Celebrity Baby Blog – Poll

Most new moms-to-be are excited to start acquiring gear and clothing for their new baby and create a baby registry, but with the current economy, many are taking advantage of the classic art of the hand-me-down. For others, only new will do. Whether you plan to use hand-me-downs or buy used gear, what items do you plan to buy (or ask for as a gift) new, no matter what? In the comments section, please tell us why!

I always tell people to go cheap/used on everything but safety. Car seats hold our most prized possessions and should not be skimped on. All it takes is a simple fall to the pavement to make a hairline fracture in the plastic which would cause the seat to fail in a crash. You don’t know the history of a used car seat so please buy new!

there should be an option of “nothing” for those of us who choose to reuse.

I think it depends…you just have to be cautious when re-using. My aunt wanted to give me my old crib, which after serving myself and my 2 siblings, her 2 kids used. However, safety regulations have changed a lot since then. While it’d be nice to not shell out a couple hundred for a new crib, I’m not willing to compromise on safety.

We do use Freecycle (which you can find off Yahoo.com). I really recommend it. Many of my son’s clothes and toys are used. My breast pump is too; I just bought some of the pieces new.

unless I have one from my older child that is still good to use and not expired, I would always buy the carseat new.

the crib can be bought used as long as it’s not too old, a stroller can also be gotten used… and clothes you might as well get used as they are outgrown so quickly

Bottles and pacifiers can be sterilized, though since pacifiers don’t last forever, I tend to just buy new of those… and even with bottles, I’d buy new nipples.

But the one thing that I would never buy used or use past the date is the carseat… it is definitely a piece of gear that is responsible for keeping your baby safe and alive in a very dangerous circumstance.

I think it depends on the articles and where they come from -if reusing. Clothing is one item I never mind reusing. First because it’s cheaper that way and second because kids grow so fast that they never get to use it for very long, so it’s safe to pass around a few times.

There’s no option for all of the above.

I’d say a car seat unless you know its history for sure. And as someone allready said, nipples and pacifiers usually wear out before you can take over them anyway. Cots are fine as long as they are sturdy, you can’t get a soda can through the slats and you can find a mattress that fits snugly (maximum 2 fingers between the bed frame and the mattress).
