Cabana Life: Sun-Protective Clothing and Accessories

“Did you know the average cotton t-shirt has an SPF equivalent of 5?”  That message greeted me on the website of Cabana Life when I logged on to figure out if I really needed to be one of those moms who outfitted their child in a swimsuits that looked more 1929 than 2009. An SPF of 5 seems pretty ridiculous for something they are wearing every day in the strong summer sun… and no, I hadn’t known that.

Cabana Life was founded by a woman and mother who, diagnosed with skin cancer at age 26, decided to do something about the options available to stylish moms and children looking to be safe in the summer.  The clothing is more expensive than the average children’s bathing suits, but the product you are getting far exceeds that.

Happy First Birthday, Honor Marie Warren!

London Ent/Splash News Online

It’s hard to believe time has flown so fast — Honor Marie Warren turns one year old today! Ever since parents Jessica Alba and Cash Warren surprised us with a pregnancy announcement in Dec. 2007, keeping up with this growing family has become a favorite pastime of CBB readers.

After her arrival on June 7th, 2008, Honor — quite the serious sweetie, as many have pointed out — has often been seen wheeling around in her Orbit stroller or perched on mom’s hip, occasionally cracking a smile, much to our delight!

So what’s the plan for Honor’s first birthday? “I’m going to bake a cake that she can eat and put all over her face!” Jessica says. The party may have to wait though — mom is in the middle of filming The Killer Inside Me. “I was thinking about having it after her birthday,” explains Jessica. “Just a little brunch with her friends from music class.”

Happy First Birthday Honor Marie! Check out our gallery of her first year, then come back and leave your comments!

Edie Falco: Realization of Motherhood Was 'Huge'

Neilson Barnard/Getty

When actress Edie Falco was cast on The Sopranos, the show led to the fulfillment of career goals, but it wasn’t until she become mother to Anderson, 4 ½, and Macy, 16 months, that her life’s ambition came true. Looking to adoption after deciding to pursue motherhood, Edie welcomed Anderson as an infant. It was an emotionally difficult experience, Edie admits.

“You can’t believe you’re being left alone with this infant. ‘Don’t they know I don’t know what I’m doing?’ Losing sleep. Up to that point it had been all about me, ‘Oh, I’ll get another massage.’ And all of a sudden there’s this screaming thing in your house and that’s what your whole life is. That was huge,” explains Edie. Motherhood “made me realize that I can show up for the responsibility.”

“In the beginning I thought, ‘I don’t know what the hell I’ve done. And there’s no way I can follow through on this.’ Meanwhile I got up every morning and I changed his diaper and I fed him his bottle, took him to his doctor’s appointments. I did all the stuff day-by-day gritting my teeth, I guess thinking this is what you do until it turns into a life that grows roots in the ground and becomes this whole living thing.”

A year into raising Anderson, Edie “realized he needs a sibling and I want another kid. I started the process again. And you start with the diapers and formula and you’re back at it again,” she laughs. Motherhood has brought Edie everything she felt she needed and it’s an experience that she describes simply as “huge.”

“The first time realizing I’m actually a mother is just huge. Even when I say it now all these years later it still comes over me like a wave. Huge!”

Edie, 45, can next be seen in Showtime’s Nurse Jackie, premiering Monday night at 10:30 p.m.

SodaStream Jet Stream: DIY Seltzer and Soda

I have a weakness. Soda. Seltzer. Bubbled beverages that can’t be gotten from a tap, and therefore have to be purchased. So, I am guilty of indulging in plastic bottles that a) cost money, and b) though they can be recycled, it would be better if I didn’t have them at all, and c) the schlepping is a drawback in and of itself — the sheer annoyance of knowing that it’s on my list that week and I’m going to have to lug it all home.

All three weigh on my mind when I am purchasing bottled beverages, especially when my alter ego just snidely reminds me that there is an alternative that, though it doesn’t have bubbles or taste, comes right from the tap and avoids all of these pitfalls.

Enter SodaStream ($90+) — a sleek and powerful counter top device that carbonates chilled tap water into seltzer right in my kitchen, and also provides me with a variety — over 60 choices — of flavors to add, recreating almost all soda varieties available in any supermarket — caloric, diet, and flavor essence.
