka Vavrinec Federer will deliver their first child — a boy — in early August.” (http://celebrity-babies.com/2009/07/14/roger-federer-saving-himself-for-diaper-duty/)

Congratulations to Roger and Mirka! :-)

jessie on

congrats to them!

Shannon on

Congratulations! I love this couple so much!

Forever Moore on

I kinda thought she was carrying a little big…now I know why!

Lara on

Elly, why should the names sound German…..?

Ariel on

Wonderful news. Many congratulations to the happy family. When I saw here at Wimbledon, I wondered if she was expecting twins. I am glad they are all doing well and healthy.

Helen on

Who bets these girls are going to win their first Grand Slam double title by 2030?

Sarah on

Didn’t he say they were expecting a boy? haha

Congrats on the birth of their little girls then!

The names are not what you would expect from Swiss/Slovak parents. They sound very english/american…

N on

No wonder she looked so miserable! I am now in complete and utter shock that she sat through that entire match with TWO babies in there! Congrats! I love the names!

Ash on

Hahahaha…they fooled us all. I thought that they were having a boy.I did not see that one coming…..

Daisy on

OMG wow…they sure fooled everyone…I thought they said they were having a little boy…!? Maybe im wrong, but wow thats so fun…congrats!!!!!

Mimi on

I remember a few months ago a lot of posters were commenting on how fat Mirka looked in a photo. Well shame on them. It would have been rude if she were having just one, but she was actually carrying twins so it was not only rude, but stupid.

I applaud Roger and Mirka’s indifference to what the media or the public “deserves” to know about their personal life.

Emma on

I was confused when i read she had twins becuase i didny know she was expecting two
What a lovely suprise though

Ana on

congrats to them!!

I also thought they said they were having a boy? im sure i read it somewhere!

Jaedyn on

He said it was a boy, not two girls ;) I think it’s quite funny that he didn’t say the truth :D

I LOVE the name Myla, and also like that they share the R-theme on the middle names (Riva and Rose are beautiful, and I think they even match with Roger). Congrats to them! It’s my dream to have girl/girl twins one day!

cat on

I could have sworn they were expecting a boy, but I´m so happy they are twin girls, how sweet!

Ariel on

They are lovely names and perhaps have special meaning to them. People can name their children whatever they wish, not necessarily reflecting their ethnicity. I know people who gave their child a Danish name even though neither parent was Danish. They just liked the name.

Anon on

Love the names..especially Myla! Sounds so pretty!

Mrs. R. on

That’s AWESOME! What a great secret to get to surprise everyone with! Congrats to the whole family! What a great year he’s having!

Lola Marie on

Yay for them. Now that is how you fool the world. Don’t hide it and deny it…put your own spin to :-)

Now that we know she was pregnant with twins I think she looked great!

Flor de Maria on

Roger and Mirka, God bless your new family, the kids are the biggest life´s gift!!!! I love thier names, Myla is the name of my daughter too…You´ve a fanatic family in Guatemala!!!!! Congratulations…

Brooklyn on

I’m so surprised that they had twins! Anyways, I love their names! Especially Charlene’s middle name Riva.

brannon on

Very smart approach as everyone is now focused on the gender and doubles. And not the names! SJP should have tried this! -

Olivia on

I adore Roger Federer…he and Mirka make such a great couple, and now they’ll be amazing parents. As a mommy of twin girls myself, welcome to the club!

I like how everyone just assumed that they were having a boy, and the notoriously private Roger seemed to play it up, never confirming but never denying. Heck, Mirka even wore navy blue to Wimbledon! Great surprise. I know they probably won’t share too many details or pictures to begin, but I’d bet the girls were good sizes since I believe her due date was very early August (and thus she almost made it full-term with two!). Here’s to hoping they’re healthy little girls, and many blessings to the new Federer family!

alexandra on

aww i love the names! ugh it’s horrible to hear that people had been commenting on how big she was when she was still pregnant (even though it turned out she was carrying twins).

again, why would the names be german? I thought rog and mirka were both swiss?… anyway, so many people are saying that they love the name myla (which i do too), but I also think that charlene is really beautiful too.

also, does anyone know if it’s myla like lyla, or myla like me-la?
I don’t know anyone with that name

Ann on

My friend named Myla is says her name like My La.

Crystal on

I was SHOCKED when I saw this on AOL!!! Then I come to CBB and it’s confirmed!!! CONGRATULATIONS to Roger and Mirka!! Here’s to many blessings and enjoying your BEAUTIFUL BABY GIRLS!!! Twins!! WOW!!! :)

kai on

alexandra, they speak (mostly) German/Swiss German in Switzerland. I like the names, I was just surprised.

Lisa on

I just saw this on US Magazine and came straight here to confirm and here it is!!! I have to say this is the biggest surprise of a celebrity birth that I have seen. Usually, when a celebrity are having twins, they may not say the sex but they do say if it’s twins but not Roger!! Good for them!!! I am happy for them.

Roger never said it was a boy (or at least I don’t think he did) sometimes, I would read it’s a boy and other reports, they would not mention the sex and so I thought to myself, just wait until they have the baby but this is a surprise!! Congrats to the whole family.

Sarah M. on

Surprise, surprise! Good for them for keeping it a secret. Congrats to the family, and I’m glad everyone is healthy!

FC on

Twins? Two more additions to the twins bonanza! And their names are pretty. I’ve seen Charlene before and like it, but Myla I’ve only seen maybe once or twice, if at all. It’s a cute name. :D

Congrats to Roger and his wife Mirka on their twins!

Margherita on

So excited for the Federer family .. Roger not only a star on court and whereever he appears but an inspiration to all Jnr. players.what lucky lettle girls to have such wonderful parents Congrats. Congrats. from Sydney Australia

Ivey on

Ah now Rog is going to have to buy two more planes :-)

Sam & Freya's Mum on

Ariel: we’re the same, gave our daughter (Freya) a Scandinavian name when neither of us are Scandi of any kind, just liked the name, both of us, as not hugely – and fortunately we were both blonde haired as young kids and myself I have blue eyes and so do both our kids, so the Danish or Norwegian name daughter has a few people have also commented, suits her due to being fair, just lucky it worked out that she was also fair!(can’t remember exactly which, but in that part of the world, lol). Like Myla Rose, not sure about Charlene – reminds me of the character Kylie Minogue played on Aussie soap Neighbours, being finding fame singing…

taha on

many many congratulations to roger and mirka on this heartiest occasion
love and best wishes from pakistan

Mia on

I just read this, this is such a surprise! All of the reports said it was a boy. I think it might’ve been less a surprise if they had a boy/girl twins, but two girls!! Who saw that one coming? Congrats to them! More twins, its crazy.

CelebBabyLover on

Wow! I totally didn’t see that one coming! In fact, I had to read the post a few times before I finally got what the announcement was saying!

Anyway, I hope for Mirka’s sake that she was able to deliver the twins vaginally. Caring for newborn twins is hard enough (I don’t have twins myself, but I’ve heard plenty of stories from people that do!) without having to recover from major abdominal surgery at the same time (I realize that recovering from a vaginal birth isn’t all sunshine and roses either, but at least, from what I’ve heard, it’s usually easier than recovering from a C-section!)!

Also, does anyone know how old Mirka is (I’m asking because I know that women over 35 have an increased chance of concieving twins naturally). That said, I’m hoping these are identical cuties (since there seem to be so few identical twins in Hollywoood these days. In fact, the only set I can think of is D’Lila and Jesse Combs!), which would make my question of how old Mirka is moot (since identical twins happen by pure chance. It’s possible that a fertility procedure called ICSI-in which a sperm is injected directly into an egg- can increase the chances of the egg splitting, but I think the jury’s still out on that one.)! :)

Oh, and I love the names! :)

Corrie on

Oh, that’s sneaky! All the reports had said that the baby was supposed to be a boy, so twin girls…that’s awesome. Way to play with the media, Roger & Mirka! I like the way you do business. Congratulations on your new arrivals!

Sarah M. on

CelebBabyLover – I know Niki Taylor’s twin boys are identical and Dan Spitz (former guitarist for Anthrax) has mirror-image identical twins born on May 29, 2007. I think Lance Armstrong’s twin girls are and Michael J. Fox’s twin girls are, also. Other than that, I haven’t heard of other identical twins born to celebs. :)

Candice on

Congratulations Roger and Mirka!! Wonderful news.. Wish you all the love and happiness with your 2 girls. God Bless.

christina on

CelebBabyLover –I realise how incredibly unreliable Wikipedia can be at the best of times, but according to their webpage, Mirka is only in her early 30′s, apparently born in 1978

Sadie on

Celebbabylover – I had twins via C-section and the whole experience was great. Recovery was quick. If Mirka is anything like me, she won’t give two monkeys about how the twins arrived. By the second day I was back on my feet taking care of my gorgeous twin girls.
I understand your concern – I felt the same way prior to having a C-section – but since having two, I have realised they are no big deal.

Sarah M. on

I think everyone is different as far as deliveries in general are concerned. I’ve heard of women who have had wonderful experiences-healed fast and little to no pain-with c-sections. I’ve also heard stories of women who have had the worst experiences-took forever to heal with a great deal of pain-with c-sections. I think the same goes for vaginal with an epidural and all natural. Everyone woman is different and reacts differently to the same things.

Sanja on

CelebBabyLover -Mirka is 31, so I doubt they did fertility treatments (+ this seemed like a surprise pregnancy. If they were planing a baby they would have gotten married before and not a few months after they found out, imo).

CelebBabyLover on

Sanja- I wasn’t trying to imply that they did fertitly treatments. In fact, I was trying to imply that, if Mirka was over 35, it’s even more likely that she concieved them naturally, as women over 35 have an increased chance of having fraternal twins naturally. :)

Sarah M.- I think you hit the nail on the head about recovery from childbirth! :)

Aileen, Edinburgh on

Congratlations to Roger and Mirka and in partcular for keeping their private life secret, even if it meant female fans busily counting on their fingers! I predict Roger will win the US Open and more Grand Slams – any player who can win the French Open and Wimbledon with the birth of their first child so near, has to have enormous mental strength.

swetha on

congrats to roger and mirka. All the best for your personal life also.

Me on

Good on them for keeping it quiet! and congratulations, i’m really happy for them!! xx

Helen Oon on

Congrats. joyous good news. Very impressed with their taking their privacy so seriously. So unlike the present breed of celebrities.

Tiger Lily on

Does anyone know if Myla’s name is pronounced MY-la or Mee-la? I’ve never heard that name before, so I’m not sure how to say it correctly.

Rebecca on

Charlene isn’t a very exotic name lol but at least it is fairly normal name.
